Ewwww....one or both of my dogs got skunked last night - right in the chicken yard. So glad they have no expectations about coming in the house and also glad they were there to prevent loss of chicks or eggs.

I've been setting eggs in the incubator. I'm officially out of space. That means I need to fire up a second one before I can set any more eggs. I have some due to hatch tomorrow that are already starting to pip. Maybe that will give me a fraction more room. The other eggs in there aren't far enough along I feel good abut tossing them if I don't see development. Maybe in a few days I can candle those and see if I can make some room. I really wish it were warmer out. I would feel a lot better about finding a place to put spring chicks if it were.

My west pasture has a strong skunk smell, but it is coming from a dead skunk! I'm hoping an owl will haul it off tonight. The skunk had killed a Silkie hen before I got him.

I haven't let my birds out to free range since my DH saw that coyote for the second time. They aren't liking it at all and are guilt tripping me into feeling bad for them! They yelled real loud this morning when I didn't open the gate for them and even tried to intimidate the gate into opening.

Sadly, they are safer locked up until I can be relatively sure that the coyote isn't going to come back.

Sam and Holly got skunked the night I got back from Florida - they smell terrible :) This has happened numerous times before too and it just seems to take forever for them to get rid of that smell. I'm happy they're doing their job!

Yep, Lizzy, I have to agree about the safety - when you know there is one out there, its better to keep them in until it has moved on in search of easier prey.

It must be skunk breeding season or something! I was gone most of today and lost count of how many dead skunks I passed out on the highway. Between that and all the anecdotes of dogs getting skunked, they must really be on the move. I still don't know if one or both of mine got it because they are together most of the time and all I know is the smell is strong wherever they go. I haven't felt like petting them to find out which is the worst. I'm really thankful they were there. The birds were all locked up safely but if it hadn't encountered the dogs, it might have hung around until the auto door opened this morning.

Well, tomorrow is supposed to be nice again and then lousy weather this weekend. I will be outdoors a lot the next few days so am not looking forward to the sub-freezing weekend.

I've been outside this afternoon and it's been so much nicer than forecast. I got my feeding and watering done. Put some straw in some pens and nest boxes, gathered eggs etc etc. I also came in and whipped up two more chicken saddles. I got one on a hen and the other girl was sitting so I decided she could wait a bit.
I may need to make some for my brahma girls as well. I have four roosters in with them and I need to remove two of them. I want to keep the extra boys for back up. I just want to sell a few more of these breeder roosters first so the rooster pen isn't too busy.
I got another peafowl egg. That is now 5 I've gotten from the white peafowl pen. I guess in a couple weeks I'll be able to tell if they are fertile or not.
I got several eggs this afternoon. Yesterday was a bust but they did better today. I think I'll actually be able to fill some egg orders soon. I gathered a dozen or so that I am donating to a class to hatch.
I have had a couple people contact me. Does anyone have an extra Salmon Favorelle or a Lavender Orpington rooster available?
I had a hawk come down and try to snatch a chicken while I was out there. He was unsuccessful and got the dogs riled up. All the birds are confined other than the group that stays in the garage pen and the ducks. I've noticed him sitting on a power pole nearby for a few days but this is the first time I've seen him try to get something here.
I had thought about trying to move a pen today but I am worn out.

We haven't had a skunk issue around hear for about 12years.(knock on wood)...possums seem to grow on trees tho.
It was kind of a nice day out there, sunshine felt good without the wind . Maybe this next round of gross wether will be the last.

My GPs also got skunked again last night, phew they stink bad! The skunks really have been active lately, this is twice in the last couple weeks these dogs have gotten sprayed.

As of tomorrow I'm going to be out of incubator space as well, the difference is I don't have another cabinet incubator to fire up like you do Danz, I have to wait now for 3 weeks or so till mine empties out.

It turned out to be a really nice afternoon, we had to run to Wichita to do some shopping & I was surprised when we went out to eat lunch how warm it was. I didn't even need my coat while we were out. I'm finally going to be able to get my two peahens I've been waiting on getting for two months. That peacock out there will be in heaven when he sees his two new girls!

I found the Rooster Booster wormer today at TSC in Augusta HEChicken, thanks for telling us they had it. That saved me quite a bit of money even without a coupon because it's more expensive most places online & then shipping on top of that. I tried to sign up for the email with TSC, but for some reason I haven't gotten anything, maybe I need to sign up again.

I have all of my shipped eggs now & all made it in fine shape except one egg & wouldn't you know the one that got broken was from the closest in distance, go figure. I had some box damage on the one I got today, but fortunately the shipper had packed the eggs in an inside box & used foam egg shippers, so they were fine. I was a bit worried & opened the box at the PO because those were my most expensive eggs.

OQB I sent you a couple of PMs.
