Meeeee, too! I'm in the club!!

Hope everyone has a chance to get out in the nice weather today before the windy cold gets here again. I'm going to try to figure out a way to better house the pea pair in the one appropriately covered pen- there's not a large house in there, and these two are used to roosting 60 feet up a tree in the woods. I think I'll raise the net and let them roost on top of the South America house for now.

My mother-in-law and I joke that we're too closely related because we are both klutzy and usually in the same way (we trip over similar things and tend to do similar dumb stuff). I'm always telling my husband "you shouldn't leave <x> here because I'll hurt myself on it somehow". Maybe you, me and Trish44 should start a klutz klub. lol
LOL I agree!!! When my parents were alive they used to laugh how I fell more than them...and they fell a lot.
You aren't the only one. I've had people contacting me recently wanting to know when I'll have chicks, and I've been looking for those special ones I still covet!!! I really need a better tracking system to know who has asked. 99% of my inquiries don't result in sales though. I think a lot of people just dream and have no intent to buy anything. Not you 22qZoo. I know you are a serious buyer.
Of course everyone is looking for an ultimate bargain. Like a $200 bird for $5. I got tired of taking pictures for a guy yesterday. He was looking for a rooster for his English orps. I finally just told him I'd have to check further. My camera has a 2 second delay that won't reprogram like it should. Getting a decent picture of a chicken is time consuming. They NEVER hold still for 2 seconds. I hadn't advertised any. He just contacted me on a forum. I haven't even considered selling any of them so far.

OK, So life has been absolutely crazy. I've been running hard all week and haven't gotten much of anything done, except maybe to fall farther behind. :lau :barnie Somewhere on here, someone asked me if my ducks/geese are laying. As far as I'm aware, they are not - not unless they're hiding their eggs in an as-of-yet-undiscovered nest, which is highly possible. We got 1/2 inch of snow a couple days ago, and the birds haven't been out of their pen since, choosing instead to hang out in the straw that isn't covered my snow (under the duck house). Baby E is doing well and is growing like a weed. He will be 12 weeks old this Sunday. It's hard to believe it's been 12 weeks already! He has become much more aware of his surroundings and gets bored being in one spot for too long, so I have to rotate him between his bouncy chair, his swing, and his play mat while I am working. He loves to play "peek-a-boo" and have his nosed "beeped". He also loves it when someone folds laundry near him - for some reason he really likes having the fabric waved near his face. Maybe it has something to do with his love of peek-a-boo... I don't know. Anyway, someone requested a picture. These aren't super recent, but are the best I have for now without going to take another picture of him. This one was taken 1/8/2014 and is the first time he grabbed onto something other than my hair and his daddy's shirt. This was taken 12/27/2013 and is the first time I got a picture of him smiling.
So cute

Has anyone heard how high propane has gotten. A friend from leondardville just paid 5.05 gallon. That insane

I'm going to call tomorrow in my area and find out cost. I still 40% in my tank and 200 gallon on pre buy

That is exactly why I contract mine! I just hope we don't run out. We've used more this year than ever. I did see one source that said it was over $5 a gallon. I thank my lucky stars I don't have to come up with that money on top of my ridiculous electric bill.

That's why we're on all electric here, it has to be cheaper than running propane. I had propane at my house in Derby & that was 15 years ago now, so I haven't had to deal with buying that for quite some time. We do burn wood in our woodstove too when it's below 35 degrees or even sometimes above that. We have plenty of hedge wood around our property to cut & burn so as long as my DH continues to cut wood ahead a year we're good. He's been working on getting some cut for next year. I guess we're lucky we don't have to buy wood as well. He did buy some one year while he was in school & didn't have the time to cut wood, but it was cut way too long for our stove for the most part & he has had to deal with cutting it down to size. At least when he cuts it he knows about how long he needs to have it.

My DH has a helper out there today helping him with chores, our granddaughter is here. She's a city girl, so she's not too fond of chickens. She has had some bad experiences with roosters in the past, so she's kind of scared of them.

Ok guys, I need some advice for our area. What type of wormer have you found works the best for our area? (I am in southwest kansas more specificly). I have been having issues keeping weight on the girls and decided that even though they dont show any other signs (poops look good, feathers are shiny and nice, even a fecal float didnt show anything. everything seems so darn good) I want to atleast try deworming and see if it helps. However, not knowing what worms I should worry about, I dont know what wormer to pick. Anyone have any advice or knowledge to share?

It's best to worm for everything. A lot depends on how many chickens you have. I used injectable Ivermectin. 4cc per gallon of water or and safeguard liquid goat wormer. Same amount as ivermectin. This isn't probably cost effective for just a few birds. In that case Rooster booster is getting a real good reputation as a wormer and vitamin supplement.
Trish our electric cost quadruples propane costs. I have a heat pump and just lock it out in winter because it costs so much more to heat with the heat pump here. In fact if I had to do it over again I wouldn't have a heat pump at all. A wood backup would save us substantially but we are both too old and too busy to go cut wood all the time. We used to heat the shop with wood but don't even do that now. We are on rural electric and the price of electricity per KW is almost triple what it is in town.
I would love to have a solar heated water heating system in this house. It would save tons or even geothermal would be better. Better yet a modern energy efficient self sustaining home. I put top of the line heating in here when I bought this place. The most efficient systems I could buy. But if I had to do it over I would have purchased something else.

Woohoooooo !!!!!
Finally warm enough and me getting around to it. I put my aviary netting up temporarily today, and what a nice day it is before the polar plunge again. I have had this thing since before the holidays and been itching to try it out. So now the girls have the entire run of my garden area as I am not going to grow anything this year, cept for more birds!

Has me super excited to start with some chick shopping, I was on CL this morning and seeing some " we are taking orders " listings...........chicken danz, is that your post for eggs on there?

Another funny thing happened this week, for those of you that caught my post about my next door neighbor being the HOA pres and me the vp........he sticks his head over the fence while I was out watering the girls and asks " how many chickens will your coop hold?" I says, 6 or 7 easy, but dont worry I wont get that many.......he says....." You think I can get couple this spring and put them in there?

:gig

" of course" is my reply........chicks don't eat that much, and if there are any young roos.....well we can find them a good home away from here! His reply? " Great! I was hoping you would say that!"

So, looks like I am going to be in the market for about........hmmmmmmmmm 8 chicks?

Now, if my 2 girls would just start LAYING !!!!! :fl
