Consolidated Kansas

It sure was slick out. Of course I had to go out to get the last minute Christmas gifts. I drove slowwwww out there. It was icy and 2 hours of shopping was enough for me.

One of the lavender orp. chicks i got from Danz was unable to walk. I isolated her and started giving her a vitamin E softgel twice a day. Today is the 4th day and she is finally able to stand and walk a few steps. I'm so happy to see that she is feeling better.

I just looked outside and saw the GPs were out playing in the snow! They sure are enjoying the weather. Then they laid down next to the house to rest... snow just piled up on their coat! I'm cold for them but sure didn't bother them the least bit. :D

Stay warm everyone!

We got sleet, then freezing rain, then sleet, then more freezing rain. It's an ice rink here. DH offered to go feed and water my birds. I sure appreciated that. Maybe he didn't want a repeat of yesterday with my anger at the hoses. I spent the day cleaning and starting to wrap gifts. I only got one room cleaned but that was a start I guess. I did move some furniture in the dining room. The heat vent has always been behind a big buffet thing. So I moved it to the other side of the room and moved a china cabinet there. I remember why I put them where they were. I was afraid of the curved glass of the china hutch getting broken. So if that happens, I guess I'll never forgive myself since it is over 100 year old antique. Replacing that glass would be impossible.
I have a load of stuff I need to get moved to my storage sea van but I guess I really didn't want to fall getting out there. The only time I was out was to go take care of the brooder house. I lost one chick but I don't think that is extremely bad considering the change in weather.
I do wish those presents were all wrapped. That would help a lot. I used a couple gift bags, but some stuff is just things that won't work in gift bags, so I have several boxes to wrap.
Tweety that's great the chick is doing better. I hope she recovers fully.
Well my cats don't lay on the GPs but the chickens certainly do. They have no problem at all popping up on one of the dogs and taking a nap. The dogs don't seem to mind either.

Snow blew into my hoop coop! What should I do? I use deep litter straw. I am going to try to scoop out amuch as I can. No heat in coop, so I don't want them to get wet. I hope they are ok. Evil cold temps are coming soon!

I agree with ChickenCanoe, however if they have no place to get off the ground and you can come up with a couple of pallets for them to stand or sit on that would get them off the ground. If they have roosts they should be fine anyway. I have birds out running around in the snow this morning. Not a lot, but a few.
We didn't get that much snow. Mostly ice. Most of the snow came down during the night. I am afraid I've got to get out there and take down all the shade cloth and stuff I have up over the netting. If that is covered in ice it will be too heavy. That won't be a fun chore. If we had dry snow it would just blow off but I doubt the ice stayed off. I'm afraid to go look. I really don't look forward to being out there in the cold.
I think it is in the morning the forecast was for -1 here. Miserable. I didn't see what the expect the chill index to be.

I was watching the Weather Chanel forecast for January, and it is predicting warmer weather for our part of the world. I don't know if they meant warmer than normal for January, or just warmer than December. It wouldn't have to increase much to be warmer than December!

Hey I was wondering what you guys thought about my silkie/d'ullce. We have had it a month now, the previous owner was not sure about the age but said it was a pullet.

This is when we got it:

And this is now, the comb has changed alot since then, and I do not know a lot about this breed!

The black one we have does not have a comb like this that I Have seen!

Cute bird Ash, but I don't know anything about that breed, maybe Danz can weigh in on it.

We got mostly ice here too, I was hoping we would get enough snow to cover up the ice so we had something to walk on besides ice, but we only got a dusting of snow. Our satellite went out yesterday afternoon about the time I was finishing up with chores & my DH went out to try to clean some ice off the dish. He said he broke some kind of cover out there, so I'm sure that will have to be replaced. He also messed up the direction of the dish so he had to keep going back out there & readjusting & finally it came back on when he reset the hopper. I was about ready to dig out the old movies for the night because he was already bored to tears stuck in here so without TV it wasn't going to be a fun evening.

We've got some really cold nights coming up, I sure hope my birds will be OK out there in the outdoor pens. The ones I really worry about are the young ones in the growout pen. I did turn the heat lamp back on for them in case the smaller ones need it. The bigger ones are getting up on the board I put across for them in there, so they can snuggle together & sleep on their feet, but there are some smaller ones that can't get up there yet. Hopefully with the added bedding I gave them they will be OK. It's supposed to slightly warm up some starting Tuesday to above freezing during the day. I've got to go out in a bit & melt ice again in the bowls at the breeder coop. That's where the ones start that don't have heated waterers.

Try to stay warm everyone!

I sure hope they are right!

I would say a pullet but I'm not good at guessing age.

We were in the city last night visiting relatives and were surprised to come out of their house and find 4-5" of snow had fallen while we were there. But then we got home and found there wasn't much here. It was still falling but when I woke up this morning we still had maybe 1.5" snow total, on top of the ice that feel most of the afternoon yesterday.

I still cannot even get into the feed room side of my coop - it is a sheet of ice and the door is frozen shut. I'm so glad I put an internal door from the coop to the feed room so I was able to access it from the inside to get everyone fed.

I was really pleased to see the sheep and goats starting to munch away on their hay wall. Until yesterday they seemed to prefer to graze but with ice and now snow covering the pasture, they're relying on the hay at last.

She is cute Ash, my two cents , I think girl still . Our little d'uclle has a pretty big red comb for such a little bird , but she's still all girl. I think those silkies have kind of odd dark purple ish knobby combs, and then when you cross them out with another breed the comb could end up looking really different . Here's ours when she was about 8 months old .
