TGYF!!! I am so beat this week, and the kids, well, if they could manage to try to pull something off on the bus, they were trying it.

Hawkeye, I use 1 TBLSof the Corid to 1 gal on water. That's what I have always used. I went out and checked all my birds, and found 1 with a wet bottem, so I went ahead and treated all birds. Most are all on auto-waterers, so treatment is quick and easy. After the corid runs thru, I am going to go ahead, and run wazine thru the waterers, and get that out of the way, and then, i'm going to go over everyone and look for signs of mites. Didn't see any a couple of monthe ago, but time to check again. I sure wish you could have come to Pryor, several big breeders will be there.
The builders worked all day puting up trim, and the last of the sky light material down the sides. Then they put up the red tin on the east side of the barn at the top. So hopefully, they will start on the roof monday

Just seems like it is taking forever, but with all the extra doors, window, and trim its taking longer than I want
Going to get my NPIP testing out of the way either next week, or the following week they have to get more antigen to test all my birds, glad I sold some. Well guess I better go gather eggs, and do what little I need to do for the evening, and get back in the house, its just seems really chilly to me, and don't want to be out in it.

This is Day 2 for the Corid. Everyone seems to be looking great. So that must have been it! There's no way a bird as sick as she was would recover that fast all on her own. Who does your NPIP testing?? I'm going to need that done this year! There is supposed to be a vet in Rose Hill that is getting his license to be a NPIP tester and I'm going to call him back again and see if he completed it. And if not, I might as well do it myself and become a tester for down here. Looks like there is a need. Your barn is going to be done in no time at all!! YAY!

I'm so very sorry about last night. I can't believe you didn't have anyone! All of that effort and people didn't even bother to tell you they wouldn't be there? Yucks. My DD was not the favorite person in the household last night. I made them ease up on her but good grief. I know that if all kids stay well, you'll have 8 next time. Even my oldest son wants to come and learn. That's pretty cool. Anybody sick or homework or project challenged gets left at home next time. That's just awful

I loved the Silkie pics. I'm going to show it to the kids but I already know what will happen when I do. "Can I have one?" repeated 8 times. Oh dear. I'm glad your girl has perked up. That's scary when they get sick. I don't know why, but I can't see your pics?

lizzy, I had 2 labs until they passed from old age. I love labbies but that is really worrisome. Hope it all works out.

I did get a couple of other families that said they can come on the next meeting. So I hope they show!! Did you not see the silkie pictures I posted?? I wonder what happened to them? Well, I think I posted them on my Facebook page, so you can see them there!

Hawkeye, I hope your hen gets better quick, that's so hard worrying about them when they get sick. I had one of my SFH pullets look like she had a goopy eye the other day & I thought well I should treat that, but the next day I went out & it looked OK. So maybe she just got something in her eye, who knows.

It seems now I have to go out & stand in the pen where the SFH & Cream Legbars are so the poor hens can get some food. When I take the FF out there & put it in their feeder the 4 roosters in there hog it & then jump on the poor hens if they try to get down off the roost to eat. I just stood between the roosters & the hens tonight so the poor things could eat without getting jumped. I will be so glad when I can get these birds moved to their new home. My little Ginger, the SFH pullet I got from Eileen just doesn't seem scared of the roosters at all, I guess she was used to the rowdy roosters in the main coop & these don't seem to bother her now. She's such a sweet little bird I just had to put her in the pen to keep her safe, I would be really upset if something happened to her.

Well it was cloudy & chilly today, but I got out this afternoon & brought all my gate materials in the garage & cut the supports & put them all together, at least the frame part. They look awfully wide, so I told my DH that I think we need to put the posts in & get the panels up before I do any more on the gates so if I have to cut them down a little in width I can do that before I put all of that fence on. I would hate to do all that & then find out the gates are too wide. At least it wouldn't be that hard to cut them down in width if I have to, just take a few screws out & cut the two inside boards. I hope it's not too nasty next week so we can get it all put up.

Josie, I hope you feel better soon, that's miserable to be sick & pregnant.

Poor hens!! I'm chomping at the bit like you are to get everyone all separated out into breeding pens! You're waaaay ahead of me! I don't think I'll get my DH to do anything until he finds something here. So I guess I have another month before I can convince him to work on my new pens! Ah well. I do have the kennels in the garage to do my pairs with, but I was really wanting everyone outside and not in the garage anymore. I was going to use those kennels as quarantine quarters and a hospital as needed. When you get those gates up-- post pics!! I'm dying of curiosity here!!! I bet your pens are going to look great!!

Checoukan according to google Elk city is about 130 miles. Not a fast trip for sure. What ya thinkin'? Of course it would help if I had a car to drive too!! I've got to find some time to get serious about a vehicle. I don't like being "stuck." Wow! To me it seems like your barn is going really fast. I just keep dreaming it is mine!!!
We were going to go shopping for some building materials today but DH went to town to take care of some things and I got busy feeding and watering and before I knew it it was 6PM. Hopefully we'll get the trip made tomorrow.
I wish I'd known, I had lots of things I could have been working on if I knew I would be home.
Today was one of those days where every muscle hurt. I had to shovel out the ghetto trailer. The bedding in there was soaking wet. I think I am going to buy a couple more heated bowls and make the chickens drink outside. That is also the biggest downfall to fermented feed. When it is in the building the bedding seems to get wet really fast. But if you put it outside it can get rained on and or freeze.
So far I am not saving any money on feed but the birds are still eating this stuff like it is liquid gold. I am waiting for the magic moment when they start eating less!!! At least the fat little pigs should put on weight.
My new birds really like it too.
I was out feeding the red stars and there stood one of my Swedish flower hens. She must have snuck out of the house when I was in there working yesterday. Heaven knows where she spent the night. I panicked when I saw her. Thank goodness I didn't have to chase her down. She was more interested in the feed bucket than trying to get away. I should have gotten that gate hung today as well. I have more d'uccles starting to lay and I really don't need any Swedish Flower d'uccles. I already have the d'ulandsk chicks as it is. Those are amazing looking birds though. They look almost totally Olandsk other than fuzzy legs. Cute as a button. Took a quick pick of the first one I picked up. It's a little cockerel and doesn't have as many spots as a girl but you can get the general idea. I am sure maidenwolf could show more examples.

PRETTY!!! Glad you saw the SFH and caught her before she got eaten for froze somewhere. That was a close call!

Awesome, thanks! So apparently I went to two 4-H meetings as a kid. I was talking to my mom about it. She said we stopped going because the meetings were boring. I seriously have no remembrance at all of it, so I can't vouch for that. Anyway, what sort of things could my 10 year old sister do in 4-H? You can private message me if you don't want to clog the chicken board with 4-H stuff. Not sure of the preferences on here.

So according to the CDC/USDA page I found on the TSC website, kids under 5 and pregnant/could be preg women, and elderly people shouldn't touch/handle chickens. Do you guys observe those guidelines? I want my child/future children to enjoy the chickens. Not sure if keeping them away from the chickens until they're 5 is necessary. But I am a bit of a germophobe when it comes to my child. My cousin's baby died under 1 year old from salmonella infection, not from live poultry however. But in any case, it hits close to home, so if I've been cutting raw meat or whatever, I always make sure to wash my hands verrrrry thoroughly. So, I'm wondering how careful I should be after being around the chickens. I feel like when I come in from doing stuff with the chickens outside, I am going to want to take a shower and change clothes before even touching my baby. That would be really hard to do since I am a SAHM and he needs my attention most of the day. What do you guys think I should do? I mean, he is going to be outside with me in the play yard most of the time when I'm caring for the chickens. I can't just leave him out there till I'm showered up! What is in your opinion necessary?

A: Not usually, but let us explain why. Humans do not catch salmonella from chicks or chickens the way you would catch a cold from your neighbor. Salmonella is food poisoning; you get it from eating infected meat or eggs. Even then, in order to get a case of salmonella, the meat and eggs you have eaten must be improperly prepared, that is, not completely cooked through. Or, you can also get salmonella by getting your hands or something else contaminated with feces and then putting that thing in your mouth. People more at risk for contracting Salmonella are very young, very old, pregnant or have immune systems that are already compromised in some way. The best way to keep your children and family safe from infection is by keeping your own hens whose conditions you can monitor, and by having your family members wash their hands after dealing with chickens. You want to have them wash hands after dealing with any pets, for that matter. Alcohol is an effective sanitizer for salmonella bacteria.


4-H is really diverse, and there are so many things you can do-- you can be a city kid and still find a lot to do with it. There are the arts-- like crafts, sculpture, painting, Photography, Textiles like sewing, knitting, crochet, weaving, and then applied sciences-- Rocketry, Foods (breads, cookies, cakes, pies, table setting), Entomology (capturing insects and cataloging them), Gardening-- there are many projects within gardening-- like flowers and fruits and veggies, and then there is Writing, and drama, and the list goes on and on!

I was so beat yesterday I read and caught up, but didn't multi or respond to any posts. Hawkeye, I'm so sorry about your crappy day (or couple of days) - hope your girl continues to improve now that you've got them all on Corrid. I did wonder when you were describing her behavior, if she wasn't looking for somewhere to lay her egg

Josie - so sorry to hear how bad you are feeling. When I got on last night to say I am free for the work day after all, I hadn't yet read the several pages of posts I'd missed to see you are feeling worse - hope you are doing better by now.

So I guess we need to make a decision about dinner so we can pass it on to Chooks. It seemed like Hu Hot got a lot of votes - should we just go with that, or does someone whose been to both think Genghis Grill would be better? (I've been to HuHot and while I wouldn't say its my favorite, I like it okay, and since WichitaKidd pointed out the refills are free, it might be the more economical option). If everyone can chime in on their vote/opinion, this morning, let's plan on having an answer to send her by lunch time....

I'm up for either one. I've never been to the HuHot, but I am game!

I should be able to make it tonight. Just let me know where & what time. I'm good with HuHot, but am open to other options. Would be nice to see everyone again.

A lot of that is overkill. Here is the reasons for that information: There is a lot of avian flu in the U.S. now. There are no cases confirmed in a human being however. The fear is that the bacteria or virus will mutate into a form that can be transmitted to humans. So the CDC is putting out warnings in case that should happen. Common sense is all that is needed right now. Buy chickens from a licensed hatchery or from a reputable breeder that has good healthy birds. Avoid being tempted to buy an older bird from just anyone. Make sure it is healthy and you know a little about their practices before you buy from them. Always quarantine a new bird from outside before letting it join your flock.
Most anyone you will see on this forum, if anything will go above and beyond normal precautions to keep their birds healthy.
Washing your hands before and after touching birds is just good practice.It also prevents spreading disease to your birds. I encourage children to handle birds. I have a couple of very young granddaughters who's parents are very over protective. And they let them handle my birds. Avoid letting other people walk in your coops other than family.
If nothing else keep a bottle of that disinfectant stuff at the coop and use that on your childs hands. There is no need to change clothes. you won't be rolling in the chicken poop unless you tend to fall down a lot like I do.

The hand is doing better, thanks HeChicken. I kind of irritated it yesterday shoveling litter but it's healing. The new birds are doing great. They are still acting a bit shy. I hope to get them some new digs built in the near future so they can roam a little further.

I'm having a bite of lunch and off for round 3 of carting kids around. DS will be finished with his ACT's and will be a new man once he arrives home. He's been terribly keyed up of late. Understandably, but still not all that much fun to live with. He really studied and worked hard but he has extremely high standards. I fear he will be disappointed with anything less than perfect. He's just built that way.

I have a broody buff, but no roo. Would like to try to let her hatch some babies. Does anyone have any spare fertilized buff eggs? I know it doesn't have to be buffs, but I just got rid of a mean RIR and barr rock hen, and a crazy americana rooster that just kept bullying and beating up my poor buffs, so my chickens (and myself) are still trying to get over our trauma of different breeds.

LJack, where are you located? I have plenty of fertilized "barnyard mix" eggs (some laid by buffs, the rooster is a respectful Welsummer roo with whom I've had no issues (and I've had roosters such as you're describing so I know where you're coming from). However it depends where you are. Someone on here may well be closer to you and have exactly what you're looking for.

and about the Fermented Feed..i think this was just too easy. I just made up my 2nd batch with Layer Rations i got from the feed store. I had less than 2 cups to "innoculate" the new tub ( only doing 8 cups/ mix ) from the chick starter. to start the new batch with, and with in 24 hrs.. it was bubbly and smelling like a brew.

Any way.. the Roos eat it up like they are teenagers in football training. there stools for the most part are more solid. and the odor is .. well lets just say less offensive.
I'm glad I heard about fermenting feed ... and have given it a try with success. just wana make sure i cant over feed them.
