Consolidated Kansas

Thanks for the welcome, ChikenRookie!

I love love animals and would rather spend time with my furbabies than with most people I know, and besides the basic bills, my money is spent on food and my pets. Currently, I have 4 indoor cats, 3 ferals (one of whom talks at me), 1 very spoiled dog, and 3 fish tanks varying from 5 gallons to 125 gallons. I have zero experience with birds aside from parrots, and a coworker's African Grey for some reason has bonded to me. Hopefully, interacting with him will help decipher the pea and guinea behavior.

As far as plans with the pending flock, I have the high aspirations of turning most if not all of them into basic pets. I'm going to tell the neighbors closer to when I get them (and bring lots of cookies to warm them to the idea!). I plan on handling them a lot and following with BirdRain92's advice to tame them. Ideally I'd get them as day olds from Leggs here, but not sure yet. They would have about a quarter acre of space for their pen and coop, and will free range while I'm able to supervise. I'm looking to keep costs low, but am tossing around the idea of getting a Tuff Shed for the coop for them (I think 20 ish birds in total?)

Any advice for building materials (where to get, lowest cost, etc) and/or raising a mixed flock of peas and guineas will be welcomed gratefully!

I have seen some amazing ideas so far here. Definitely using my XL dog kennel for a brooder with the heating pad cave as a heat source instead of a heat lamp! That was an innovative idea...

This beautiful little guy needs a flock of his own. He is a true Araucana, but the tail labels him as a bit of a throwback. He was hatched from a blue egg by my broody who raised him alone (she abandoned the other eggs for him, so I raised the other 8 chicks that hatched in my incubator). He would make great green egg layers if he were paired with a light brown egg layer or possibly blue if the mom was a white egg layer.

He is about 20 weeks old and medium sized. I'm going to list him on Craigslist tomorrow morning, but I'd rather GIVE him to someone who would let him be a real rooster fathering real chicks. He is really too little to butcher. He is a gentle little bird, but he IS a bit shy.

If anyone knows someone wanting to breed some blue/green/olive egg layers from their existing flock, he's the guy for them. Have them get in touch with me at sharol46 at gmail dot com. He is free to a good home if someone will meet me in Emporia, Osage, Reading, or Admire.

Too bad you are so far away, my father would love a rooster like that! He is gorgeous!

Hi all, I haven't been on for ages it seems like. With the equine rescue and battling being sick it's been a full summer! I was out looking over my flock today and sadly almost All of the Ameraucanas I have that have survived to adulthood are roosters. I'll feel lucky if I have one hen. I'm Very disappointed! @TaraBellaBirds the gorgeous older lavender Ameraucana that we thought would be a hen is most definitely a rooster. I don't think I have any lav Am hens, no Wheaten/Blue wheaten Am hens and I don't know about black. I may have to do a rode trip and see if I can get a couple hens from Somewhere! It's been the same story with my Marans. Tons of Roos and next to No hens. :'(
On a happy note, Price is finally getting his eye feathers in!!!
Also Warrior my skin and bones slaughter pen rescue has put on a Lot of weight and is doing wonderfully! :love

wow your horse is just gorgeous! Love that pattern on his haunch!!! I'm sure he's very happy in his new home!

By the way, I've been away from BYC for awhile due to some health issues that cropped up (nothing serious, just painful). Any chance I missed where someone in Kansas suddenly has Bantam Ameraucana's available? I have emails to everyone on the directories list, and I'll be able to (hopefully) get one this Spring once they're in season again, but didn't want to not check and regret it. The little hen chick/pullet will be in my office with me over the winter, so it will get good care and plenty spoiled, if anyone has one who could use a pampered life. *nudge-nudge, wink-wink*

If you're in Kansas, I'll drive to you.
