Kids had a blast way too cold for me

Well it is flea season. I would normally spray the yard with sprays. But since I have chickens now who have free range of the yard, I need something safe. I hear using DE is a good flea killer. Does anyone know where to find a huge bag?? My local atwoods only has small bags and I'd break the bank for the amount I need to buy? Or does anyone else have ideas how to rid my yard of those evil creatures?? Live in Wichita

I got a 50 lb bag at Premier Farm and Home Supply in Topeka several years ago. http://www.haycow.com/ is their web address. You might call first (if you are anywhere near there). it wasn't too expensive considering the amount.

I'm not sure it will be effective with fleas. I know that Borax (as in 40 Mule Team Borax) works to dry out the fleas and their eggs in the house, but I'm not sure it would work in a yard. Even before I had chickens, I didn't spray the yard, I just treated the dogs, cats, and house.

We've always used sevin dust for fleas, even in the chicken coop for mites. But that was before the hens started laying. Our vet told us that the sevin dust would not harm the chickens. We've always used sevin dust in the garden, so I checked with my vet before I used it last year out there. When we saw mites on the raised floor of the coop he said to sprinkle the dust on the floor before we put down new shavings. It did the job well with no adverse reactions. But I will check with him again if I need to use it around hens who are actively laying.

Edited for spelling. After writing this I went back to piecing a quilt and remembered that Seven dust is spelled SEVIN. Oops!
Hope everyone is having a fantastic morning.

I have already treated the dogs 2x and the house. But keep having fleas. So I need to do the yard bad.

I am starting to get over-run by Muscovy duck babies. I just kept too many hens this spring. It's mostly my fault because I made several nest for them out of cut down 15 gallon barrels. I also have been using them in my breeder pins, and when a hen goes broody I move her to my "hatching pen". They don't always get their own eggs. As I moved a Cuckoo Marians hen last night and gave her guinea eggs. I also took some photos.

That's a lot of ducks; very cute!

He was so nasty with me and wouldn't quit yelling and threatening. If my chicks had had cocci they would have died 10 days ago...not now. DH says he probably threatened everyone he bought chicks from the same way. I just take this very personal because the birds are my life...not just a handful that happened to hatch or a half dozen hens for eggs. I work at it very very hard, and feel guilty if I fail to keep them all healthy and alive.
I am just feeling so bummed out. I do pride myself on the health and quality of my chicks. I have things happen...like just had some mold in the brooder house near one of the water stands and lost some chicks to it. Makes me feel inefficient.
Oh well I'll get over it and go on. I think I am just so worn out from such a busy spring that every thing is bothering me a lot more.

If he knows anything about chicks, he'll know it wasn't you. He'll have to calm down some, first.

Your DH is probably right; he probably had a tantrum at everyone bought chicks from.

It cooled me right off just looking at your picture!

I'm annoyed at my SIL and I shouldn't be. She told us not to visit my nephew Tuesday, we couldn't yesterday because DH was at work, and there's a good chance we won't be able to today. She says he needs his sleep and can only have two visitors. All that's true, but it's not like we couldn't switch off visitors for 20 or 30 minutes. NO ONE calls to let us know how he is and I'm not calling her any more because it seems to annoy her. I know she has a lot on her mind, but he's also sleeping a lot and she could make a call or two once in a while. He certainly wants to see people; he's mentioned it on FaceBook a couple of times. My in-laws talked to her yesterday and apparently he's sleeping too much, not too little. He was supposed to get up and walk Tuesday but said he was too dizzy. Yesterday he said he was too weak, but they made him do it anyway and he got all shaky and sweaty. His kidneys aren't fully functioning yet, either. He's hoping to be home Friday, but I'm not sure it's going to happen. He doesn't heal quickly from things; he had a pilonidal cyst removed about a year ago and it took months and months for the incision to fully heal. I told my SIL to tell the surgeon about that before his neck surgery, but I don't know if she did.

I used Frontline with my GPs outside last year and that absolutely did nothing for them. My vet said fleas are immune to Frontline/Frontline Plus. I now use Vectra 3D for the GPs and use Revolution for the 2 inside dogs. I also use Advantic Tick collars on the GPs because the ticks are thick here and I can usually pick a couple 3 off of them daily. I don't treat the yard since I've 10 acres for the dogs to roam about and I'll go broke treating that much area.

I do use Sevin in the chicken coop and nest boxes to keep mites and other crawly critters down. I used to use DE but I didn't find it effective on mites so I now use Sevin.

I hope you will find cost effective for your yard.
