Consolidated Kansas

Kimberlydm, I feel your pain. What city are you in? I know that some cities in Kansas do allow small numbers of hens - perhaps we can help you figure a way around this if we can narrow it down to that?

Kimberlydm I am so sorry that you are having to go through all of this. I hope that it all works out. It looks like if you called and checked on it that they would not fine you.

I feel so bad for all of you having to deal with so much rain. We are lucky here in NC KS and have had just enough rain. We actually could use a nice shower soon.

We got everyone moved in and settled into their new home. Everyone seems to be enjoying it. I love the poop boards that DH and I built. Some of you were concerned about ventilation but I think we are good. I have fansin the windows and they are really keeping the air moving. If we need to we might put a exhaust fan in the loft. I will try to post pictures.

Are the mosquitos horrible over there with all the rain? I had to spray myself last night to see at the computer since its back the back door :/ YUCK

YES! I cover myself in my homemade mosquito repellent even if I'm only going outside for 2 minutes. It's not quite as effective as it was earlier, because there are just so many mosquitoes. I've lost track of how many I've killed in the house.

Has anyone been through this or can offer any suggestions?

I'm sorry to hear about all you're going through. I have some chronic pain and autoimmune issues, so I know how exhausting it can be at times. In fact, quite a few of us here do. I think we're kind of drawn to keeping animals or something. My animals and garden are my therapy. I hope your neighbors won't have any objection to the hens, especially if you can alleviate their concerns about smell and noise. I think it's a good sign that the only animal complaint was the dog; no one turned you in for keeping chickens, so it probably doesn't bother your neighbors.

It looks great; I'm sure they'll be very happy!

PIKEMAN94 , welcome back good to see you!

Zigzag , I'm no chicken professor but, I think most chickens really fly like that while they are young and before they get heavy ( unless their one of those breeds that really do fly well ) You would probably only have to clip their wings once . If they are safe in your yard and locked up at night, clipping their wings would keep them from flying into an unsafe yard.

CHERWILL, I'm with you I wish it could be October and November all year. Cooking and yard work and the kids in school,

and bonfires with hot drinks and no bugs ahhhhhh ........

MAIDENWOLF, I wish I knew more about bumble foot too ,or staph for that matter. My son is a child with special needs and has had a lot of health issues and he gets it every so often. SO frustrating!
I feel like its always a struggle to get his immune system going so I can keep him from having to take antibiotics, and then something happens where I don't have any choice and haveto do antibiotics anyway and then I have to deal with yeast and start all over with the probiotics and all the other supplements that he takes and it just never ends .
I have a hen out there that has a small one on each foot I don't know how long she's had it cuz I haven't had her that long . She isn't lame and is laying well so, I'm not sure what to do. I wish there was a way to just inject the bumble with something that would zap it and take care of it.

Kimberlydm, First you need to get a copy of the ordinance and read exactly what it says. Then let us know if letters or emails (if you can provide an email address for the city manager, city council, or person who would be in charge of this.) can help your cause.
Chickens are wonderful therapy. The whole point is to not to give up. See if a friend or someone who lives outside the city limits could possibly take them for a short while while you settle the problem or get a permit. Did you happen to get the name of whom you talked to when you called the first time?
So many of us have physical issues that cause ongoing pain. I know it seems hopeless and I can't imagine loosing my eyesight. My Dad has fought a myelitis for several years which is very similar but is a brain infection. He has to be on steroids all the time. They do SED rate tests on him to raise or lower the amount of steroids. He went from totally invalid to doing well after he got on the right medication. Unfortunately now he has other health issues which are far worse. The point is that with the right medications you will be amazed at how much better you do.
Pikeman good to see you back on here. I thought maybe you had forgotten us. Glad to hear the Marans is laying well. I don't have any at all any more.
Maidenwolf do you have stickers of some kind in your yard? They can contribute to bubble foot. I worry about my chickens getting a foot rot or something in all this water. You can't escape it.
It rained here all day yesterday. It was supposed to clear out by noon. It wasn't necessarily a rain after noon or so but it sprinkled and was cloudy all day.
I spent the entire day cleaning and cooking. I was still mopping at 10PM last night. Of course now I have new messes to clean up this morning before my company gets here. It will be an atrocious mess before the day is over cause there is no dry spots to walk outside.
My brother and his wife are coming from N. Carolina to visit my Dad before he passes away. They will be here for several days which means after my children's families visit today I need to get it cleaned up again for my brother.
I honestly can't imagine having to clean every day. I would so much rather be out taking care of the birds.
I got DH to go get feed for me, but I still had to go to town to take eggs in, pick up some scripts and make a short visit with my Dad.
I honestly haven't noticed mosquitoes for about 3 years. First the drought had them under control. I have noticed wigglers in any sitting water but I try to dump it all. I always dump and renew all the water for the birds every day so that helps as well. I think the birds do a good job of keeping the population down. However with all the rain there is water sitting all around us and I'm afraid it won't last.

Bumblefoot and other foot issues:

I am spraying everyone's feet with Vetericyn at bedtime. I don't know if it will help, but I am convinced that it cured bumblefoot on a couple of chickens 2 years ago.

Speaking of Vetericyn, I have a kitten with a problem with her foot. When we found her on a straw bale in the chicken run, she was walking on the side of her leg. After a week with a splint, she started walking on the pad. Then a few days later, she started walking on the side of the foot again. I examined it and it was hot and swollen, so back to the vet for antibiotics. Better for a while, then started favoring the foot again. On Wednesday it was swollen again, so I sprayed it with Vetericyn (the gel stuff for wounds). The next morning it was waay different. It had lost the swelling but looked red and sore. I hit it with some triple antibiotic cream (she flinched, so it hurt), and the Vetericyn a couple of times through the day. Apparently there was some sort of abscess that drained. It appears to be healing, but there is a sizable concave spot on the pad of her foot. I'm really hoping we can get this under control. It has been one problem after another with that foot. She is a very personable kitten and has ingratiated herself with all 4 of our dogs and our grouchy older cat, so of course she is part of the family.

The stuff isn't cheap, but it seems to work with lots of problems.

Disclaimer: No connection to Bluestem or Vetericyn except as a satisifed customer.

I was just told 2 weeks ago that I have a "autoimmune arthritis" possibly Psoriatic arthritis, the blood work could not pin point a certiain condition. I will be starting on Hydroxychlorquine and Methotrexate next week :/ super nervous! It's good to know there is one more thing in common here!

Since I don't actually have my chickens yet I am not sure what advice I could give either, so sorry you are dealing with this Kimberlydm

That's a very cute coop, congrats! Now on to the chicken math!

I have autoimmune problems as well. I have had a lot of testing over the years & besides Osteoarthritis which is bad in my knees & hands my Rheumatologist thinks I have another condition he can't pinpoint. It's been elusive, but he says often they can't diagnose something unfortunately until you have something serious come up. I have a lot of inflammation in my body, it shows up on the tests, but the rest is inconclusive as of yet. At first it was thought I have Lupus, but after the first time that has been negative, so why it was first positive who knows. I was put on the same drugs you have listed above & didn't see any improvement & in fact had side effects from the Methotrexate & had to stop taking it. Make sure you get your eyes checked often on the Hyroxychloroquine if your Dr. didn't tell you that. They have to dilate your eyes to check them.

We're not supposed to have rain this weekend thank goodness, but it still looks cloudy out there. I just hope the water gets a chance to soak in some before it rains again on Monday. I did lose one little Cream Legbar pullet I had been growing out yesterday due to her being so wet, that was sad because I really wanted her to make it. I hope I don't lose any more due to this darned water.

kimberlydm, I'm so sorry you're having these problems when you don't need any more. I think the others have given you some good advice, I wish you luck with getting it all settled & hope you can keep your chickens.
