I agree Frizzled, they seem to be able to be together when they grow up together but adding one back in later just doesn't work. The one who was with the flock the whole time sees that as a challenge.

Holy molly, is there an end to this cold weather? Bet you'll never hear this from me, right? I think for a change, I'd like to have some warmer weather. Above freezing will be nice.:D

I've so busy at work my husband now becomes the primary care taker of the birds. I only go out there to clean tgeir coop and give them fresh water. I miss them a lot! Egg laying has picked up from 3 a day to 9 a day. We've had 11 the other day but of course this cold weather reduced it to 8 or 9. No complain here. I've also started them back on the FF. They definitely go gaga over it according to my DH.

Kicknchicken - welcome to our board. You are close to Danz so might want to check out her orps. Tons on very knowledgeable people here. We also love pictures so when you get the fuzzy butts, don't hesitate to post away.

With some casualties from the weather and the dogs (when they first arrived) plus some stopped laying due to old age, I think I need to hatch some replacements. Hoping to maybe do so in March when it gets a bit warmer. Our primary goal is eggs then meat. I'm not into different breeds.... yet. Maybe in the future I'll narrow it down to a few breeds I want.

Anyone watching the Sochi Olympics? I used to watch the summer and winter Olympics but now, not so much. I do, however, pay attention to the Shockers basketball. They are doing awesome!

Stay warm everyone. Lets hope for some warmer weather and sunshine.

Checking in, newbie from Paola. If you have any tips for a newbie please share. Or if you are in the area and would be interested in giving a tour of your setup that would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome!

Well good luck with your chicken endeavor, we're all enablers here so we can help you want more & more. I started out wanting only 6 layers, for some eggs for us. That didn't last long before that 6 grew to a bunch more layers & then on to add different breeds that I now hatch. I kept adding more pens & more coops.

I had to laugh at you calling us all a bunch of enablers. It's completely true.

What is with these crazy birds laying eggs when it's this cold?! I'm sorry you're not getting to watch the Olympics. DH and I love to watch, both summer and winter. About 20 years ago, when we were first together, we actually signed up for cable TV so we could watch the Olympics because that channel came in fuzzy.

I'm still getting one egg a day from my nine birds, but at least they're still laying. DH shoveled a little track for them this morning, so they actually came out of the coop a couple of times today. Not for long, but they did come out.

I am new to chickens and all the eggs, but am very surprised that by today, the 7th of the month, I have had 18 eggs laid so for for Feb. (not counting a frozen, and soft one) and I believe that is just from 4 of my girls. We have 8. I wonder what it will be like in the warm weather???

I have found i can keep multiple roosters that have been raised together in one coop, but once i separate them they cannot come back together as a peaceful group.
Thanks for that info. I was planning to basically just have 2 groups and they would not mix with each other. But thank you for the tip. Also, I am not sure if we are going to get any roosters. I have read that they can mature faster and get a little larger but personally I don't know if I want to hear any roosters.

I'm excited! Today's high is supposed to be 33*F!!! Maybe we might actually be able to melt some of this snow before the next round comes through tonight! That's right, there's snow in the forecast for this evening through Monday, but at least we've warmed up, if even just for a few hours! With a current temperature of 14*F, we're already almost as warm as we got yesterday, and it is only 8AM!

PLUS, my Wee One only woke me up once last night between 7PM and 7AM so I got more sleep last night than I have in a LONG while! Yay for the weekend starting off right!

It was 24 when I went out this morning and those extra few degrees since the past few days made a huge difference. It didn't hurt to take off my gloves and felt really pleasant, especially since there is NO wind.

My turkey toms were fighting furiously this morning for the first time. Normally I prefer to let them just work it out but I don't want them injuring each other right before breeding season so I finally grabbed the BR tom and put him in the sheep pen. I feel mean but in there the bedding is deep and he has access to fresh water and they won't be able to fight. Next time I got out, I'll try putting him back in the chicken yard and hope they are over it. Of course, they would start this when there are several inches of snow on the ground everywhere including the hoop coop so I can't just separate out one breed or the other into it.

Welcome kicknchicken. I've never really noticed that roosters mature faster than hens. They will be bigger for sure, if you are thinking about them only as a meat source. I've had a few precocious youngsters that started crowing at a young age (the record is 5 days old!) but most don't crow until around 5 months old. Right now I have a mature rooster and several juvenile cockerels who hatched Aug/Sept of last year. The cockerels have never crowed yet and my mature rooster only crows occasionally. Most days I never hear him - and I love the sound of a crowing rooster as it means I'm in the country

. I often think its ironic that when I lived in the city and couldn't have roosters, every cockerel I hatched grew into a rooster who loved the sound of his own voice. Now that I'm in the country and it doesn't matter, I have a "dream" city rooster, who only occasionally crows. By the way, I second whoever said that if raised together they get along fine. My cockerels have been raised in the flock and it is perfectly harmonious. The only time I've ever had an issue with roosters fighting was when I tried to add a mature rooster to a flock that already had a mature cock bird at its head.

It's just background music. Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Ugh, don't you hate fighting birds? Turkeys are kinda big and scary when they get into it too!

I am so far behind. We lost internet for a few days due to the weather so I was trying to stay caught up but then I lost a post so I have read but not responded!

Hoping today will be a nice break. It has been so miserably cold. We need to put more hay out for the horses so I think today is the day to do it.

I bought a nifty hose attachment for washing our small dogs in the bath tub and the UPS man left it on the steps yesterday (they usually hang it in a bag over the lamp post if nobody is home) and Lucie chewed the box and the hose up. GRRRRRR......guess I have to call Amazon and see if they will do anything about it. Must have been a different UPS man....
