Consolidated Kansas

I just went out to the coop and my beautiful splash orp rooster had died overnight.

. He was the baby from one chooks chick had given me. He was so pretty.
You will be missed, my pretty baby!
I'm sorry for your loss, it's hard to lose those special ones.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!! I'm trying to figure out what to do so my other one doesn't stress out really bad from being alone with no other alpacas.

The ligaments are gone on my doe that I've been waiting on to kid so Hopefully we'll have hooves on the ground by this evening! I'm So Excited!!

Good luck with the doe, I hope everything goes well.

Thanks! Its not easy that's for sure. I am glad she's not suffering anymore. I'm also feeling kind of relieved to not be stressing about trying to save her and wondering what's wrong and all the doctoring. Chores were a breeze this evening!
We got my chicken coop sealed finally today too so that was awesome to get that out of the way.

The Penofin turned out to be a lot oranger than I wanted but it was leftover from what we used to mix the color for the house so I'm not going to be picky.
Congrats on the chicken coop!

Boy I was hoping for a warmer day today, but it's cloudy here now & cooler, ugh. I had high hopes for taking some tarps off pens to give the hens more light & now I don't know whether to do it or not. I guess I'll see how the day goes. I threw the little lamb outside for awhile while my DH is out there doing chores, he is driving me absolutely nuts in the house. He's getting bigger & is starting to get into mischief in here. He really needs to go out with the other sheep, if only they would accept him.

All the losses on here lately are really sad. Sorry guys..

I lost my last Black-tailed Japanese bantam during that last cold snap we had. I just hated that. She was just so sweet. I've learned that bantams really need some kind of heat in the winter, I think. Although, I don't think it was the cold that got her. She was healthy, happy and scooting around in the afternoon and by early evening we found her in the coop. No blood, congestion, diarrhea or anything at all.

Trish44, I just took a walk around the yard and took some mealworms to the chickens and the sun is out -- it's just beautiful here. Hope it warms up down there very soon.

Tomorrow is Day 7 and I will probably candle. My chickens have such fluffy butts that I am concerned about fertility. I have 23 eggs in the incubator so it will be interesting to see how many of them made it through excess feathers and cold temps.

It will also be interesting to see how my lower humidity is effecting the air sack. I imagine I'll have an improvement there. Can't wait to see what's up!

I need a broody, I want to hatch some of my eggs while they still carry my orps potential. I have one in the coop I think may be going broody.

I have been casually looking for a lgd on Craigslist, what is the deal in Texas? I counted 59 ads. Some are good adult dogs too that supposedly are good with poultry. They seem to be throwaways down there, just sad.

Did anyone buy anything this weekend???? I spent quite a bit of time outside today, and I have one peahen that is blind in one eye. :( didn't notice it earlier in the winter. My coop needs cleaning bad, I can barely breathe in there.

Oh and I let my blind cameo hen out yesterday to enjoy the sun, and when I went to find her to put her in, she was nowhere to be found! She doesn't answer me either. Our fence is 4 1/2 feet and she doesn't normally try to fly. I guess the males had probably jumped on her and freaked her out and she had jumped out of the fenced backyard! I searched the front and there she was, laying down in a little patch of forest just waiting for momma to come get her. I guess I can't let her out without babysitting her, that was scary. So glad I found her.

I dosed all my babies peas today, they were looking a little droopy winged. I hope I got them all, right now having a hard time telling them apart!

Well I have kept playing around with the idea of raising chickens for awhile.
Had already been reading on here for months, building coop almost competed (1 more weekend)
So today I entered the point of no return while shopping today and picked up 2 Bantams and 2 Cornish cross chicks.
They were out of Rhode Island reds until Tuesday when I will be getting 2 of those.
So let the adventure begin.

Tots adorbs! (in my daughters' language, that means totally adorable)

Hope you built enough room in the coop to accommodate the aftermath of Chicken Math that will inevitably set in.

You probably know this but Don't get attached to the Cornish cross, they are specifically meat birds. They get leg issues and stuff and were only meant to live a few months.

Welcome to the chicken world! They are quite fun. :)

Congrats on your first chicks. Feel free to update with us and ask any questions you might have. I was trying to look at your bantams more closely to see what they were. Do they have feathered feet?
