Can anyone tell me what breed this is? It's 8 days old now. The guy gave it to us as a white leghorn, but then we saw the feathers on its feet....

Key flock, I don't know but not pure with those lightly feathered feet. Cute tho!

KeyFlock that's definitely not a Leghorn. I'm wondering if it could be a Salmon Faverolle, it kind of looks like the chicks I used to hatch from mine. It doesn't look like a Cochin, they have more feathers on their feet.

Well we got more rain this morning, so we're finally getting some good moisture, it's about time. If it keeps this up I may actually have to mow the yard before long. That's OK, I would rather mow than have a dead yard. Half of it is already dead anyway from the last two years with not enough rain. We have lost quite a few trees as well.

Poor prairie is having to do an intensely assisted hatch due to my weird birds! She is doing outstanding!

I think there was only a couple that were not malpositioned.

And my orps usually require assist because they are so huge in the shell they usually can pip but not zip. So she is getting hands on training!!!

And Prairie, no normally hatching is NOT this hard, ok? I am feeling kind of bad about it.

thndrdancer birds that are too big for the shell are usually caused by too much humidity during incubation. Just saying.

Here are some updates pictures of the girls (and a boy or 2)
Brought them home March 8th and they are growing greatly fast.

One of my Bantams has a real dark red comb while my other Bantam has a light one.

The 2 cornish are getting real big, planning on butchering 1st weekend of May with them.
Looks kind of like a easter egger from this position.

The I'm guessing is a rooster. Yep looking like one. I can see sickle feathers

Trying to remember, think this is one of my Americanas . Looks like a hatchery barred rock to me. The barring isn't fine enough to be a dominique.

Probably just like a thinner light brahma. It could possibly be a pure light brahma if he has hatchery stock. Their foot feathering isn't as pronounced as a quality bird would be. If you aren't familiar with them this is an example:

This one would be a show quality hen. All the fine penciling on her black feathers and nice foot feathering.

I had several sabastopols hatch yesterday. I had held off watering them when I put them in the brooder with the ducks and the ones that were hatched earlier. Simply because I knew the ducks in particular want to splash water every where. I got busy and came back in in 30 minutes to disaster. I had one dead and two soaked but still standing and three more that were laying and nearly dead. I rubbed them with a rag to stimulate and dry them and put them back in the incubator. It was late so I just left them there over night. I was sure glad to see they ones that were doing poorly recovered. I had one big gosling that just wasn't doing well. She never got up after hatching. She was just way too big for her shell so she had a hard time and wore herself out. She passed during the night. That didn't surprise me. But on the bright side I had three more goslings hatch over night. I still have some eggs that aren't pipped yet. I am trying very hard to be patient.
I also had a very large batch of chicks hatch yesterday and still have some stragglers... my fault because I missed moving one tray full to hatch. I had been incubating them in very low humidity and somehow failed to get one tray moved. I will probably loose several before it's all over. Makes me feel like a monster.
I had someone call this morning wanting to come get a particular type of chick. They would be culls from one of my breeding projects. It was before my coffee and I need to call him back. He left a message. I'm just not ready to go to the building and count chicks out there yet.
People that know me know I am incommunicado early in the day. I need time to fuel up for a couple hours before I talk in the morning.

I'm like you Danz, mornings aren't my best time. I need time to get some medications in my system and coffee flowing in the veins.

I am particularly slow this morning. I'm still trying to recover from all the work in the garden. My body hurts everywhere but it was worth it. I'm going to get back out there in a couple minutes and torture my body some more. I have more to plant and DH is still making raised beds. Be careful what you wish for! I never expected him to make this many but he says he has the process down and wants to get them done for the entire garden. Naturally, if they're done, I feel like they should be filled and planted! So it's a good thing, just a little more work than I expected to do this year. I guess it's his way of keeping me from using his tools. He finally said I could use his tools to build them myself but I think he's determined to build as many as I need so he won't have to worry about me using his tools. Rather sweet, really.

That's disheartening about your Sebastapols and the overlooked tray for the hatcher --

My 3 older daughters went to a competition in Dallas for 3 days for band and they returned through all that rain last night. I couldn't sleep until DH went to pick them up from school at 1 a.m. They did very well and had lots of fun but I am so glad to have them back home.

I don't blame you Danz about it taking awhile to fuel up & get going in the morning. I'm the same way, I don't want to see anyone till I have had my coffee & gotten totally awake & moving, which doesn't happen early since we're up late around here on DH's schedule. Congrats on the goslings, I hope they all do OK. My next hatch will be ducklings this time.

We had more rain last night & this morning & are expected to still get some later this afternoon. I know we need the rain, but not all at once. We could spread it out a little so the ground doesn't get so saturated at once. Maybe the grass will get to growing now that it's had some good moisture though.

Deerfield you were posting when I was. Wow on the raised beds, I wish someone would build me some. Actually though what I want is one of those Garden Trugs from Gardener's Supply. It's tall & you can get a bug screen that I think would help keep the chickens out.

Hi Trish! We actually had to mow before the rain this time. We didn't get as much rain as you last night, I don't think. But we did get some. Hoping I don't have to wait too long to plant stuff.

All the strawberries I planted are doing great, but I lost one pepper plant. I think it's the one I let the kids put in -- too deep, I think. Should have checked it closer, but it looked alright at the time.
