I almost forgot.... I have a question for those of you who sell eggs for eating. My ducks are now producing more eggs than my DH and I can eat, so we were thinking of selling the eggs to recoup some of the costs of feed. However, I want to make sure I do things legally. Does anyone know what the law says about selling eggs privately? Any idea where I can go to get more information? I am getting roughly 2 eggs per day on average but have gotten as many as 5 in one day. I'm guessing that I will begin getting more eggs per day as the rest of my girls start laying as well (8 female ducks, 2 female geese).

Lizzy we got 14 inches with the first storm. We are still getting snow and I have no idea what the totals are.
I used to have wildblue satellite internet so I can empathize with you. I hated that crap!!! I would never have satellite internet again. Anyone need a dish? I still have one hanging on my house. And when I sent my box back in they never did give me credit for it!! It was a long long two years.
We have the same problems here. We are in a low spot and can't get any other options out here. We put a booster in and even though it was $350 it sure helped our cell phones. We have a 4G hot spot for our internet. We used to have a 3G before I bought this new one. The 3G didn't work well and cut us out when usage was high so I bought the 4G because it wasn't supposed to have those problems. And if we ever got 4G service out this direction it would increase our speeds. It was also supposed to work with our booster where the 3G wouldn't. No such luck. I finally moved the hot spot in here by my computer so it faces south instead of north. It is the only way to keep it going. It was right below the booster so it should have gotten the best signal. I hope the new unit works better than this one has. I paid too much for something that keeps dumping me and not coming back up. I have hopes though that if I wait long enough and complain enough I'll have decent reception again.
When we lived in town we were on cable and it was awesome. Fast dependable and never down. And a lot cheaper than I pay now. Really spoiled me. There isn't any cable available for 15 miles so I am just out of luck there.
I don't work for anyone but myself but depend on the internet to network and sell my birds etc. I figure any time I am down costs me money.

You can sell your eggs legally. You are not USDA inspected. Just can't sell them in a grocery store or some place like that. Duck eggs normally sell for about $4 a dozen. I sell mine for $2 just because I am so far out.

Is it legal to advertise them for sale? Do I have to wash the eggs before I sell them? Can I re-use chicken egg cartons? If so, do I have to do anything special to the egg carton to notate that they aren't graded chicken eggs? Is it legal to deliver them (I'm quite a ways out of town as well)?

So, I am laying here with chicks tucked next to me trying to keep them warm until the power comes back on. Lost some, but these are wiggling more so maybe they will make it. Hope the power comes back on sooner than later. I should have moved to Alaska when my DS asked me to. The winters where he is is milder than here. BIG drifrs to shovel AGAIN just to get to the geese and ducks. I hear the geese out in the pasture, the ducks are shut in the chicken house. Found the first goose egg last night - in the chicken house.

I did get out before the storm hit to get feed and food for me. Yea!!

I picked catalpa pods but have not stripped them yet. Should be plenty for the people that have said they would like some. I won't get them in the mail for a few days though. he he I am not going anywhere for a while.

My hands are freezing, I am going back under the covers.

We always use egg cartons that people save for us. We never have anyone ask us about the grade. The only time we sell different sizes, and mention them, is if we have a dozen pullet eggs or extra-extra large eggs. Yes, wash them - not because you have to, but because it is the nice-clean thing to do

Advertising: I can't think of a reason why you can't. We use word-of-mouth, church, work........ Facebook and craigslist are also free places to advertise. I don't know where you live, but Farmers Markets are also a great place to sell - and get weekly return customers.

You sell good fresh clean eggs and people will want them!

lizzy, I know people who sell a lot of ducks eggs because people love to bake with them. I don't have any ducks so I don't know, but the one lady said she actually sells more duck eggs than chicken eggs.

Danz, we bought our last Chrysler 300 way down in Oklahoma, it was like maybe a 3 hour trip or so, but it was what we were looking for other than the color. The dark blue was pretty, but living on a dirt road it was dirty all the time. That's why when we bought the new one this time we got silver so it wouldn't show the dirt quite so bad. My DH is babying his old car, which used to be mine for as long as he possibly can. The last repair bill was $1000, ouch. He still felt like it was less than making car payments, especially since we have to pay for the new one we got still. He says if he does end up buying another car it will be an SUV with all wheel drive, we sure need it here on this hill. Our cars get stuck in here when we have much snow at all & the only thing that gets us out is that old 4 wheel drive truck that eats gas like crazy. He spent $80 before the snow started again to fill it up, kind of surprised me that he filled it all the way up, but he has been having to drive it to work lately.

I think we got 5 or 6 inches of snow again, I haven't looked yet to see what the official total was, but I'm sure glad we didn't get what was predicted, this will do fine thank you. When this all starts melting off after having the other snow it's going to be a muddy mess here, I'm not looking forward to sliding down the front yard to get to my pens to take care of my birds. I have almost busted my butt quite a few times on that hill. It's already starting to melt here, it's falling down out of the trees now, so maybe it won't stay long, hopefully. I just looked at the forecast for the next week & it's above freezing every day so it should go away. We don't have sun here right now, it's cloudy. The news said the snow should be out of here now though, so that's good.

I had one more chick hatch last night, so it has now joined it's friends in the crate. I have two more eggs still in the hatcher that are due tomorrow & Thurs. yet. I'll try to get some chick pics later, they're all starting to get their wing feathers already, they're so darned cute. I cleaned out their crate yesterday & they already have feed all over the bottom they have spread around, they're messy little critters, but cute.

I just got back in from digging the coop out...again. There is a 3+ foot snow drift all around the coop. I haven't seen this much snow in years! Not complaining as we need the moisture. I managed to get all but the last quarter of the driveway done. I will have to go back out later and do that. I will get a pick posted of the coop later. My phone was out of space and wouldn't take the pick.

This is brownie just before she had her tripletts. She is pure bred nubian, which is a dairy goat. Her udder is bigger than a lot of cows.

So really need something to keep my feet dry, and something I can slip off when I get into the house so I don't drag chicken muck, not to mention clay mud into the house. They are NOT the best insulation. So I bought the boots a size larger than needed, and wear 2-3 pairs of socks under them, and stay cozy and clean for a really affordable price. Sara (these boots are a regular feature at our local walmart, not sure they are carried in all wallies, but probably all rural area wallies).
