Your Gardner auction thoughts were interesting @chicken danz . I thought the crowd was pretty small, but it was my first Spring one so I didn't have a basis of comparison. It never felt crowded and was easy to get around. I guess that means poorly attended. I didn't try to participate in the big-bird auction, those bleachers looked crowded. But, it was a nice day to be outside and super fun to see all the birds. I don't know that I'd like it so much if it were much more crowded.

Cream legbars are hatching! Woohoo... first 2 that have hatched are girls I ordered a bakers dozen hatching eggs for a very good price - they are hatching If anyone is interested, PM me and I will let you know the guys name on ebay - he lives in Oklahoma so travel isn't far at all for the eggs. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the rest.

Zig the spring auction is usually enormous. Last year it lasted until 10Pm. They were closing the gates at 6:00PM this time. The big disappointment was the quality of birds offered. I think just having that poor quality there made people leave too early and drove down the prices on the good stuff. Pretty sad state of things. I'm glad I didn't take stuff. I could have done okay on the geese but other than that I think I would have been spinning my wheels. Hows Chicky Mama doing?
It was a busy afternoon. I was gone most of it. I delivered eggs to three places, went to the bank and the drugstore, and then went to see my sister. I got my hair cut. It was getting so raged. I had quit taking my thyroid medicine for a time this summer and my stupid hair fell out by handfuls. It was so thin it was ridiculous, so now it's shorter than it has been in probably 25 years. But maybe it will fill back in now that it's not so raggedy. I hope.
We do have some thin hair in our family as well as some super thick hair. Of course I ended up with the worst of it.

Our granddaughter was at our house all day till just about an hour ago, so it was busy as usual with her here. They're out for spring break this week, so she came over to spend some time with us. She may come back Thurs. again if she doesn't have a game, she couldn't remember. She played outside while I was doing chores & trimmed off some little trees for me in the front yard I needed gone. She got the big pruners out so I told her if she wanted to do something she could cut trees for me. They come up thick in the yard from all of the acorns & seeds. She is growing up so fast, it just doesn't seem possible for her to be going on 10. Where does the time go?

I got first pullet eggs from two different breeds today, yay! I've been waiting for both of them to start laying, so maybe the others will get with it now too. My laying flock is just starting to crank out the eggs again.

I've got a bunch of eggs in the hatcher again that are due Thurs. I'm really excited about these because my blue laced Barnevelder eggs are in there as well as some Welsummers, Buff Orps, & Swedish Flower Hen eggs. All but the SFHs are mostly for me. Depending on what hatches I may have a few extras, but we'll have to see.

? Has any one ever needed to protect a gooses neck when breeding starts ? We have a Chinese goose(with that pretty long slender neck) and a sebbie he's quite a bit bigger and her neck is showing some wear and tear. I was wondering if I could cut the end off of one of my sons tube sox and make her a "sleeve "
But I didn't want to create another hazard with something around her neck. Any suggestions ?

22QZoo that might work but geese tend to stick their heads in stuff. I'd really be afraid she would catch it on something and not be able to get free. What you need is a few more girls around to spread his attention around.

Every one gets a little roughed up around here. The boys loose feathers the girls get bared and there's lots of yelling.
Trish it's great you get to spend time with your granddaughter during spring break...and better yet she likes to help you out. I have chicks due tomorrow as well. My first English Orpington chick from my girls is due to hatch. That's pretty exciting to me. They'd laid for quite a while but weren't fertile till I trimmed their bottoms.
I had a breakfast to attend this morning but I decided I've been on the go too much so I stayed home. I need the down time.
That wind howled all night and is still blowing a good clip this morning. It's going to feel mighty frigid out there today. When I can put my darned winter jackets up for the year I'll be happy!

It's supposed to be 60 today, but tomorrow is supposed to be even nicer at 72. After that we have some 50 degree days next weekend. I'll be glad when it stays a bit warmer. I can't complain about 50 too much after the winter we had, but it would be nice to have the 60s & 70s consistently. I'll be glad when the nights don't get so cold as well so I can pick up my heated waterers.

, I hope they all hatch for you. Wish me luck as well especially with the Barnevelder eggs, I hope I get a good hatch & quite a few blues. Of course I won't be able to tell the blues till they start feathering out.

We were only forecast for 54 and it made it to 55. I did wash my car today. It wasn't really warm enough but it was filthy. I had straw and stuff from birds in there as well I had to vacuum out.
Thanks for the well wishes Trish. I hope I do have a good hatch. If I don't it will be my fault cause all the eggs are fertile that are in there. I did have to clean out a nasty mess this morning. I had an egg crack in the middle and go bad. Whew! That was smelly. It didn't burst but it leaked down on the tray below. Yuk!
I still haven't got a clue where I'm going to put tomorrows hatch. I have a ton more eggs on the counter to incubate too. I'm afraid I am going to have to fire up a third incubator. If I ever get the rest of these birds picked up I might be able to make a little room for younger ones.

I candled the eggs under Copper today. I removed one yesterday that was cracked and another one this morning that was clear (through candling). The last 3 seem to be developing. All three are from the same two pullets -- Copper (on the eggs) and one of the pure Marans, Lacey. If they hatch they may be really interesting -- Buff Orp, Marans, and EE (rooster) should produce interesting chicks.

I'm working on getting the hoop ready for her, and over the weekend I'm going to move her and her eggs to the hoop. I just hope she takes the move well.

I have a backup, though. Today is day 14, and a week from Saturday is chick day at Bluestem if none of them hatch.
