Thanks for the offer of chicks, chicken danz. I might do a road trip soon and get some. I don't get home til Monday afternoon and leaving here Sunday night so it's going to be a dreadfully long night/day.
I will have to let u know.
I sell birds year round. I can't help my obsession to throw eggs in the incubator.

I had one success today. Early last week, I dropped a developing Sabastopol egg on the floor and broke the entire top of it out. The chick was still alive and of course the membranes were bleeding. I grabbed the scotch tape and taped up the end but purposely didn't make it air tight. I sat the egg upright at the bottom of the incubator for several hours to let the bleeding stop before I put it back in the hatching trays. Well Low and behold that little guy hatched this afternoon. I had to take some tape off a couple times while he zipped so he could continue to make progress but he finally wiggled out of his poor old broken shell. I am so happy!!! I am such a clumsy idiot I was sure I had killed him. I've saved a few chicks from cracked eggs before but never one that was totally missing one end. And of course a goose is an awesome chick to save. Made me super happy.

That's amazing Danz!

Prairie Fleur, glad your chick made it!

Yesterday we doubled the space of the brooder for the 57 chicks. We didn't really need to but as they grow, we will be glad we did it. They are two weeks old already. The smaller brooder needs to be set up in the shop, it's still in the craft room along with the dust. Just not enough hours in a day!

I filled the incubator yesterday so I have 48 eggs and we'll see how fertility goes this time. I did open some eggs to make sure fertility had improved so I think I am good to go. I am already talking to them! LOL! Gives the kids something to talk about. :D

I am still working on the garden and managed to plant 14 pepper plants and 40 strawberry plants today. It took me forever. I had to keep sitting down to rest. I'll be so happy if they can ever figure out what is wrong with me. Have more raised beds to fill and plant and need to add the watering system to the new beds.

Hope everyone gets some rain! We sure could use it. My pond is completely dry.

No they incubated on their side most of the time and I gave them 24 hours narrow end down in a carton after they got here to settle. Every one of the aircells that I could see why perfectly shaped and it the proper place. I've no idea what caused this.

Prairie Fleur, what a sweetie baby you have there. Chicks are so cute!

Thndrdancr, we finally had a nice rain this morning, before that the rain just seemed to be everywhere but here. There is a chance of rain here every day till Sunday, so I hope we get some more.

Trish44 did you get any rain?

We seem to be getting every one's rain lately. Got some more last night, although not a lot. We still have water sitting everywhere.
Deerfield I worked in the garden yesterday as well. I had some last years bean seed and planted 4 rows of green beans. I am sure I'll lose some germination to age but i normally have good luck with old seed. Then I went to the basement and gathered some garlic and onions that were left and over the hill. I separated the onions that were sprouting and planted them. If they live, great. If they don't no great loss...other than my time. I had some garlic that was getting dry as well so I stuck some cloves in the ground. This is the wrong time of year to plant garlic. It's not going to hurt anything if none of it comes up. I had tons of it left over. I had a bunch of garlic scapes and dug a row to put those in. I had read it takes three years for scapes to grow a nice garlic plant. But they were there and I wasn't doing anything with them. I had intended to plant some of the garlic bulbs in the fall but never got it done. If I get some fine. If I don't that is okay too. I still have a good supply of garlic. There were enough bulbils I could potentially have tons of garlic plants. Again it was the wrong time of year to plant them but who knows. And I read that mice like to eat those so they may all disappear.
Prairie I have no idea what the deal is with your upside down chicks. That is really strange. I moved a few birds around yesterday and plan to move a few more today. One of these days I might half way get things where I want them.

Yes we did get some rain this morning, we sure need it. It's supposed to rain tomorrow as well. So much of the time we watch the storms go around us on all sides but get nothing. I'm very thankful we have gotten some since we have animals that need grass to grow. We're out of hay so we're depending on the grass to feed them through the summer.

Prairie Fleur that is a cute baby. For some reason it didn't turn like it was supposed to in order to hatch from the large end of the egg. I have never had that happen. I'm still having stragglers hatching today, they're slow pokes. I need to take a pic of my brooder right now, it's full of chicks.

Well one of my breech babies managed to zip and hatch by himself! I am so pleased. I have 2 others that I'm not sure will make it. :( oh well. I currently have 4 eggs that haven't pipped yet. One that's pipped on the correct end and another banty egg that pipped on the wrong end this morning. Guess we'll see how it goes today!
