Since when is 16 feet not 16 feet? I bought a tarp to use that was 12' X 16'. However there is no way it is 16' because it is lacking at least 2 feet on one side.


Today. Built the inside door to the coop part with the chicken door in the man door.

This looks crooked but it really isn't. I was just trying to show the floor I built inside the house part. I put netting over the entire outside so even if the tarp blows off it will still be secure.

are there others here that have photo's that i could show a carpenter.. or parts list??
it would help being 25 mi from town.. to go and fetch stuff..

Thanks.. and Danz.. that is really great! I can see an advantage on the floor surface here but I want to ask.. what you wanted it for.. is it just the rainy season.. or more?

This will be our first year at gardening and I'm very excited to get started. When do you all start planting? I've read its best around end of April. My hubby bought me my first compost bin yesterday and we set it up today but i think I'm going to need something bigger

We start from seeds so we already have seedlings growing in simple greenhouse boxes outside for 4 weeks (seriously, just a tote box with a pane of clear glass laid over the top). This weekend will be tilling the garden area while it is warm. (totally thinking about letting chickens do it for us...)

We always plant based more on what the extended 2 week forecast says then a set rule. I heard that tuesday night might drop to a low of 25 though, so I think we are going to maybe try and do it wendsday or later. After that it looks to stay above 40 even at night for two weeks (so far).

For your first garden, it cant hurt to wait though. Nothing worse then starting out and being disappointed before you get to enjoy it really. Maybe start some seeds inside, till the garden and even do a test watering to make sure you dont have a hose with leaks or some other issue.

Hawkeye-I keep forgetting to ask you about stripping cloth diapers? All the ones I have look very clean so I was just going to wash them all for now since I have no way to know if they are having absorbency issues until I use them....

Anyway, I have read tons of conflicting stuff. Some say to use Bleach, Dawn, baking soda, vinegar...ugh, the list goes on and on. Most of the manufacturers warn not to use any of these items?!? Is there a good source you could recommend if I do need to strip.

Also, on prepping brand new diapers, how many washes do you recommend and what water temp?

HEchicken-If you have time snap a few pics of your barred rocks, I am curious what the humped back looks like? Is it their cushion area, like on an orp? Just curious...

I haven't caught up on posts. I just have a really sick feeling and I need to get it off my chest. Fluff and Cloud were out for a run South of the house this morning when this lady was here picking up the last pup that I held for her. While they were gone I heard two gunshots. Fluff showed back up withing maybe 15 minutes but I haven't seen Cloud since. I am really thinking someone shot my dog. Here's the thing. The person who farms that land is one of my best friends. He would never do it. However there are some people across the section that might. I am waiting for DH to get home so we can take the truck and see if we can find her.
I so hope I am wrong. I feel sick to my stomach thinking about it and if someone really did shoot her I don't think I will be able to contain my anger. Please pray that I am wrong!!

josie good to see you. Im no expert at cloth sense i stuck with the simple flats and pul covers or fleece covers. But i use regular tide with all my diapers and never had a problem i also would bleach once a month and never had any stinky issues. It depends on the new ones what fabric they use i know some have to washed a few times at first

Oh my gosh....... I so hope that the shots just scared Cloud and she is hiding somewhere. I will be watching for a post or e-mail with an update! I so hope she is ok!

I'll see if I can hunt down the stripping method. Do NOT use bleach! Dawn is totally safe, but it is going to bubbly like crazy. Really, all you need to do is do a hot wash, throw in a box of baking soda, vinegar and you're good to go! That will strip it well. I would do one more wash after that.

OKay, so now I'm upset about my barred rocks. I went over to the Good Shephard thread where everyone is talking about their Frank birds and posted pictures of the two birds I'm not happy with-- the one with the really crappy barring and the one with the gold in the neck.


I got this response:

The ones with gold are not pure bred. The are likely sex links.
The ones with "blurry" barring are also not pure breds.

PS - all of your pictures are males.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, I didn't make notes when my GSBRs were growing, but I believe at 6 weeks of age the GSBRs are not feathered out that completely. The good ones take forever to feather in. I concur with Kathyinmo that something must be mixed in those birds.

So now what??? Apparently, Frank didn't give me pure bred Barred Rocks!!?! They said these look nothing like the heritage rocks that they should and I'm guessing that these guys are about 6 weeks old and they said they should not be that well feathered in! So there goes all of my hopes for breeding a nice group of barred rocks! ARGH!!! Totally bummed.
