Consolidated Kansas

Well, today didn't have the best of endings. DH and I had been working on planning an anniversary trip to the Bahamas and the whole thing fell thru. Looks like we'll be staying home again. I thought we'd found something that would work, but MIL got sick and life happened and I guess it just won't work this year - again. :hit I know I'm probably being wimpy about it but I was Really hoping it'd work out. It's been several years since we've done anything to celebrate and I had sure hoped it'd work this year.... I'm trying to convince myself that I'd rather be home hatching eggs and working around the farm anyway, but I'm not sure it's working. :/

I'm sorry your trip didn't work out, maybe next year?

Mama2Bellas welcome to the group!

Deerfield, you crack me up! I'm glad you're getting your garden all in, wow have your hubby come down my way & put some beds in for me. I still would like to have that garden trug but we'll see how the money goes this summer. I have two rolls of goat & sheep fence to buy for the next section & whatever else we need to get for that. I just added two new lambs to the flock Weds. I got a new ram to replace the butthead ram I sold & this one was just weaned so he will have some growing to do before he can assume his job. I also got another little ewe along with him in case my ewe that rejected her lamb this time doesn't turn out to be a good mother. Either way I will have a replacement ewe or another one to sell extra lambs from. I'm hoping it was just first time mom & circumstances that caused the problem. I sure don't want to have to bottle feed all of her lambs, that's a lot of work I don't relish repeating.

MrsProf the vent sexing really is better done by professionals because it is really hard to do & you can injure the chicks if not done right. They have people at the hatcheries just standing there doing that all day long & even then they make a few mistakes.

tatinatimom those look like roos to me at that age. Usually the pullets don't have that much of a comb or that red at that age.

I'm trying to catch up on reading, this thread has been pretty busy lately. I'm still in the middle of hatching season & have another hatch due in a couple of days. I have another tray of eggs to go in when I take one out. My incubator has been running on full. I have resumed my chicken & animal chore duties again & last night was a real mess. I had moved my Buff Orp chicks out to a new pen I built yesterday & they managed to escape & get all piled up between the chain link & my mesh tarp. One of them probably didn't live till morning because it got itself really injured getting hung in the fence. I was so upset with them because after rescuing them & putting them all back into the pen they tried to go there again. So that resulted in having to move my New Hamp trio to the new pen, then move my Cream Legbars to their pen, & finally to put the Buff Orps in the pen where the Cream Legbars had been. Geez, I never would have dreamed all of that would happen. I finally got them in what had been my growout pen & put their igloo in there so they could snuggle in that. They were terrified by the time I got them moved in there. I hope they make it now after all of that.

Crooked toes...sorry

No problem, just making sure before I chimed in with my opinion.

The crooked toes aren't a problem. They are a genetic flaw and you wouldn't want to use the bird for a breeder if you were culling for improvement in a flock or selling the chicks. If you were using the bird to raise meat birds or laying hens for your own flock, not a problem. It's not going to cause the birds any health issues in future.

Grain Gypsy, Happy new HVAC to you! We need to do that one of these days. Ours isn't quite horrible enough for us to part with the money over. Just one of those things we don't really like to spend money on. I'm with you on the home warranties. They don't really take care of much but wasting a lot of time and getting the homeowner off the hook for possible problems after the sale. Whoever came up with that grand idea is making a lot of money.

Prairie Fleur, So sorry to hear about your disappointment over the anniversary.

It's okay to be disappointed. I know the feeling. I can't count how many times our anniversary plans went to heck in a hanky. Even when they worked out we celebrated the wrong darn day for years. The kids finally asked "So is the date on the clock (grandfather clock) one day off from your anniversary for a reason? We just looked at each other and I said "Uh oh." He said. "Oh well."

Trish, Hubby is too tired to come down and help you out -- I have him exhausted up here, to hear him tell it!

I was telling him yesterday that I gave him props for the garden and watering system on BYC. He casually said "Did you tell them about how I redid the bathrooms, put in your window seat (his idea), take care of the cars and everything else around here?" I smirked and said "Heck, no, did you tell everyone you know that I do all the mowing on this plantation?" He said "Seriously now, some of the guys at work never do any projects for their wives." I didn't even look up but said "Divorced, or soon to be." He said "Some are but that's not the point." I said "It is entirely the point. Nobody needs a lazy man or one so ignorant he can't do anything. They get kicked to the curb, so watch yourself." He cracked up and said "I'm not scared of you. You asked for those beds years ago." I think he's getting a bit clever with me. He may find himself pulling weeds with the kids, that is, if he doesn't trick me into doing it myself.

I was wondering if this chick might have some gold laced wyandotte in it? There is a chance for a purebreed one from who I got the eggs from, but other wise could be a mix with a new hampshire or a buff. Of course, knowing my luck it will have GLW and then turn out to be a roo.....but SO cute right now. They are 6-7 days old right now!

I had another partridge brahma from Danz hatch today!!! :celebrate my broody hatched it out and she's sitting on one of my eggs yet. Don't know if it'll hatch yet or not. How old can chicks be and still imprint on a hen? I'm tempted to stick another chick or two under her for her to care for. Danz, have you ever had a broody hen raise pheasants?

I'm still new to this chicken life so please bare with me on all my questions. I have 2 Bantams that are 3 weeks old. As of right now they are kept in an 30 gallon tote with light and all that. Since its been nice outside durning the day I have been taking them out & letting out into a kids play yard in the grass. Since I'm home working in biggie. I know I can't leave out alone since I have dogs and always worried about hawks, but are they to young to be out for an hour or so since it's still only in the 70's?

Hello all. I see everyone is busy with new additions and gardens, and all things Spring.
So far it's been a wet one, and in this farming/ranching community we are hoping for more, but not too much of course (ever notice how hard it is to please a farmer)!

@chicken danz I also use cardboard and old paper feed bags for weed control. I have been using a layered method in the last couple of years.

We also got a new addition recently. His name is Odin and he is a 5 1/2 month old Corgi/Dutch Shepard mix. He's been great so far, my boys adore him.
