We made that move last year and have no regrets. I'm looking forward to hearing your progress as you move (hard work) and settle in to the new place. What are you going to do with the acreage (aside from tend your chicken math)?

Planning a web site already; "Rooster & Babs build a Farm" lol

Shannon AAKA "Babs" - The GF, wants a green house. Planning on a little "Country MArket" out front where she can sell fresh Veggies, fruits, flowers, eggs & Home made goodies. Just going to start small, me with Chickens and her with plants and trees and see where we grow from there? Planning a small orchard , some ducks on the pond.
I'm going to have a few goats also, I want to raised San Clemente Island Goats, a rare breed.
I race Lawn Mowers and collect/restore antique garden tractors, so I'll have room to play with them as well!

If you are every in the market for Kiko goats let me know! We are going full time our selves into Commercial farming next fall. It started as a hobby and now I cant set behind this desk any longer I Love it! I wish you luck out there and if you ever have questions about your goats let me know Im glad to help

Did you all know that crows will take chicken eggs. My mom has a flock that free ranges and her hens lay anywhere she has given them next boxes but the girls will not use them. So anyway she saw two crows take keeps over the weekend. I didn't know they would do that

just wanted to share

Sounds like a dream! I just remembered that I forgot to take pictures of my rooster for you.

You race lawn mowers!! I need to tell my husband this one. He has started to accumulate toys for our yard and fixed them up ( two lawn mower tractors, a go cart and now a 4 wheeler ).

My ten year old though ran over the spicket we had in the middle of our front yard last week with the go cart. It is off the water main, so we had a water fountain in the middle of the yard. Looked like something out of a cartoon, Boy, my husband was not happy.

I have new neighbors down the street that just moved onto acreage with a huge outbuilding. I went to see them last week, he has already filled it with some beautiful antique tractors. He said he is getting addicted to them. He must have had at least 5 of them.

Anybody's dogs or cats act strangely last night?

I have two golden retrievers who can sense earthquakes. One of them started about 9 last night jumping on me, like she wanted me to pick her up. Very unusual for her. Then she hid in the basement in the dark by herself, also very unusual for a golden who always wants to be with their people. I had to pull her upstairs, she was just very needy all night.

Then this morning, my Maine Coon Cat who is afraid to leave the second floor was hiding in my closet on the first floor. When I came near the closet, she started crying.

Found out their were six earthquakes in Oklahoma last night. We are at least 4 hours from there, but last year when they had them, both dogs woke me up at the time they occurred. They have also reacted to another one. I should have known, I thought maybe she was in pain or something.

Our dogs were going nuts last night!

I've never heard that. I like having crows around because crows will chase off hawks. Incidentally, if your mom is interested in training her hens to lay in the nest boxes, her best bet is to lock them in the coop for a couple of weeks. Once they are retrained to the nest boxes, she can let them out again and hopefully they will continue to return to the coop to lay their eggs - makes collection a lot easier. My compromise is a large chicken "yard" that they are in until about mid-afternoon. Around 3pm everyday, I open the gate and let them out to free-range the rest of the day. I've found that this set up encourages them to lay their eggs in the coop. I've even seen hens who were out free-ranging, return to the coop to lay a late-in-the-day egg. On Sunday my turkey hen was wandering around, vocalizing constantly. She even walked all the way across our front porch, talking non-stop. DH asked me what was wrong with her, and I told him I thought she was looking for a place to lay her egg. In the end though, I watched her walk all the way back down to the yard, go into the coop, and a short time later, there was her egg. I guess in the end she decided that is the safest place for her offspring after all.

One of my neighbors spends what sounds like most of every weekend 4-wheelin' on their property. On Sunday I got my (riding) mower out and mowed most of our front (about 2 acres). So there neighbors - I can go 4-wheelin' too

Hey all I've just recently joined the group and the world of urban chickening (is that a word?). I live within the city limits of McPherson and so have pullets which is fine since our desire for his project has been for eggs and experiences for the kids. I have 6 red-sexed pullets, 1 barred rock pullet, and one mystery bird.

I posted in the "What Breed Is It?" forum to get help in identifying the mystery bird. So far it seems to be an Easter Egger or an Ameraucuna. Now the gender is a big question that will be obviously resolved in a few weeks.

Anyways nice to 'meet' you and see ya around the backyard.

Martin

Welcome! It's nice to see someone else from McPherson.

You'll have a great time with it; be sure to post a link to your blog.

I do some speed mowing sometimes, but it never occurred to me to race. I'd probably break my leg.

I guess I'm to far away; I didn't feel anything and my dogs didn't act any stranger than usual. When I lived in California, our dog would go from room to room warning us all that an earthquake was a'comin'. He'd wake us up in the middle of the night if necessary.
