Consolidated Kansas

I am building an actual chicken house in my hoop coop and it will be used all year long. It is probably going overboard but that is the space I need for now. My next one will have a double house in the center with pens on each side.
I did sell another 6 birds yesterday for 4 H showing. I got a comment which I couldn't figure out if it made me feel good or made me panic! LOL! This girl has been here every year about this time to buy 4H birds. She said "Wow you really have downsized. There's tons less birds than I've ever seen here."
So I'm asking myself why on earth I am feeding so much more feed and not making much money!?!
I think the thing is more that I have eliminated all the mixed layers that free ranged all over the yard. Things are more confined to breeder groups and more houses now than before. I sure haven't reduced my work yet which is the main thing I really wanted to accomplish. It would be nice if I could just decide to raise one thing and leave it at that. I just don't think that could ever happen.
I did order a sweeter heater yesterday. I ordered a larger one. I am thinking about building a large wooden brooder box and putting it in my basement for now and using the sweeter heater on it. I don't like the idea of putting chicks down there because of the dust that will get in the heat system and the fact that I had mold form when I had birds down there before. Maybe I can put my dehumidifier down there to make sure it stays healthy. I really need another brooder house but I don't dare bring that up or I'll be single for sure!!!

I like the idea of these hoop coops. Especially how you are doing it with the chicken house built in. I really like the idea of the one you are talking about with the double coop in the middle with pens on each side. I'll be anxious to see how that turns out for you. I built another brooder a few weeks ago that is 3-tier and so far I am really liking it. I am using heat lamps in it right now but have been looking at the sweeter heaters for a while now and think I might like those better.

I'm home on the puter today cuz its raining/sleeting today. The Amish crew JUST finished the reshingling yesterday before this started. Glad that much is done. They were supposed to work on the siding tomorrow, but if the weather isn't better we'll have to see. I'm just waiting for them to get back to the coop!! They did the frame a couple weeks ago, but haven't been able to make it back till yesterday when a crew of five stripped off the old shingles (two layers) and put up the new - all in less than one day's work. I was astonished.... Sara
YAY for a new roof! So glad they were able to finish it fast! I'm sure they'll be fast with the siding too when they get to it. Glad you are happy with their work.

Just wanted to introduce myself! Living out in Southwest Kansas. Currently have a "flock" of 46 chickens of various breeds.
WELCOME to the group! You'll love this thread! Sounds like you have a pretty good head start on your chicken math.

Have faith sister, it will all work out.

Hawkeye you are dead on right about why I got rid of 28 chickens.
lau.gif
I sold some more today. I'll catch up later. Gotta go right now!
Just wait.... my bad "month" has not ended with yesterday's loss. ARGH! But yeah, I did think it was hilarious that you were asked why you "had" to get rid of 28 chickens. Just wait until everyone gets to know each other better, and it will all become funnier! hehehe!

Any One in Wichita area with a Silkie's... hen s or chick (s) this up comming weekend..

I have a Wedding (.. if all go's well ) in Derby and I thought i would ask about availability.

It was the only one i could not order with my chicks.. and I'm hoping to get 1-3 to add to my flock..

Thanks.. if you have any informaion.. pm is ok too.

Deb
I *might* have a hen I'd part with ONLY if you have a super fortress enclosed area and coop for a silkie that would NEVER let her free range. She can NOT see. She is pet quality but stunning looking, but she has one of the biggest crests. I'm keeping her as a pet for now since she can't be out unsupervised and left out in the yard. She needs a secure pen with a top since she won't be able to see flying predators either. She's slow because of how much crest she has. I'm happy to keep her with me forever or send her to a nice secure home where a dog or raccoon or hawk won't kill her. I just have her to sell (and I'm being very picky) and then I do have a couple of silkie roosters too that I'm not being so picky about. :) I have two pet quality roosters and one breeder quality that could be shown, because he's nice enough but in a BIG show-- like Nationals he didn't hold up well, he got 4th place.

Argh... woke up with a headache. I'm sure it is from my sinus and allergy season is definitely here. Worked 12+ hrs yesterday so by the time I got home, I was dead tired. I had just enough strength to get the feeds out but no more energy to get anything else done. Just have to remind myself that only 12 more days and Tax season will be over.

Looks pretty dark, wet, and cold outside.... AGAIN!

I need some nice warm weather. The baby chicks are almost 2 weeks old so I've to really get the 2nd horse stall converted to a chicken coop. I'll definitely get the much needed work done this weekend while the weather is supposedly spring-like. With all the hoop coop talk lately, I may need to look into that as well. I can put one on the East side of the horse barn (it is a 5-stall horse barn) and put the chickens in there. Do you guys' chickens live in the hoop coop all year long or they just get put in the hoop coop during the day? I need to look at some of the hoop coop pictures and see how to put a roost and nest boxes in there if the chickens are to stay there long term.

Gotta get back to work. It will be another long one day, I'm afraid.

Kuan
Yeah, I NEED the nice weather too. I'm just lifeless over here. I hope your sinus stuff cleras up quickly. I had that a week or two ago and just took decongestant and it cleared up without having to see the Dr. Take pictures of your stall coops! I'm using two horse stalls as coops, too!

I think it's a compliment since it's obvious you are getting more organized and more down to business on what you're breeding! So, that's great! I have no idea why you aren't seeing the reduction in feed, though. Can't wait to hear about how your sweeter heater works! I want to know all about it!

Oh - and I didn't add in the cost of building the coop or my recent Rcom incubator purchase because if I did, it would just be depressing. I justify that by saying that in the event we move, the coop can stay and be used as an outbuilding by the next owner so it increases the value of our property just by being built, and the incubator was a gift because I used my Christmas money to purchase it. Those are my stories and I'm sticking to them

Yeah, I'm with you. Let's just be QUIET with what we're spending on these birds!! Eeeks!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So my month from Heck (being polite here, people) continues.... I went out to the coop and I had TWO DEAD hens!! They had gotten out this morning and got mauled just on the other side of their fence. No blood, and only a few feathers were removed from their backs. Obviously the work of my neighbors two dogs. I did NOT see the dogs do it, but they were in my yard yesterday tracking my hens and I went out there and yelled at them and chased them off. My layers are in a chain link pen, but there has been a hole lately they are squeezing thru in the mornings to hunt for worms in the yard. The dogs dont want to EAT, they want to torment and chase and maim and kill. Well, I've freakin' HAD it with his stinkin' dogs. I called my DH this morning and told him about my two birds-- which by the way, one was a barred rock!!! One of my BEST layers!! The other was a poor Polish-- and those things can't hardly even see to get away. I'm just ANGRY. I'm waffling between getting my gun ready to shoot them when I see them next or going over there and having a chat with the guy to give him the chance to keep his dogs on his property. I'm just ready to shoot, quite frankly. Those dogs are ALWAYS on my property and I've HAD it. I'm sort of tapping my fingers wondering which way to go with this. On the one hand, I can shoot them and drag them out to my tree line. End of story, no one ever knows. On the other, I can talk to him and alert him to my plans... and then have an angry neighbor because he knows I'm going to shoot his d@mn dogs the second I see them on my property again. I need to calm down and think rationally about this. Now.... if this had happened to my silkie flock, there would be NO words... I would be SSS for sure. This guy is just freakin' lucky that it was my layers and I'm not too emotionally wrapped up in them.
I think it "looks" like you have a lot less birds because there are fewer birds wandering around the yard? I actually thought maybe you had more birds just now they are in pens and separated....
What a pretty girl! Does she have split wing? I only ask because I am terrible at spotting it in pics and it kinda looked like it? I am really sorry about your hens. Loose dogs are the worst because they have an irresponsible owner somewhere! We had a beagle up at the house in Rantoul that always came down and I don't think it would bother the birds but I talked to the neighbors and they were having trouble keeping it in anyway and eventually found it a new home. They had taken it in as a stray and couldn't keep it home so I think once people started complaining about they decided it wasn't worth upsetting the neighbors. I am so far behind so sorry to new folks who I didn't welcome or anyone's important post that I missed. I have been so busy with two houses and getting ready for a baby. I am kinda of down on the nursery right now because we had a friend's husband who offered to come over and paint it for really cheap but when he came over he told me he wouldn't paint the walls until they were completely ready which to him is like new finished drywall. I was planning on skimming them with joint compound but they are never going to be that nice because I am not a master plasterer! So I guess I am back to doing it all myself.
HEchicken-Your wellie roo is doing good! He is too funny, I let the hens out to free range and he was in the barn cackling and talking away about his food to them! It was super cute. He has the best crow too! Such a nice traditional rooster crow, wish he liked me a bit more but oh well. I think he is going to be a wonderful gentleman with the ladies once he gets let out of chicken jail.
I am super aggravated this morning because DH's dad wants to do all these projects on the house and property and I said no about fourteen times because I don't want men here working while I am trying to get the house ready for a baby and have the dogs carrying on all day. Despite my clear "no's" to both DH and his dad he showed up this AM with guys to look at the summer kitchen foundation which my two barn cats are currently residing in until the dogs are on their invisible fence and I can safely let the cats out loose on the property. UGH! I am so sick of people showing up and barking dogs etc. I am over it for a while, it is stressful to have people here and wandering around.
I sold two sebbie ganders on Sunday to a really nice lady who has a beautiful pond for them to go out on during the day and she pens everyone up at night. Lucky boys!!! I was envious of her pond, it was gorgeous! Someday I would really like to have a pond for my geese to go out on, they are so beautiful out swimming. We looked at one house with a pond but the house was horrid!
Hope everyone has a good day and this dreary weather lifts soon!
Wow there was a lot of posts while I have been away lol. I am not going to be able to get thru them. I hope everyone had a great easter. Mine was a full day as usual and lots of yummy food and colorful eggs.
I have been busy hatching and selling and trying to spend more time with my family. I am so happy that the weather is starting to warm. The sunshine just makes you feel good and it does a number for the animals too.
Good to see you back. How is that new incubator working for you now? I do wish it was warm today. I stepped outside and thought I'd freeze on the spot. I thought the forecast was calling for warmer temps. It's gloomy and cloudy here today which I am sure isn't helping.
I'll be interested to hear how you like the Sweeter heater. I was going to suggest a dehumidifier in the basement but then kept reading and saw that you already had that thought yourself.
I'll let you know. I have to determine if it will be worth the extra expense. I did find another vender that had one and saved me on shipping.
That is interesting that the 4H girl noticed you have fewer birds. Do you track your expenditures? I have an Excel Spreadsheet that is awesome (downloaded it - I didn't create it) at tracking everything. You can enter how many birds you have and each day update it with how many eggs you collect. You also add in every time you buy feed, entering both the number of pounds and how much it cost. There is a tab for each month of the year and a summary tab that collates all the data. It tells you your egg laying % - i.e. if you have 20 hens and get 15 eggs, your rate is 75% but it adds it up over the course of each month, and also gives you a yearly average so at the end of the year you can see what the overall was. It also tells you how many pounds of feed you use per egg. While raising chicks, that number can seem high because you have to go through quite a few pounds of feed for the 5 months it takes to grow them out, without getting a single egg. By the time you get that first egg, you might have used 20lb of feed per egg, but it goes down over time as that hen lays 4-5 eggs a week. The spreadsheet also has places to enter other supplies you might purchase, flock purchases, sales of eggs or live birds or hatching eggs, and it gives you a bottom line, of how much money you are making losing.
wink.png
I've been using the spreadsheet since the get-go, and the first year I actually came out with a monthly income of $2.97. The only thing that doesn't factor in is the eggs we ate, so I suppose it would be fair to say I had a monthly income of $2.97 PLUS free eggs. After that, I did allow it to become a hobby vs. being adamant that the birds pay for themselves, and it has been a monthly loss ever since. I am about to take delivery of a shipment of chicks next week, so the loss will only increase over the next few months. Oh - and I didn't add in the cost of building the coop or my recent Rcom incubator purchase because if I did, it would just be depressing. I justify that by saying that in the event we move, the coop can stay and be used as an outbuilding by the next owner so it increases the value of our property just by being built, and the incubator was a gift because I used my Christmas money to purchase it. Those are my stories and I'm sticking to them
Are you using the chicken tracker? I have that downloaded but not using it. I have a tremendous loss in my birds. My biggest expense other than food is housing and equipment. I don't even want to know what I've spent. I would have to successfully raise birds for 50 years to break even on housing. I did track expenses my first year and lost a couple thousand dollars. That didn't include the cost of the initial chick purchase either. If I ever get my breeding facilities done and just start raising and selling I will start tracking it all. In other words, right now I don't want to know!
I like the idea of these hoop coops. Especially how you are doing it with the chicken house built in. I really like the idea of the one you are talking about with the double coop in the middle with pens on each side. I'll be anxious to see how that turns out for you. I've taken a couple pictures and will take more and post them when I can get back out there and get doors etc on. Then it will be time to start the second one. I will have to buy a whole new lot of lumber for the second one. I do already have the panels. I bought them when I found them on sale. I've also considered building some hoop coops side by side to save on lumber but I really don't have a place suitable to put a string of them. If I figure it right I could save about 45% on framing lumber that way. I have so many projects to work on it's hard to determine which one should come first.
Hawkeye I feel your anger for you. You know I ended up shooting my neighbors dog that kept coming over and eating my duck eggs and chasing my chickens. It really was an accident. I just pointed and shot not even thinking the bullet would travel that far. He never made it back home and I am not sure how far he did make it. They never saw him again after that and I never told on myself. This is the same guy that hit my chicken with the car and waited days to let me know then laughed about it. I figure we are even at this point. I know you've had your problems with these dogs for some time and I know from what you have said the guy is a jerk. Is this the guy with the dogs that were crabby with you and your kids as well? Anyway, you can get some rock salt loads or bird shot? That might be enough to keep them from coming back. But if not, I would shoot and then discard the bodies. Let him have no way to prove it. If the dogs are bothering you they are probably bothering other people. No reason to let that go on.It is your right to protect your livestock on your property.
I wasn't going to mention this because it isn't my place but Medawinks has had further problems resulting in the death of some of her birds from her neighbors. I just have no tolerance for this kind of thing. I can understand an error but when it gets down to refusing to do anything about your animals or out and out destruction of your animals then it is time to stand up for yourself.
I am sure the increased feed costs is a result of less vegetation for the birds and less free ranging. I'd still like to get a system going where I could let them out to free range without a danger of being bred by the wrong rooster. I am hoping though as spring comes things will improve some.
Josie I am glad you posted. I am just heartbroken. I switched my incubating to the dry method for the sebbies. I had 8 fertile and developing eggs due to hatch today. Well since I changed methods they have all died but one. I almost got sick. Nothing else at all changed and I didn't move the eggs, just changed incubator conditions. I had a great hatch last year and this year it's been a bust. The two original I hatched from the old method are doing great and have learned to spill their water and make messes as fast as I can clean them up. They have become very attached to me and yell every time I leave the room.
Had you actually hatched using that method? I just can't figure out what else might have gone wrong. I am very careful not to touch the eggs and kept them and their surroundings fertile. I even had them in a new hatching tray I ordered. I have several more eggs in there and I'm afraid to candle them.
I do have the two girls that went broody and at least 2 more girls out there but I'm not finding eggs. I wonder if the broody girls are collecting the ones the others lay. I did find on newly laid by the the water bucket a couple days ago. One of the other girls is Trudi's curly girl and she definitely should be laying. I have no idea how many eggs the girls have under them. Their nests keep getting higher and higher. It's funny to watch them pick up one piece of straw at a time and carefully tuck it in just the right spot. I've seen them even stand up and turn half way around to be sure it gets tucked just so-so. If they do hatch babies would you recommend letting them raise them or take them and raise them myself?
Josie, great eye!! That is exactly why she is Pet quality-- but not only does she have split wing something terrible, but the ends are twisted and she has a bit of a wry tail. It's not severe, but enough so, that I'm not going to breed her. She's in with the girls right now and happy as a clam. I have no need for her, but don't really HAVE to get rid of her either. Unless someone really wanted to take care of her. These guys just don't eat much, so it's not a big deal to have a few extra hanging around. Glad you found a nice home for your sebbie ganders! I'm sorry about the people hanging around. But if they are going to fix the foundation..?? That would be pretty nice to have done? Maybe you can talk them into painting your baby room, too!
--oh and I forgot, I guess I have TWO pet quality hens! LOL I forgot about Yoda! She has gold leakage on her chin. I can't use her either. But they are great with chicks. She molted out gorgeous, it's such a shame I can't use her either. I have toyed with the idea of selling her to someone who is starting a Blue Partridge project. She'd be great for that.
i am really sorry for your troubles hawkeye.. my first instinct would be to shoot them if i knew how to load the shotgun.. but then it would probably start a fued between you and your neighbor.. i think i would go talk to him and when he offers to pay for them .. make him pay a good price..or better yet send him a bill ...
Thank you. I do know how to load.
I'm still trying to remain calm. And still debating on talking to my neighbor or just doing what I will and be done with it. I don't think he'd offer to pay anyway, I know this guy. I'd rather get rid of his dogs and end the problem. Ive never threatened to shoot them before-- but I know my neighbor down the road with calves certainly has. He'd never suspect me. And even if he did, I have every right, and his dogs have no business being over here. His dogs have a history of chasing people and animals (like horses and cattle) and people all hate his dogs. Still stewing over here.......
Hawkeye, I normally am a proponent of trying to talk to the neighbors and work something out but in your situation I know you've had ongoing issues with these dogs and the neighbor is not likely to be interested in doing anything about it, so in this case I'd lean towards taking action instead. I do have one suggestion for something you can try first though. We had several dogs who used to visit here on a regular basis the last half of last year. I didn't mind too much as long as they didn't mess with my birds. One is a Burmese Mtn Dog - I don't know if you know them but they are the size of a GP. Anyway, he used to be here everyday and didn't show any interest in my birds until one day he visited while my ducks were down at my pond and I saw him start chasing them. I won't stand for that. DH was with me and he grabbed his rifle and took aim, deliberately aiming close to the dog but not trying to hit him. He fired and the bullet whizzed right close to the dog who took off like a shot. That was months ago and we haven't seen him - on our property - since. He's still around the neighborhood but steers clear of us now. A few weeks later we had to repeat this with another neighbor's dog. This is a friendly dog who used to love to come down for a play date with one of our dogs a couple times every week. Since the play time was good for her, we didn't mind but one day the birds were out free-ranging and he grabbed a duck (why is it always the ducks?) and pinned her. I yelled and he dropped her, while DH grabbed the rifle and once again, aimed to be close but not hit. Once again, the dog heard/sensed the bullet whiz by, tucked his tail between his legs and high-tailed it out of there. Once again, he hasn't been back since. I don't know how dogs know, but they do seem to understand that being shot at is not a good thing and in our case, we were able to solve the problem without injury to the dog, or bad feelings with the neighbors. In your case, maybe its worth a try? If it doesn't work with these dogs, your next step is to aim FOR the dog, but it is only the cost of a bullet to try it this way first, right? In either case, when you take aim, just be aware of what is in the background in the direction you are shooting. I am so sorry for the loss of your birds. Is it any consolation that it was one of the older hatchery BR's and not one of your Reese birds?
Josie, I'm so glad to hear he is doing okay. I think about him every day and wonder how he is doing. I know it probably feels to him he made a bad deal right now since he went from total freedom to a small quarantine cage, but I know he'll be happy once he has hens of his own again.
Maidenwolf, good to see you back - I was wondering where you had disappeared to!
Medawinks, I am so sorry to hear of your continuing problems. That is about the lowest thing a person can do - take out their anger or frustrations on an innocent animal. I'd be angry at someone spray painting a fence or throwing a rock through a window but at least those things are repairable - but to maim or kill the neighbor's pets to make your point? I don't understand how someone could do something like that.
Danz, I'm sorry you aren't having better luck with hatching your geese this year. I have nothing to add as I've never kept geese or incubated them myself. I hope you are able to figure it out and they keep laying so you can keep trying.
Mstng67 who is on here built a hoop coop that is in use year-round. Trish44 also uses hers year round, and Danz will too. I built mine primarily as a breeder coop. My plan is to have two but so far I've only built the one. I'm hoping to get started on the next one next week. My original plan was to put the breeding pair of turkeys in one and the 6 ducks in the other. My turkeys did go in the coop for a week when I was out of town as I wanted to ensure their safety. My hen goes into the coop every night to roost but the tom jumps up on the fence of the chicken yard to roost there and every night I have to go and make him get down and go in the coop. With being out of town, I didn't want to come home and find something got him while he slept on the fence, so I locked them both in the hoop coop while I was gone. I let them out when I got back. Meanwhile, I've had several hens go broody so right now the hoop coop is in use as a broody pen. That is a lot of space for a hen to sit under a dog house, on a nest! But, once her chicks hatch, it will be nice they have a place to be safe until they are ready to be let out with the rest of the flock. But that is why I need to get busy building the next hoop coop. I still haven't segregated the ducks and I'm concerned they have a hidden nest somewhere they are laying in, as I don't think I'm getting as many eggs as I should - even with one of them being broody right now. I'd love to get them into a hoop coop where they have no choice but to lay in there and then I can finally figure out how many of them are laying.
I'll be interested to hear how you like the Sweeter heater. I was going to suggest a dehumidifier in the basement but then kept reading and saw that you already had that thought yourself.
That is interesting that the 4H girl noticed you have fewer birds. Do you track your expenditures? I have an Excel Spreadsheet that is awesome (downloaded it - I didn't create it) at tracking everything. You can enter how many birds you have and each day update it with how many eggs you collect. You also add in every time you buy feed, entering both the number of pounds and how much it cost. There is a tab for each month of the year and a summary tab that collates all the data. It tells you your egg laying % - i.e. if you have 20 hens and get 15 eggs, your rate is 75% but it adds it up over the course of each month, and also gives you a yearly average so at the end of the year you can see what the overall was. It also tells you how many pounds of feed you use per egg. While raising chicks, that number can seem high because you have to go through quite a few pounds of feed for the 5 months it takes to grow them out, without getting a single egg. By the time you get that first egg, you might have used 20lb of feed per egg, but it goes down over time as that hen lays 4-5 eggs a week. The spreadsheet also has places to enter other supplies you might purchase, flock purchases, sales of eggs or live birds or hatching eggs, and it gives you a bottom line, of how much money you are making losing.
I've been using the spreadsheet since the get-go, and the first year I actually came out with a monthly income of $2.97. The only thing that doesn't factor in is the eggs we ate, so I suppose it would be fair to say I had a monthly income of $2.97 PLUS free eggs. After that, I did allow it to become a hobby vs. being adamant that the birds pay for themselves, and it has been a monthly loss ever since. I am about to take delivery of a shipment of chicks next week, so the loss will only increase over the next few months. Oh - and I didn't add in the cost of building the coop or my recent Rcom incubator purchase because if I did, it would just be depressing. I justify that by saying that in the event we move, the coop can stay and be used as an outbuilding by the next owner so it increases the value of our property just by being built, and the incubator was a gift because I used my Christmas money to purchase it. Those are my stories and I'm sticking to them
HEChicken, what is the software you're using, I would like to get that to use just for the fun of it. I'm not sure I really want to know how much I'm losing, but it could be useful now that I'm starting to get more pure bred chicks.
YAY for a new roof! So glad they were able to finish it fast! I'm sure they'll be fast with the siding too when they get to it. Glad you are happy with their work.
WELCOME to the group! You'll love this thread! Sounds like you have a pretty good head start on your chicken math.
Just wait.... my bad "month" has not ended with yesterday's loss. ARGH! But yeah, I did think it was hilarious that you were asked why you "had" to get rid of 28 chickens. Just wait until everyone gets to know each other better, and it will all become funnier! hehehe!
I *might* have a hen I'd part with ONLY if you have a super fortress enclosed area and coop for a silkie that would NEVER let her free range. She can NOT see. She is pet quality but stunning looking, but she has one of the biggest crests. I'm keeping her as a pet for now since she can't be out unsupervised and left out in the yard. She needs a secure pen with a top since she won't be able to see flying predators either. She's slow because of how much crest she has. I'm happy to keep her with me forever or send her to a nice secure home where a dog or raccoon or hawk won't kill her. I just have her to sell (and I'm being very picky) and then I do have a couple of silkie roosters too that I'm not being so picky about. :) I have two pet quality roosters and one breeder quality that could be shown, because he's nice enough but in a BIG show-- like Nationals he didn't hold up well, he got 4th place.
Yeah, I NEED the nice weather too. I'm just lifeless over here. I hope your sinus stuff cleras up quickly. I had that a week or two ago and just took decongestant and it cleared up without having to see the Dr. Take pictures of your stall coops! I'm using two horse stalls as coops, too!
I think it's a compliment since it's obvious you are getting more organized and more down to business on what you're breeding! So, that's great! I have no idea why you aren't seeing the reduction in feed, though. Can't wait to hear about how your sweeter heater works! I want to know all about it!
Yeah, I'm with you. Let's just be QUIET with what we're spending on these birds!! Eeeks!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So my month from Heck (being polite here, people) continues.... I went out to the coop and I had TWO DEAD hens!! They had gotten out this morning and got mauled just on the other side of their fence. No blood, and only a few feathers were removed from their backs. Obviously the work of my neighbors two dogs. I did NOT see the dogs do it, but they were in my yard yesterday tracking my hens and I went out there and yelled at them and chased them off. My layers are in a chain link pen, but there has been a hole lately they are squeezing thru in the mornings to hunt for worms in the yard. The dogs dont want to EAT, they want to torment and chase and maim and kill. Well, I've freakin' HAD it with his stinkin' dogs. I called my DH this morning and told him about my two birds-- which by the way, one was a barred rock!!! One of my BEST layers!! The other was a poor Polish-- and those things can't hardly even see to get away. I'm just ANGRY. I'm waffling between getting my gun ready to shoot them when I see them next or going over there and having a chat with the guy to give him the chance to keep his dogs on his property. I'm just ready to shoot, quite frankly. Those dogs are ALWAYS on my property and I've HAD it. I'm sort of tapping my fingers wondering which way to go with this. On the one hand, I can shoot them and drag them out to my tree line. End of story, no one ever knows. On the other, I can talk to him and alert him to my plans... and then have an angry neighbor because he knows I'm going to shoot his d@mn dogs the second I see them on my property again. I need to calm down and think rationally about this. Now.... if this had happened to my silkie flock, there would be NO words... I would be SSS for sure. This guy is just freakin' lucky that it was my layers and I'm not too emotionally wrapped up in them.

I'm so sorry about your hens, that's just the pits. I don't know, I'm kind of in the mindset that you just have to protect your livestock & you have a right to do that. I have only shot a dog once years ago when I lived outside of Derby, but it was threatening me & my family, so it had to go. It may have had something wrong with it & I was terrified it was going to attack me or my son who was small at the time. Since you have had ongoing problems with these dogs & the owner isn't willing to do anything about it I think you have the right to protect your birds, pets, & family. Just take care of it, make sure the dogs aren't ever found & go on. Even though they aren't expensive birds, they still have cost you money & all the time to raise them to get them to laying age & you lost the eggs they would have laid.

It is snowing here like crazy, it has been since I got up & my DH said he got up in the night & it was sleeting. It has gone back & forth between sleeting & snowing big flakes. Right now it's snowing huge flakes, I can't believe it's snowing in April. Are we ever going to have spring? I have so many things I need to go out & do & keep waiting & waiting on this stupid weather. I bought a few pansies, johnny jump ups, & snapdragons last night at the store. They were such cheerful little things, now hopefully it will get nice enough for me to go out & plant them soon.

I'm so excited today, I have 4 brand new Cream Legbar chicks, my first ones to hatch!! I'm not sure yet, but I'm thinking I may have two pair. I really need to keep one pullet since I just lost my hen that had the broken foot. The rooster I kept isn't crested, but I have a hen that is. The rooster I got from Eileen still isn't grown yet & he is going to be bigger than the one I kept. I'm waiting for him to grow out so I can see how he measures up. I'm also waiting on the little pullet to mature some more. She has a different line than I do, so I have two now. Eventually I will have to just keep crested ones as I get some to replace the ones I have since the new SOP calls for crested birds. Most everyone right now is in the same boat, so we all have to work on our breeding stock.

Oh what a bummer. I think the problem with trying to use what others use for incubation is that everyone's location is different. So what "dry" is for one person isn't for another. I think what is more important is measuring the growth of the air cell and weighing the eggs to be sure they are evaporating properly. I usually dry incubate everything because I have had terrible luck with small air cells and late in shell death in everything, ducks, geese, chickens. It has worked for me, in fact my first batch of sebbie eggs last year didn't hatch at all because I ran the humidity too high during incubation and they all suffocated when they pipped their air cells. I was devastated. I only hatched 2 from the second set but it was better than nothing. I am terrible at hatching waterfowl though. The other problem is that sebbie eggs shell density changes dramatically from beginning to end of laying season so what works with one incubation may not work with the next. Also, some "pairs" have weaker genetics and can lead to late shell death too. You may have had beginners luck last year with hatching because I have heard a LOT of people have all these problems and more including myself.

You could sneak out at night and mark/candle your broody goose eggs? Wear gloves! Darn, those girls can pack a good bite even in the dark! I am going to see if my girls will all sit a nest this year for me. It is risky because I don't know what kind of moms they will be. If you let the geese raise them they will be more wary of humans than if you brood them yourself but this year I am ok with the geese raising them for me. I want babies but don't have time with a baby of my own on the way to raise them in a brooder. They are little pigs!
Josie I am glad you posted. I am just heartbroken. I switched my incubating to the dry method for the sebbies. I had 8 fertile and developing eggs due to hatch today. Well since I changed methods they have all died but one. I almost got sick. Nothing else at all changed and I didn't move the eggs, just changed incubator conditions. I had a great hatch last year and this year it's been a bust. The two original I hatched from the old method are doing great and have learned to spill their water and make messes as fast as I can clean them up. They have become very attached to me and yell every time I leave the room.
Had you actually hatched using that method? I just can't figure out what else might have gone wrong. I am very careful not to touch the eggs and kept them and their surroundings fertile. I even had them in a new hatching tray I ordered. I have several more eggs in there and I'm afraid to candle them.
I do have the two girls that went broody and at least 2 more girls out there but I'm not finding eggs. I wonder if the broody girls are collecting the ones the others lay. I did find on newly laid by the the water bucket a couple days ago. One of the other girls is Trudi's curly girl and she definitely should be laying. I have no idea how many eggs the girls have under them. Their nests keep getting higher and higher. It's funny to watch them pick up one piece of straw at a time and carefully tuck it in just the right spot. I've seen them even stand up and turn half way around to be sure it gets tucked just so-so. If they do hatch babies would you recommend letting them raise them or take them and raise them myself?
She has a beautiful head! I would keep her too. It wouldn't be a big deal if I wasn't trying to deal with unpacking the house and work on all these projects to have people here but we have had several months of people here working on s*** and I am over it. The dogs bark all day, even after they leave, because they think someone is coming back. I also have my two barn cats locked in the summer kitchen to bond to the property and we specifically picked the summer kitchen to bond them to as their "home" because it was on the bottom of the list of things that would get fixed. It is the detached building behind the house and the house needs so much work that I figured it wouldn't get worked on for quite a while and would give the cats plenty of time to settle in and feel at home. I just don't see the sense in spending a small fortune on the foundation back there when the house foundation is in desperate need of repair, never mind paint, new upstairs windows, a new back door, rotten wood work replaced etc. In my mind the house should be the main investment of finances and the summer kitchen can wait because if it is falling over can always be removed if we don't have money to repair it. It is so bad that they are talking about having to take it off the foundation, replace the foundation then move the building back. I can't even imagine how much that will cost and we can't even afford to pay someone to paint one room in the house? Ugh. Sorry for the vent!!!!
Josie, great eye!! That is exactly why she is Pet quality-- but not only does she have split wing something terrible, but the ends are twisted and she has a bit of a wry tail. It's not severe, but enough so, that I'm not going to breed her. She's in with the girls right now and happy as a clam. I have no need for her, but don't really HAVE to get rid of her either. Unless someone really wanted to take care of her. These guys just don't eat much, so it's not a big deal to have a few extra hanging around. Glad you found a nice home for your sebbie ganders! I'm sorry about the people hanging around. But if they are going to fix the foundation..?? That would be pretty nice to have done? Maybe you can talk them into painting your baby room, too!

--oh and I forgot, I guess I have TWO pet quality hens! LOL I forgot about Yoda! She has gold leakage on her chin. I can't use her either. But they are great with chicks. She molted out gorgeous, it's such a shame I can't use her either. I have toyed with the idea of selling her to someone who is starting a Blue Partridge project. She'd be great for that.

Thank you. I do know how to load.

I'm still trying to remain calm. And still debating on talking to my neighbor or just doing what I will and be done with it. I don't think he'd offer to pay anyway, I know this guy. I'd rather get rid of his dogs and end the problem. Ive never threatened to shoot them before-- but I know my neighbor down the road with calves certainly has. He'd never suspect me. And even if he did, I have every right, and his dogs have no business being over here. His dogs have a history of chasing people and animals (like horses and cattle) and people all hate his dogs. Still stewing over here.......
I didn't realize they have been causing problems and the owner hasn't done anything. Might be time to take matters into your own hands. I have neighbors who have shot "at or near" dogs and it does scare them badly enough to keep them away. I have heard of something you can load into a shot gun that is non lethal but stings like nothing else that you might be able to use as a deterrent. Such a shame people aren't more responsible, its not the dogs' fault they have a stupid owner. One of our dogs chased a neighbors calf once and I went up an apologized profusely and told him to let me know if he ever saw the dog get loose on his property (he would dig under our fence) and that if the dog was chasing his livestock that I would completely understand if he had to take lethal measures to protect his animals. We then rehomed that dog because he was so much trouble and really didn't belong with our family anyway. I was horrified though when I saw he had gotten out and went looking for him immediately.

HEchicken- He is the funniest rooster. He calls to me after I feed him! Such a sweet boy! Love his chatter to tell everyone he has found a goody!
Hawkeye, I normally am a proponent of trying to talk to the neighbors and work something out but in your situation I know you've had ongoing issues with these dogs and the neighbor is not likely to be interested in doing anything about it, so in this case I'd lean towards taking action instead. I do have one suggestion for something you can try first though. We had several dogs who used to visit here on a regular basis the last half of last year. I didn't mind too much as long as they didn't mess with my birds. One is a Burmese Mtn Dog - I don't know if you know them but they are the size of a GP. Anyway, he used to be here everyday and didn't show any interest in my birds until one day he visited while my ducks were down at my pond and I saw him start chasing them. I won't stand for that. DH was with me and he grabbed his rifle and took aim, deliberately aiming close to the dog but not trying to hit him. He fired and the bullet whizzed right close to the dog who took off like a shot. That was months ago and we haven't seen him - on our property - since. He's still around the neighborhood but steers clear of us now. A few weeks later we had to repeat this with another neighbor's dog. This is a friendly dog who used to love to come down for a play date with one of our dogs a couple times every week. Since the play time was good for her, we didn't mind but one day the birds were out free-ranging and he grabbed a duck (why is it always the ducks?) and pinned her. I yelled and he dropped her, while DH grabbed the rifle and once again, aimed to be close but not hit. Once again, the dog heard/sensed the bullet whiz by, tucked his tail between his legs and high-tailed it out of there. Once again, he hasn't been back since. I don't know how dogs know, but they do seem to understand that being shot at is not a good thing and in our case, we were able to solve the problem without injury to the dog, or bad feelings with the neighbors.
