I've had pretty good luck raising turkey poults. I just put them in with baby chicks and they learn how to eat and drink from the chicks. I hatched a couple more day before yesterday. I've had lots of eggs that weren't fertile in the first ones I collected. I hope in time that gets better.

Were these young turkeys that the eggs weren't fertile for? Mine are the same age as HEChicken's since she got her hen from me, so this is all of their first laying season. I haven't tried to candle any of my turkey eggs yet, I need to check my records & see where I'm at on the first ones I put in the incubator.

These are all first year laying hens in all my breeds. Several of my eggs weren't fertile. Part of that is I think I had too many Toms for a while. Things seem to be fairly settled now. The blues and reds haven't been laying long enough to have any poults hatch. I did see some fertile eggs when I was candling the other day though.
I have a huge number of chicks in my bins right now. I am going to have to make some more room somewhere. The brooder is full of older birds that need a home so the chicks have to stay in here.
I also hatched another Sebbie last night so I have 6 of them now. I sure will be glad to see the weather settle so I can get these guys out of here. The two older ones are imprinted on me and if I open the cage door they run after me. They are so cute but they are so messy!!!
I put them all together in a big cage last night but the big ones started picking up a baby and throwing it around last night so I had to separate them again. Seems I get one cage of birds out of here and gain two.
I gave the peahen that laid an egg a nice big pile of straw yesterday and was glad to see her making a nest last evening. I can't keep straw in anywhere. It is always getting spread around and played in.

I went out in the field.... I sat in the grass on the ground... the 2 dogs came over and laid down right at my legs and feet... cats were running around and chasing/playing with each other.. about 20 chickens were foraging and picking bugs and grass... ducks and geese were right beside me in their fenced area picking at weeds.. the guineas were running around being crazy guineas... what a great peaceful time that was. I sat out there about 30 minutes and just enjoyed everything I've worked to maintain. Loving this life and glad I remember to stop and enjoy it on a regular basis!

Sorry Casper I don't have contact Checoukan. She would probably know if anyone does in your area.
I went out to feed the geese and saw one of the broodies picking on an egg. I thought perhaps it broke and she was eating it. To my surpise she only had the one egg under her and she had hatched a little sebbie. It was all out of the shell except it's middle part. It is another gray saddleback. I have it drying in the hatcher right now. The other broody sebbie had 3 eggs under her. All three are fertile and look close to hatching. I put them in the incubator. I gave the girls some duck eggs but I think they have both gotten off their nests now. I suppose it would be too much to wish they'd lay some more.
I also got my second peafowl egg today. I love spring!!

PROBLEM,
I have 11 chickens, 9 buff orps and I think the other 2 are leghorns. Anyway one of the leghorns is getting picked on by the rest of the flock,, not really any 1 or 2 culprits but ALL of the others, the poor thing now has a bald and bloody butt as well as blood spots on its wings, this chook looks like a roo but since I have never had orps or leghorns I cant really tell what it is. As of yesterday I separate it during the day and only put it in with the rest of them at night, I would cull it since it is the only one that has the problem but the silly thing now comes up to me and jumps in my hands, cannot bring myself to do it. thanks for any replies, I did a search but none of the results seemed to fit my particular problem.

Separate the bird if you can from the rest of the flock until it's wounds heal and it gets it's feathers back. If you have room to do it I would put a cage for it in with the other birds. That would make transition back to the flock a lot easier. Even if it is separated they will be used to it being around so it won't be as likely to get picked on when it is back to normal. I know it would be hard to do especially since it has become your buddy. .....but that is what I would do. Treat the wounds with an antiseptic.

Thanks chicken danz, I need to gather some more materials to make a small box and enclosed run for it, may just bring it into the house till I get enough to do it.
Never thought I would have a chicken as a buddy, my Grandfather always taught me never get attached to your livestock.

I never in a million years would have thought chickens could have personalities too! I am amazed with each new chick that joins our family.. I'm very attached to my chickens and love watching their antics! I have one little EE girl that jumps in my car - without fail - every single time I open the door... I just go ahead and let her and then put her on the ground and she's off on her way
