Consolidated Kansas

Ok, just talked to the people at K-State. There will not be a pullet sale this spring. They are renovating buildings, and well just could not have birds in the mix of all those going's on. BUT, they are planning on a fall sale!! As soon as they get the eggs in, then a person can call in and reserve the number you want. I did not ask what these pullets are going to cost. I assume, that they will have the white leghorn type, and the red color, type also. As soon as I here the eggs are in, I will post again so you can and reserve the numbers you want.

I had heard that on the Poultry Swap that they weren't going to have pullets for sale this spring, but I hadn't heard they were going to have a fall sale. I will pass that on & do let us know when you hear of the date & prices if you find out. I have enough leghorns I think for this year, so I don't think I'm going to want any. I know of someone in Douglass that isn't that far from me who raises them, so I got one white & 3 browns from them. That is a lot handier for me since K-State is a bit of a drive, but it is nice for people who are closer to there.

Josie, I'll bet that was tiring for you to catch all those birds. I'll bet you'll be glad to have them moved though. That little Wheaten Ameraucana hen I got from you is cranking out the eggs lately, so that is nice, they're such a pretty blue too, I love those birds! I think I like them even better than the lavenders I have, who still by the way aren't laying. I'm keeping about 3 of the wheaten chicks I hatched to try to get a couple more hens, one really isn't enough. I just put a few more eggs in the incubator today.

I got my new Cream Legbars put in the pen a little while ago. The rooster still has some growing & maturing to do before he's usable for breeding, but he will get there. I can't wait to see how he grows out. I'm replacing my one that had the crooked comb, he was a nice sized rooster, but just has a crazy crooked comb, so I can't use him. I decided to let him free-range with my layer flock & maybe I'll get some olive eggers out of him. I brought home two little blue barred rock chicks too, I'm excited to see what color eggs they lay, whether it will be blue, brown, or green eggs.

I'm so thrilled the weather is warmer today, it was just nasty up in KC Sunday & Monday, cold & windy as everything & it snowed a little bit Monday morning. I'm glad to get back here where it's warmer now. I'm looking forward to this week, I'm bringing my little goat doelings home, I can't wait to get them here & get them settled in.

Yay! I have internet for the first time in days. It's off and on so apparently 120 different tech folks don't have a clue what they are doing. My SIM card didn't come today as it was supposed to. I called the post office first thing this morning. I was supposed to hear from some tech people within 24-48 hours and it's been more like 86 hours...still no call. I have got plenty to tell these folks when this is all resolved. I lost pup sales and am days behind on projects cause I couldn't get to information I need.
Welcome to the new people. I skimmed. Shell55, I'm glad you got to help with the hatch.
My big news is I hatched my first turkey poult from the midget whites. I had put the first three eggs in the incubator and one of them was fertile. YAY! It is with a lavender chick and seems to be healthy.
My young olandsk pullets I got for Christmas both laid their first egg yesterday!
I figured out why I was loosing chicks and not sure what I can do about it for a while. I have some d'uccles which keep having recurring sneezing. I was loosing their chicks and could't figure out why. Well after the last chick started going down hill I checked it and it was starting to sneeze and wheeze. I was putting all the new hatches in a bin in the house. I think what happened was some of the d'uccles transferred their cold to their eggs and in turn those chicks infected other chicks. I was afraid to medicate much so I put some chick saver and some vetRX in the water. They seem to be doing fine now.
I am really worried that my little turkey will catch a cold. So that is why I have him and the lavender together away from the other chicks. I sure hope it helps. Just my luck!
I've treated those birds with all kinds of things and cleared them up but the sneezing keeps coming back. I an almost ready to just cull the whole bunch. If they weren't so cute I probably would.
I've got a ton to do so I'd better get going. I feel like my lifeline was severed without having contact with you guys.

Anyway~~~
Hawkeye, what was it that I had in my show bag that you did not at the fall classic? Hmmmm can't remember, was it the little spray bottles for the coops? Thanks goodness for show bags!!

Maidenwolf, April 20th is the spring show in Sedlia. Mo. They are going to have a table top display of serma. That goes for anybody that is interested. They do have sale coops there also. If anybody is looking for anything special. Usually the birds that are sold are not up to ABA-APA show standards, but usually will wipe out all competion at a local fair.
Yeah, it was the spray bottles! Spraying down the cages before cooping in the birds was just super smart of you! I loved showing with you! I have no idea if I can get to Sedalia or not this Spring, but it was something I want to do. But with things being as they are, we are fast becoming more and more into the unknown. Ugh.

I have been reading this thread for quite some time and thought I better finally introduce myself and say Hi! I live about an hour east of Wichita. We got chickens a year ago...started with 4 and now have around 35...ha...guess i'm figuring out the chicken math. I really enjoy the chickens though and love hatching chicks!! I have a 3 year old son that loves them too! I have Cochins, Barred Rocks, Gold Sex-links, Silver Laced Wyandottes and a few Silkies. I just finished helping my MIL, jeanniec, hatch some Lavender and Lemon Cuckoo Orpington eggs from Chicken Danz and had a great hatch. Now I am really wanting to hatch some chicks for myself again, just not sure what I want to hatch yet. I really enjoy following this thread and am learning so much from all of you. I look forward to continuing to learn and get new ideas from all of you!
WELCOME Shell55!!! Just jump into whatever conversation interests you! Or start posting pictures or talking about whatever it is you'd like to hear more about! Sounds like you have a great mix of birds.

I love seeing your birds! Looks like you've gotten in some new breeds?? It never fails to amaze me that the birds are so happy in WATER in near freezing temps! ha! This one-- the picture above is just stunning. That drake is pretty darned awesome.

Well here is the multi with the sick hen....hmmm. Well I sure hope she is feeling better soon! Bummer about your pens getting all wet! That is the worst.

Well we spent all day yesterday out in the freezing cold drizzle finishing chicken and goose pens but they are done enough to move everyone in! So I have a trailer and am going to load everyone up tonight and haul down in the AM. Still LOTs to do with setting up perches, nest boxes, feeders, waterers etc but will be good to have everyone in one place finally. I also have to pack up Molly and the barn cat Lily. Gonna be a full ride down.

Horses have settled in well and were all taking a nap together on the south side of the pasture this AM in the sunshine which was really cute. (All laying down)

Wish I could have taken pics this weekend, brought my camera but forgot the memory card! Geez!
th.gif
WOW-- you worked out in the freezing rain to finish those pens?? I just can't even imagine how awful that was! I'm so sorry, but I'm also really glad they are at a point where you can move birds into. Very sweet the horses were napping together. Glad they were careful when they scoped it out. I've been witness to some pretty scary stuff introducing new horses. We always walk the fence with them and then turn them out. Sounds like they did great considering the mud, etc... maybe that actually helped slow them down, though. I can't wait to see pics! How does it feel to have the animals in the new home?

Get out of my cage!

ICE!!! Yikes! Your pens always look so nice. Of course, it's wet from all the rain, but everyone looks happy. I LOVE this photo above! He is telling you what's what! But what an adorable face he has!

My sister lives in Haysville and she is always telling me they aren't allowed.
I have friends in Haysville that have chickens-- but I'm glad this was answered before I got on here! Sounds like there is no limit which is nice.

Hawkeye, glad your girl is doing better. We've had a few that came down with similar symptoms this winter. That VetRX is great stuff!

I counted my birds today... I have way more than I thought I did!
hide.gif
100 on the nose.

I thought ahead this year and bought 4 tons of layer and a ton of chick starter. I have never spent so much money at once on animals, lol. But I got a great deal on it all and had exactly just enough space to store it all. Unfortunately, the poor delivery guys got their truck stuck in my driveway! I think after all their hard work and inconvenience, I will go buy a McDonald's gift card for them and give it to them tomorrow when they come get the truck. I figure it can't hurt to make a good relationship with the Co-op guys.

One good thing did come from this, though. Hubby finally agreed (after 2 years) that it is time to re-gravel the driveway.
clap.gif
Thank you! Yeah, the VetRX did make a big difference in how she felt and could breathe, for sure. That is a LOT of birds! I hope I never get that high! As it is, I am always trying to sell off birds. Definitely time to get more rock on the drive way! We have lived here 13 years and have had our rock guy come do our drive way 3 times now. It's cheaper when you keep on top of it! That is a crazy picture-- he was VERY stuck. Poor guys. That sounds like a really nice thing to do for them-- the gift card.

o here is the finished hoop coop. The tarp on it runs the full length and is the kind with the reflective silver side. There should always be somewhere in the coop that is in shade.

And here is the gate on it:

Now I just need to plan the interior.
Love that coop!!! I need a couple of these! I went up fast, which I love! Wow, that silkie is an awesome looking girl!
wink.png
Mine are like that too-- they love the attention and would be under foot the whole time you're out there. But they are just laid back and friendly anyway.

Okay guys, I talked with Chicken Danz this evening and she'll be back on as soon as she gets a new sim card for here internet connection. You all know she's been having a hard time with it, well it finally just gave up. So she should be back in a couple days or so.

sapphireblu, that's a lot of birds, yet, perfectly understandable.
wink.png

I had about 170 birds last year, culled down to the ones I needed for my program, hatched from those and culled again, keeping only a few birds. Right now I am at an all time low with only between 30 - 35 birds. I have some in the brooder and more being hatched at HEChickens, more on the way this March and April from Idaho, Colorado and Arizona. I'm upping my game with standard bred poultry this year and hoping to continue to build size and type with my Alohas in the meantime.

I'm waiting to receive my copy of the APA, Standard of Perfection so I can learn how to define the type of bird I'm breeding toward in my head. I love spring and I love having chicks and am really happy with the Swedish Flowers, German New Hamps and Black Ameraucanas I currently have. The Swedish and Ameraucanas have started laying regularly -- I'm so thrilled. Most of their eggs are already good sized eggs and not what I expected for pullets. I have a few of the Swedish and Ameraucanas in the batch of eggs I put in the incubator Sunday, so we'll see how their fertility is in a few days. I'm going to have quite a bit more to put in the bator next week with they way they are laying now. It'll be nice to have something to sell to help offset expenses.
Poor Danz, I noticed she was no where to be seen. You are down to 30 birds or so?!?! Why is it I can hardly believe that??? LOL!! I think you'll see a BIG difference in the standard bred birds vs hatchery. The coloring and type will be so much more amazing. I'm still in awe over the barred rock chicks we got up at Franks! I have one that is obviously a little boy-- his comb is already getting red!! The others all look like girls to me... but I could be wrong! I need to set up some mug shots and post them! ha! I'm excited to see how your Aloha project comes along! I think they are just gorgeous. I think I'm going to get rid of most all of my layers and just go with the heritage barred rocks and keep them fresh and turned over with the start I got from Frank, and now I know where to get more! I figure it won't hurt to sell off the extras since they will be super decent birds that are tons better than the hatchery.

We just got back from KC tonight about 9:00. I had to go up for my Dr. appt up there for my arthritis Dr. I had some x-rays done of my hands & found out my middle finger & ring finger on my right hand have bone spurs that are fusing my joints in those fingers. I had been wondering why those two fingers were getting so bad, they're swollen all the time & I can't grip with them well any more due to them not bending well. He told me that I eventually wouldn't be able to bend them at all. He's sending me to a hand surgeon to see what he could do to help me, so we'll see how that goes. I'm not looking forward to another surgery of any kind, I have had quite a few over the years for various things, but I guess if it will help the function in my hand I use all the time it would be worth it. They have been hurting quite a bit too. We stopped on the way back & picked up a pair of Cream Legbars from Eileen & two of her blue barred rocks that I think anyway are pullets, I hope they are. It should be interesting to see what color eggs they lay since they are project birds. It was so darned muddy there when we were getting the birds that I slid in the mud & almost fell. I sure did get my shoes & jeans all muddy. I'm pretty tired from not sleeping well last night, so I think I'll turn in early tonight.
Oh gosh! I'm so sorry about your hands. I hope the surgeon can do something that will get you fixed up and feeling good again. No fun sliding around in the mud. I hate that. Good thing you didn't do a face plant-- THAT would be MY luck. Seriously. If I'm going to fall, it's going to be in mud or in a puddle. Hope you catch up on your sleep!

Don't remember who asked about prices on started birds near POL. But those seemed like decent prices. If they were out of show lines or anything like that, they would cost you a LOT more than that. Depending on the breed, who the breeder is, and what you're doing with them, can up you prices pretty fast. And like Josie said-- you want to ONLY buy birds that look bright and shiny and healthy. Bright eyes, bright and shiny feathers (not dirty). Look at the rears-- if they have a runny mess coming off the rear, you do NOT want that bird. That shows a sign of illness. Could be coccidiosis or any number of things. (BTW cocci is very easily treatable, but no sense in buying a bird with it) At that age (under 8 months), they will not have had a molt-- so if they are missing feathers and he tells you they have been molting, don't believe it for a second.

My silkie is hanging in there. She's not 100%, but she's eating and drinking and is not sneezing very much at all now. She'll be ready to go back into the flock in another week I think. I want to make VERY sure she is healthy before putting her back in. I have no idea what she had, but guessing bacterial. Especially since the Baytril worked so fast. Have her on Denagard right now and I'm not seeing much head shaking or anything. (nasal drainage)

Doing lots and lots of laundry today. Have a million and one things to get done. Sigh.

Hi all. I just got all caught up on reading again. Looks like you all have been as busy as we have been. I loved all of the pics of the new hoop coops, and Trish, your coop looks amazing. Josie, so glad that your coops are coming together. Sounds like some of you had a fun trip to a poultry farm. Where is that? Deerfield, I have a 15 passenger too and would love an outing. I also have a trailer we could use for more space if needed. Hi to all of the newbies. This is a great place to hang out. I've learned so much on here, I can't imagine how things would be if I hadn't.

All of my chickens are well, I have so many I don't even know for sure how many. The little kids are playing chicken store with the chicks right now. Poor things. My brooder room is filled to the brim, my dh got another pen ready just last night and I can move another group out there whenever I'm ready. It shouldn't be this full all the time, but ordering from the hatchery gave me more chicks of the same age than I've ever had at once. We haven't lost any, but I do see that they behave differently being in bigger groups.

Maidenwolf, I'm liking your white cochin. :) I loved all of the duck pics, I've never seen some of those before. We have just a few ducks and they are enjoying the pond, I am surprised that they haven't become coyote food so our dog must be doing a good job. Danz, I'm glad you are able to get online but I would sure hate to the person who gets your earful. You've been waiting too long and I'm sure it's time they hear about it.

Hawkeye, was it you with the sick chicken? Glad she's doing better.

All this talk about the city codes and such, I'm just so glad we don't have to deal with any of that. Sarajoy, you are moving to the Fredonia area? I love to drive to Fredonia, it's just one of the prettiest drives ever. When are you moving?

I have some pics on my camera, but they've been there so long it's time to take new ones. I have more hatching in 2 weeks and I'm just as excited as I always am. I need to go get busy, all I've done all day is read on here to get caught up. I have an excuse to sit that long though, the kids are sick and thye need to snuggle. I took that as an opportunity. My dd just said that she wants a chicken that lays Cadbury eggs, I'm not sure how that would work. :) Have a great day all.

I can't wait to see photos of your doelings! Okay, this was interesting for me about the blue barred rocks. I assumed that being barred rocks they would lay brown eggs - what did they mix in to make them a blue barred, that would also produce colored eggs?

Yay! I have internet for the first time in days. It's off and on so apparently 120 different tech folks don't have a clue what they are doing. My SIM card didn't come today as it was supposed to. Wow, congrats on the poult. I can't believe you've already hatched a poult and I'm still awaiting the first egg. I guess Midget Whites start to lay a lot earlier than Royal Palms! I'm glad you figured out why you were losing the chicks - at least that way you can take the necessary steps to avoid it continuing to happen. Sorry about your internet woes - I hope you get it all sorted out soon.

I'm glad to hear your silkie is doing better - I hope she continues to improve.

I am really liking the hoop coop - it was really very easy to build and it went pretty fast. And its so roomy in there. I'm glad I went with the 10' width as being as short as I am, I can still walk around upright in most of it and it gives them a little more room. My DH can't be comfortable in it though so if you are a taller person, its probably better to go with the 8' wide and make it that bit taller. The shorter height on it also made my lumber for the gate go a little further too. I had budgeted 3 2x2's for each gate - one for each of the verticals and the third to cut for the horizontals. As it turned out, I cut the verticals and realized the bits I had cut off were wide enough for the horizontals. I even had to cut a little piece off each of those and the two pieces I cut off because my triangulating pieces. So I was able to build the whole gate with only two 2x2's and having leftovers is always a good thing in my book.

Sapphireblu, how did they go getting the truck out the rut today?

had several ameracauna banty,s last year. I sold said bantys in the fall and put 30 eggs in incubator..That group hatched Oct. 31 and they are now starting to lay. They are extrmely young I realize, but they seem much smaller than the parent stock. It could be my memory as the older I get the better I was. I will know this fall whrn these pullets are older

I know there is Veterycin made for using in the eyes too, they have both kinds at Atwoods I think.
Those certainly seem like reasonable prices for chickens at point of lay, especially the Barnvelders because they are in the rare category. I ordered some chicks from a breeder for about $9 a chick & they will be newly hatched when I get them next month.
Welcome shell55! It sounds like you have a good variety of chickens. I hatch quite a few different breeds myself.
HEChicken that looks really good, it's very similar to mine. I wish I could just have all hoop coops now that I have one, they're so much better than the other pens I have. I've got one more to build soon for the broiler chicks coming. We're going to have to get on that really soon.

Chicken Danz ... i am sure glad you are back online.. i look so forward to your posts. congrats on your new turkey hatch. my lavenders and lemon chicks that i hatched from your eggs are doing so good and are so cute.. i am so impressed with the fertility of those eggs. if you need someone to vouch for your hatching eggs i can sure do that for you..

Wow I really like the duck pics, so sweet.
I cant wait for the weather to warm up this week, there is so uch to start cleaning up out there so I can start building onto the coop. I have birds to sort and some to sell, it is endless. I am trying to give friends and fellow BYCers the chance at them first.
We stopped by a country store in louisburg today that gets their chicks from cackle and they had 2 tiny white silkie chicks left
celebrate.gif
I was so excited, I grabbed them up and brought them home. I will post some pics later. I have been looking so long, my daughter was tearful with joy.
What a day, looking forward to a good night sleep and hopefully brighter skies tomorrow.

HEChicken, She crossed a Cream Legbar Rooster with a Barred Rock hen. They're interesting & they come out all different. I got two that actually are barred just like the barred mom except more bluish than black, but I saw some in the brooder that had crests, that was kind of crazy, they were dark gray, almost black & then there were some that didn't look very barred, but looked bluish. It's just something she's playing around with I think as a "project". So that's why she said she didn't know what color eggs they would lay because the Cream Legbars lay a blue or blue/green egg & of course the Barred Rocks lay brown. Anyway, I only wanted them for my laying flock, so it didn't matter to me what color egg they lay. It will be interesting to see if they lay as well as the regular Barred Rocks also.

My Cream Legbar rooster that got ousted from his pen today due to his replacement being in there was really confused when it was time for them all to go in to roost. I had to run him into his old pen & then catch him & carry him to the main coop. He just couldn't figure out what was going on, poor guy. He hung around the new coop & pens all day, he just knew that was where he was supposed to be. I took him out in the front yard & turned around & he was right back out there again.

I was out there this evening kind of laying out pallets & trying to figure out how I want to make this goat shelter. I have enough pallets to make a plenty big enough shelter for a couple of goats, I'm just trying to decide now what to cover the outside of the pallets with. I have sheets of tin I got free that are in fairly good shape, most of them anyway. But I'm not sure if I want to just use the tin for the roof & cover the sides with OSB or something. What do you all think? I also have some pieces of the corrugated roofing I have left from my coop that I could use for the roof, it would have to be pieced because I don't have full sheets of it.

Danz, I'm glad you're back & congrats on the turkey hatching too!
