Consolidated Kansas

Good morning peeps... looks like the board has been on the slow side yesterday. I saw that the forecast is calling for cooler weather starting tomorrow... hooray! My ducks have stopped laying for a while now so I'm hoping they will pick back up soon. I think DH found 2 duck eggs yesterday so maybe we will have more duck eggs soon. I need them for baking very soon so fingers crossed that those eggs will come just in time for my baking frenzy.

Sharol... I have not a clue about the worm in the picture. I'm sure Danz and others will chime in soon to let you know what to get to treat the birds. I'm going to worm them in December when they slow down their laying.

Those look like round worms to me. You can use several things. Wazine, Ivermectin injectable, etc etc.If one has them they probably all do. I don't like Wazine because that is basically all it treats but it is the cheapest option.
I'm waiting for the truck to show up with the building materials. They haven't been able to reach them yet.

This morning I found worms that looked just like this in poo on a roost. What are they? They are thinner than roundworms (I think). What should I use to banish these ickies.

I have Ivermectin (pour on) and Wazine. What do I need to buy?
sharol those are round worms. I would get some Valbazen or Safeguard, 3cc per gallon. That will also get any other worms they may have. The Wazine really isn't very good & then you can follow that with Ivermectin in two weeks.

tweety, I'm glad your ducks are starting to lay again, mine have been taking a break as well & haven't started back up.

Do you do that like the Wazine? Put it in all of the water for 24 hours. Is it safe for my 5 week olds or should they be kept away from it?

My understanding is Valbazen cannot be diluted in the water like other wormers. I use it as a last resort because it is the only wormer that treats tapeworm, so if I know they have tapeworm I'll use it (but it has to be administered an oral dose individually per bird - twice 7 days apart). You can use the Safeguard or Injectable Ivermectin in the water so if I knew I had roundworms, that is what I'd choose to do.

Edited because I noticed I said "Wazine" when I meant "Valbazen". Wazine can of course be diluted in water, for anyone who read my post before I caught my error.

I ordered Safeguard from Amazon and it will be here on Friday. Thanks for the info. Neither the vet nor Bluestem had either valbazen or Safeguard in a size I could afford, so I went with the fall back. I really LOVE amazon Prime.

Do you administer The Safeguard like Wazine (24 hours only source of water is the medicated water)? is it safe for my 5 week olds?

I've never used Safeguard on chickens, to be honest. When I use injectible Ivermectin (similar I think), I use it as the sole source of water for 48 hours and whoever is in the flock, that is all they get. It is sort of self-dosing since a chick will drink much less than a turkey, so each gets the amount they need.

Sharol I guess I should have been more specific. I use the safeguard goat drench. It's around $20 for a little bottle. I use 4cc per gallon of water and I always add sugar. All my birds hate it and will get really thirsty before drinking it. I keep it out for three days to make sure they get some. I have also mixed up a smaller slightly more concentrated batch and used a dropper to individually treat the birds if it is a certain pen with a few birds I am treating. Safeguard does do the best job of worming than anything else I have used. This stuff is all pricy but most of it lasts a long time. I ordered the $100 bottle of Ivermectin last time because I got so much more. I can go through one of those $40 bottles in just one worming if I do all the birds at once.
I plan to individually dose every bird when I move them to the building even though I worm on a regular basis. It's going to be impossible to worm them in their water with my pressurized water system I am putting in unless I switch to bowls for a few days to worm.

They're all pricey for the most part, but necessary. I have used the safeguard before because when I had turkeys & peafowl it was recommended for them.

Well my meany BR rooster got processed today. I'm so glad to have that over with. He's in the crockpot now. My poor hen is still traumatized & I plan to let her have some time alone to recover.

Good morning peeps.

Since Sharol brought up the worming topic, I went home to make sure I've some Safeguard on hand and for the life of me, I could not find it. I have a box with tons of stuff in it just for birds but Safeguard Goat wormer was not in the box. I remember using it this past Spring to worm the birds so I may have misplaced it some where. I hate going to the store to get another bottle because like everyone said, it's expensive. Since I plan on worming the birds when they slow down their laying, I supposed I can wait a little while.

Trish, glad your mean BR roo is gone. I was getting a killing cone from a neighbor but in the last minute, she backed out of the deal. I have been using an old orange cone from road construction (don't know where it came from, I thought DH brought it home by accident one day so I decided to use it ). It was not a good cone so I wanted to get a metal one instead. Well, I guess I'll have to either get it from Amazon or eBay.

Cooler weather for the next few days so it will be a good time to get some outside chores done. I think the warm weather will be back though according to the forecast. And of course, no rain. I think NE KS gets the rain but us in South Central KS get nothing. That's what the weatherman said. We sure could use some rain. It's bone dry here.

Have a good day!
