Consolidated Kansas

Got the shiny slick floor sprayed with some sort of spray on undercoat for vehicles. That was after this picture was taken. Still trying to figure out the purpose of the little room. In this pic you can see the little opening at the floor. It was put there for a purpose. You can also see a boarded up opening about the size of a chicken door. Best answer gets a big pat on the back. I'm stumped as to what to use it for. Do they make mother in law apartments for chickens?

My best guess is they would use it when they wanted to integrate the babies into the big flock, they block it up when little but as they got old enough to start being with the grown up birds, they could have a place to retreat that the adults couldn't get them. Just a guess, though. ???

I had read something like that somewhere else, before we got this. That's why I thought maybe it was a place for a broody hen to nest and hatch out chicks without being bothered.

I don't know, danz. I was told some type of Cardinal! I will have to do research. The only place I saw them was in a park area, I thought so pretty!
I looked it up. It's called a red crested cardinal. It is actually a type of tanager and not related to a true cardinal. They came from south America and were introduced there, not a native bird. Thanks for sharing.!

Danz, still thinking of traveling South, but Sunday was crazy and this weekend does not look any better now. 2 retirement parties that are must attends this coming Sat. I will try and pm you by Fri if I think can make the trip.
Just let me know a little ahead of time if you can. No problem.

Thank you all for your input. It has a flat roof but im going to add an A frame roof. The coop is 4 w 4 l and 6 h four 1x1 nesting box. The run is 4x8 i will have an additional 8x8 addition when founds allow. Chicks are in the house i have four Rir. Any and all suggestions are welcome.
First suggestion. Keep building. You will most likely need the extra space. Not only is better for the birds but it doesn't require so much cleaning if it's larger.

How did you vent it do there was no draft
Not Chickenrookie but I'm answering any way. Vents are usually placed up higher in the coop and put on the South and either the east or west sides. I have mine rigged so I can close them if necessary but some of them are never closed. The important thing is to block the the north wind in winter. My vents all have doors or covers which I can close although they rarely ever get closed. Chickens are really hearty. Only chicks really need protection from drafts in general.

Most of the time I think I would have the door open If I were you. My guess is that the little square about the size of a door is simply a short stud for support of that board the vent or window sits on. No function otherwise.

Maybe the area you question was for a dozen or fewer chickens and the rest was divided for storage or something else. This is divided similar to your coop, but too fancy for this old man's chickens.

I can't wait to show this to DH -- with the comment, "And you thought my expectations were too high! Count your blessings babe!" Too fancy for this old woman's chickens too -- they prefer space to fashion!

Doing surprisingly well for having a foreign object shoved under the skin in my chest yesterday! I've been out visiting the chickens and chicks. The chicks are absolutely loving their fermented feed. It's so cute when most all of them flop down to sleep at the same time after pigging out. I love having chicks, even though they are a lot of work.

I got a deal on another EcoGlow 50, can't wait for it to get here. I really don't like having the heat lamps in my craft room.

Holy Chicken Mansion, Batman! I'm really glad your birds aren't expecting this sort of accommodations, Ralph! Although, if we don't get the rain they are talking about, my friend has given me several partial buckets of paint and I've been toying with the idea of doing a sort of pastel version of the Partridge Family bus inside. It might inspire the EE's. GRIN!

Classy!

All I can think when I look at that is how much they had to clean before the took the picture. The chicks dust would be insane. I know..... I deal with it all the time.

Me too. Those chicks have been in my craft room for several days and everything is covered with dust. Everything, okay, not me, but everything else.

MsDebD, You have given me a vision of EE chickens rolling down the highway peering out the windows of the Partridge Family Bus! I admit, I'm a dork and easily amused. I think I would do some fancy painting inside my coop, if it would increase fertility and inspire one of the girls to get off the nest! I really want her eggs. I might even go so far as to get them a Futon! LOL! If you do paint that coop, I want to see it -- that would be too cool.
