Consolidated Kansas

So I go to close up the coop for the night and as always I stick my head in to make sure all the birds are accounted for. Panic ensued as I counted 3 fewer than normal!!!! Then I saw this:

Panic averted! Pictured starting from the left are Sesame (Amerucana), Ginger (Prod Red) and Curry (Buff Brahma Bantam). I swear they do the craziest things!

In other news I have a hen one her last leg, literally! She is still eating and drinking, but she has lost significant muscle mass. All I can fee is bones in her chest. Her breast muscle is all but gone. My vet neighbor is coming over tomorrow night to put her down. I just can't bring myself to wring the birds neck. Such is the life of a chicken owner.

Finally, chick math has kicked in again. I went to the Orschlen's in Basehor this afternoon. I must say I am really impressed! BIG store. They had a nice selection of chicks and an employee there named Amy was awesome in her chicken knowledge! I must say I will go back in the coming years. Heck it is even 6 or 7 miles closer than the Lawrence store. Anyways, back to the math. I picked an Australorp, DD pick a light tan Amerucana and DS pick a black and brown Amerucana. Spicy names are inbound as well as pictures.

Have a good night all!

Pikeman - Nice pic of your chickens there. I was just coming into the thread to take a quick glance before heading back to work. Pictures are a lot easier to see and understand than reading words. LOL.

Pikeman, I love your pic of the hens, that's really cute. I hope you're doing better with your health, I meant to respond to your earlier post & got busy & forgot. It does sound like chicken math struck you again, congrats on the new chickies.

bbsnooks, congrats on your new chicks also, post some pics when you get a chance after you get them all settled in.

Well we were busy yesterday, we went to Lowe's & got all the wood for the 2nd hoop coop & came home & got started on it. We got all the panels hooked on & got the frame all screwed on, but ran out of daylight. I'm hoping to be able to work on it again tomorrow to get some supports put in. I'm glad to be working on it at least & making progress. We're building it right next to the other one, so that will be convenient to get to it. The guineas were checking it out today to see what we were putting there.

I let all 3 of the little pullets that were in the small grow-out pen in the run out to run around & range with the rest of my laying flock & they're doing great. They're even learning about going into the coop at night, so I'm really pleased about that. My flock is doing great & they're really happy to have green grass & things to eat outside now. In fact they have really cut back on the feed they're eating due to finding more to eat out there. I put the 3 little blue blaced Barnevelders in the pen where the other pullets had been & they're doing well. I got some pics of them I'll post. I don't think you can really tell the blue lacing that well yet, they're pretty young still. I'm sure it will get more pronounced as they grow.

Finally here are the Barnevelder chicks:

They're kind of shy, so they ran to the other end of the pen when I tried to take their pic at first. You can see the rooster is the one in the middle, that's pretty apparent even at 6 weeks.

Here you can kind of see the lacing a little better.

Trish - Really love the pics of your birds. They look awesome.

Gotta pop in to say a quick hi to everyone

. Tax day is finally here. The server is maxed out to say the least. I was quite nervous monitoring all the activities just to make sure files are transmitted flawlessly. No telling how mad customers will be if we drop their returns.

The server actually was busier than ever last Friday. Just to give you a general idea - we had 3.7 million Individual Federal returns transmitted and many more waiting. That's just for Individual FD, not counting the States and other types of returns (Business and specialty returns such as Exempt). The next 5 days will be the busy "perfection days" where we make sure all returns are transmitted and the ones are not will be reviewed and retransmitted. Once the perfection days are over, I'll get to hang out in this forum more often again and catch up on all the threads I missed. Woot!!!

Trish the barnvelders are really pretty. I can see the blue lacing underneath. I have some brahmas that started out like that and turned out really pretty.
My flock is doing great as well. They seem healthy and thriving. I'm very pleased that none of that virus went beyond that one pen.

Kuan I don't envy you at all. I did my federal taxes on Sat and filed the state yesterday. They went through flawlessly. We all depend on people like you so much.
Gotta go out and move birds around today so I have a place to put the new ducks. It's a little chilly so I'm not wanting to get out there so bad.

Anyone ever raise/eat chuckars? A dear friend is giving me some when they hatch in a few more weeks! I'm all for free meat in my freezer :)

Between broilers (55 of them this year), chuckars (possibly 20), fish (I hope the lake cooperates!), pig (1 feeder pig coming in July)- I'll be set for a year or more... plus all the gardening we're getting ready to do. Ground is disced and fenced!

It sounds like you got a lot done. I'm really dismayed to hear about the freezing temps again later this week (hey, can someone tell the weather April 15th is the frost date for this area? Please?) because I just bought a bunch of seedlings today that I was planning on planting tomorrow. Grrr. I don't normally do seedlings but didn't get seeds started this year so thought I'd get a jump start on them and get the seedlings. I guess I can either wait to plant them until after the freeze, or put 2-liter bottles over the top of them to protect them. At least they are still small enough for that.

My husband and I planted 2 apple trees and a peach tree yesterday evening, just in time for it to get cold later this week. :) We haven't even started our garden inside yet. Our frost date isn't until mid-May. However, things are so dry here that I'm seriously hoping we get rain, snow, SOMETHING or we're going to have a lot of work on our hands to get anything out of a garden - or to even keep our trees and grass alive. The grass here has started to turn green, but my geese have been mowing off the little that is green. I hope they don't manage to kill it before we get some actual moisture!

Yay for tax season drawing to a close yet again. I don't get paid to work in the industry but each year file about 10 returns between our business, and personal for a couple of family members and by the end of it my brain is fried. I'm not surprised about Friday being so busy. I wanted them done before bed on Friday too, so I could relax and enjoy my weekend without them hanging over me. I thought I was done on Wednesday and was feeling so good about it and then Thursday I realized there were still two I hadn't done. So I had to work on those, and since they weren't eligible for e-File, I got them in the mail on Saturday. Very good feeling.

Anyway, we will be glad to see more of you

Yeah, I hear you. My little seedlings are still sitting her on my kitchen counter, lost in my indecision. It's sure getting colder out there and I don't want to shock them by planting them so I'll probably wait until after this next cold snap. My weather forecast this morning contained that dreaded four letter word again. [Snow].

Trish, those barnevelders are very attractive birds - I can see why you wanted them. Good job on making a start on your next hoop coop too - it sounds like you made good progress. I have yet to start mine, but time may be running out for me. Last night one of my ducks was missing when bedtime came. I searched high and low for her, walking down to our pond by flashlight, searching the coop multiple times (she gets on the roosts with the chickens so it can be hard to see her in the mix of bodies). But - she was gone. In the middle of the night I awoke and had the thought that she might have flown up to sleep on the horse shelter like she used to last summer. Feeling relieved, I went back to sleep but this morning the others were eating and drinking and she wasn't with them. Mid-morning I went back down there and there she was - eating out of the feeder like nothing happened. I asked her "Now where have you been, young lady?" but she declined to answer and exited the coop to avoid further questioning. I fear that she is working on a nest somewhere, so I think I need to get her locked up sooner rather than later.

My silkie is doing a great job mothering her adopted chicks. They are out and about quite a bit today despite the colder temperatures, never going far from her but enjoying exploring.

I'm not thrilled about the upcoming weather, either. Even more of my stuff will be just big enough to die, probably!

I've eaten chuckar. DH and a friend got some. It must have been 5 or 6 years ago. I can't remember a thing about how it tasted, so it must not have been too gamy or odd.

I want another pig, and I'd like a lamb. Right now I've got so much in my freezer I'd have to buy another to fit anything more!

Thanks cherwill :) I'm anxious to try something new. My farmer friend asks me if I wanted to raise a pig with her this summer. She has 5 right now that are about ready to go to locker and she'll get 5 more in July and 1 for me! This will be very new for me. My BF is picking up the panels this week so we can start the fence... then a simple shelter and that's it.. exciting :)

I would like black or gray giants but any would do and when I find some ill let ya all know we're to go and ill post pics we have a baker that has requested the eggs!? I know for large birds they are descent layers what I didn't know is that the eggs are sought after in baking circles? Never heard that one before but for 4 bucks a dozen I'm in lol! My mom will be getting some from me as well she wants some giants bad

Hey all I've just recently joined the group and the world of urban chickening (is that a word?). I live within the city limits of McPherson and so have pullets which is fine since our desire for his project has been for eggs and experiences for the kids. I have 6 red-sexed pullets, 1 barred rock pullet, and one mystery bird.

I posted in the "What Breed Is It?" forum to get help in identifying the mystery bird. So far it seems to be an Easter Egger or an Ameraucuna. Now the gender is a big question that will be obviously resolved in a few weeks.

Anyways nice to 'meet' you and see ya around the backyard.

Martin
