Consolidated Kansas

So, my sons 4th birthday is coming up, we finally got our coop done, and we want chickens! We are looking for good egg layers. What would you guys suggest for breeds & places to buy? We're located between Manhattan and Topeka. I know the guy in Onega is selling all his, but we were worried about our son picking out a chicken and then not being able to get it because it's an auction, and not a direct buy. We can have 6 chickens in town and are soooooo excited!!! I don't want to wait till spring to get them and I think it would be a great birthday gift for the little man! :3
EDIT: we do have an incubator if necessary (we used it once and has 9 out of 12 successfully hatch)

So do you want chicks or adults?

Well I am just heartbroken and upset. My dog Fluff is missing. He has been neutered and stays at home watching the birds at the house while the others tend to guard the outside area. He's been gone three days now and that is not like him. He would be here if he could be. I know in my heart he is either deceased or someone has taken him. He was such a lover that any one could pick him up if they could lift him. About 120 pounds or so. I am just sick. I love that dog so much. I've walked the property line and DH has driven the roadside to look for him. There is no county animal control and every one around here knows I am the only one close who has great pyrenees. I so need him and want to find him but I am feeling he has probably been killed. A local shot one of my other dogs a couple years back and it wouldn't surprise me if he wouldn't do it again if he saw an opportunity. I could never prove it was him but I know it was. The sheriff's office wouldn't do anything about it. Since that happened though Fluff only left the yard when he was assisting the other dogs with a predator. That's why I feel so disheartened.

There is a guy in Onaga that has about 500 chickens of different breeds and ages. He sells directly, you can pick out whatever chicken you want. Feel free to PM me if you want his contact info.

I think that is the same guy they're talking about who is having the auction soon. I suppose before the auction she could contact him & see if he will sell.

venymae you might check with danz & see if she has any birds for you. It's a little drive but not too bad. It's getting the end of the season for most people & not that many are hatching at this point & are clearing out for winter. I have sold down all of my extra birds at this point & usually don't keep many to grow out either.

I did get a couple of things accomplished yesterday that I had wanted to do but have more to do today. I'm trying to get things repaired & done outside before the weather turns. I will still have to winterize pens but it's still too warm to do that yet.

danz I'm so sorry about Fluff, I can't imagine he would just leave on his own. I don't know why people have to do things like that, hugs to you.

Fingers crossed for you Danz. I hope to heaven no one took your Fluff. You can't write that off, because people can be so mean & others would rather steal than earn something on their own.

I did some checking and found out the local guy who is known to shoot dogs has been out of the area for several days... so he isn't responsible. My daughter pointed out if he was deceased that the turkey buzzards would be circling the area. Morbid thought but true. I see no areas they are all collecting around. So it occurred to me that someone may have seen him and picked him up thinking maybe he had been dumped in the country. He lives in the country and he's healthy so I can't imagine. He was really dirty because we had had the hard rains the night before and he'd been laying in the wet dirt. I've got the local authorities notified and posts on county facebook pages, called the locals I have numbers for. I pray someone has him and will bring him back home.

Either age would work at this point really, though I would prefer young adults as long as my husband was ok with the price tag.

I am sorry about your dog. I used to volunteer at the animal shelter up in Grand Forks, ND and they had a big old lover great Pyrenees who lived at the shelter (not up for adoption, but he helped socialize other animals). I hope you find your big guy, I know dogs are part of the family for lots of people. Did you put out a lost ad on craigslist?

No I didn't. We live in such a rural area that it was kind of pointless. I have lots of networking going on but no solid leads. I have heard about every pyrenees living in a three county area though. This hurts so bad.
I have several juvenile birds that are spoken for but I do have a few that aren't. Most of what I have left are some of my project brahma pullets. I am developing a blue double laced gold brahma and still culling out those that aren't coming out with the right markings. It's a long process I've been working on for some time. These girls will be excellent layers with big eggs. I live about an hour south of Topeka. I know it's a drive. I'm trying to reduce numbers before I have some surgery so I could make you a good deal. Send me a PM if you think you might want some.
I spent a good deal of my day working in the dirt again. Why is it that all my projects turn out to be a lot bigger than I planned? I still have a lot to do. I sure hope all this work is worth it in the end. I put 3 tons of sand in this area with the dirt. We removed two trees and tons of roots so there are some big holes out there. It sure looks better than it did. One volunteer tree was going to get into the power lines and the other one only had a center core that was alive after the drought. There was at least 20 feet on the top that was dead and it wasn't going to live anyway as it was. It sure left a huge hole though. I have a lot of grading to do since it all tilts downhill.
I also moved more birds. I sorted females and males in the last grow out pen that wasn't done. Then I moved all of my young turkeys into the pen the young chickens were in. And caught all guineas that were in with the chickens and moved them to the pen where the turkeys had been. The turkeys were too crowded so now they have more room. Most of the pullets I moved are spoken for and needed to be separated anyway. Just one more bit of progress.
I moved all the rest of my young pheasants out of the building into a pen. I can sex several of them so I guess I need to place an add to sell them.
I also got a load of feed today as well.

Absolutely not! I am a member and they would never do that any way. They have reserved the building for next spring but that doesn't mean it will happen then either. Why would any one even say such a thing? They never changed the website to reflect the sale was cancelled so maybe someone saw that and pictures or information from a previous sale. On their facebook page they have the stop movement order posted. There was a cage bird expo in Lawrence in August but that is entirely different. Also the new letter had the event cancelled in it.
It's sprinkling here this morning.

I have too much to do for it to be getting wet out.
