Consolidated Kansas

Yeah it was quite a temp swing from the hot day before. Pretty chilly last night. They predicted 49 as the low and it was 47 when I got up this morning. They even changed 80 for tomorrow to 79 degrees. If it will dry up it will be a nice week. Of course I have a ton of things to do this week.
We got down to the low 30's last night. It was a shock for us too, though we did have a cool day a week or so ago (high that day was in the 50's). Of course, today it's back up into the 70's. Gorgeous now, by all accounts, but it was sure chilly early this morning!

4BoyMama - I'm sorry to hear of your loss!

By the way, is there anyone else on here that sews? I haven't quilted in some time but recently decided to make a stashbuster quilt. I decided on a coin quilt 'cuz it is supposed to be quick to come together, and I wanted it to fit my queen sized bed. I am pretty much done cutting the "coins" for the front of the quilt, and I haven't even really made a dent in my fabric stash... I think I'll make the back of my quilt using long pieces left over from the coins... I'm also now thinking I might need to make some quilts as Christmas gifts...

Maybe that will make a dent???

ok, so I'm so sad, just got a call from my hubby at home. I guess the neighbor's dog got our rooster

I'm so sad. We've only had chickens for 4 months now, just got our first egg yesterday! and now "Chuck" is gone. I didn't really even think I liked him that much, but apparently I did. We have not found the body, but feathers in the neighbor's yard and can't find Chuck anywhere. The 7 girls we have are wandering around aimlessly. Sad day.
Anyone know where I can get another tame rooster near the Wichita area? Ours was a silver laced Wyandotte, and was BEAUTIFUL and sweet, well, at least he was friendly and good with my boys.....

thanks!
Ask your neighbor to repay you for the rooster. He should be worth $10 anyway considering the feed and time you put in him. Wish I was closer. I have tons of roosters I would much rather rehome than butcher. Those New Hamp roosters that @HEChicken has are beautiftul birds and very docile. They'd be a great flock rooster.

I wish I had your fabric stash. I plan to make doll clothes for my granddaughters for Christmas. Most of my fabric is upholstery or drapery fabric cause I quit making clothing years ago. Of course I say I plan to make doll clothes but finding the time to sit down and do it is a bit hard.
I got asked earlier today if I would allow a group of 28 senior citizens, mostly using walkers to come out and look at my animals on a Monday afternoon. I am very flattered but I worry about my rough ground and all the trip hazards. I'm just not sure they'd be able to get around here. And my dogs would love the company and might tip someone over. It seems a bit of a liability but I know most of these people are in their 80s and 90s and have a farm background. It might make them happy to see some things to remind them of the past. I just don't want anyone getting hurt. They are all in an assisted living home where they have their own apartments but it's all centered in doors. they have their meals prepared and their rooms cleaned by the staff so they enjoy getting out. I would make sure that I have a liability waver before I'd agree , but aside from that I still worry someone could get hurt.

@chicken danz Yeah that would be my concern too if I were you, I don't think the walkers would work all that well there. I know I even had some problems when I first came after my total knee & I'm not 80 or 90. If you had something to ride them around in that would be different like a golf cart or something they could take turns riding in.

@4BoyMama I wish I could help you out with a rooster but I have sold all of my extras for now. I recently re-homed 19 of them & there were some in there that would have been perfect for you. I agree with danz, that New Hamp rooster would be a very nice rooster to have & I would snatch him up if I were you. I have one of those that now is mostly just a pet because I quit raising them. He doesn't like to fight with the other roosters so he refused to go into the main coop. My Welsummer rooster beat him up pretty bad when he tried so he just hung around down by my pens. I have him in the rooster pen now where I keep extra backup roosters & he seems happy enough in there with company. It's better than sleeping in a dog house, which is where he was living. I imagine the one HEChicken has is younger than the one I have.

We processed one of my extra ducks yesterday & I cooked him in the crockpot all day. I have one more to go hopefully Weds. so those will be gone. These are two I didn't want for my breeding group & we decided to send them to freezer camp. I made my DH help me because I have a hard time skinning birds with my arthritic fingers. He wasn't thrilled about it, but we got it done. It's not one of my favorite things to do either but part of the whole having birds thing.

I have a ? For dog people. My dog had a litter and I have spent a crazy amount getting them wormed and shots at my vet. I'm wondering if I can do all this myself cheaper. I've seen the stuff at the feed stores and such but worry I might do it wrong. My mom dog has worms and my pups have been on wormer I decided to worm her with the same stuff last night just up the dose for her weight. Now I am seeing worms in the puppies poo and the vet is gonna cost another $100 to have them wormed for tape worms. I'm also wondering about my pigs and chickens what kind of wormer is best for them? I really want to keep things as natural as I can but I don't want to comprise the meat and eggs I will be getting from my animals. Can pigs and chickens get fleas? Let me know your suggestions. Thanks

4BoyMama, the Kansas Farm Animal Swap is loaded with roosters free and cheap right now. BYC doesn't allow us to post the link, but if you search that name on Facebook, it will pop right up. Alternately, I have a gorgeous heritage New Hampshire Red rooster I was going to butcher because he is excess, so I could let him go pretty cheap as well. I'm not far from Wichita. Send me a PM if you're interested. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thanks so much for in the info! My husband felt so bad for me, he went online before I got home and just happened to find a young Silver Laced not too far from us that needs a good home. But thanks so much for the offer of your New Hampshire. I looked them up online, beautiful birds! If something doesn't work out with this SLW I will definitely PM you asap.
And yes our neighbor did offer to pay for a new roo for us, she felt very bad about it.

On a happier note, we found our first brown egg today!! Exciting day, we have gotten 2 blues so far, but this is our first brown. So much fun to open up the coop and find a surprise.
Thanks everyone for your help!

Yes absolutely save your money on the vet. If you are seeing worms in the poo that probably means the wormer you used is working to some extent any way.
I buy Pyrentel Pamoate 50 mg. It's actually formulated for human use for pin worms. However it is the exact same ingredient most vets use for all types of worms in puppies,, except it is a brand name and costs probably 10 times as much.. For dogs and other animals the dose is .5ml for each 10 pounds of weight. Just squirt it down their throat. They don't mind the taste at all.
You can also purchase a 5 way vaccine that includes all the puppy shots a vet would give for literally pennies per dose. You give the first dose at 6 weeks and the second should be given at 16 weeks. A lot of vets still give a dose at 3 weeks and then at 5 or 6 weeks. However studies show that it is more effective and there are less side effects to give it at the times I mentioned. So most dogs will be in their new homes long before they need the second dose.
The wormer should be redone within 7-10 days after the first dose.
You can worm the pigs and the chickens with Ivomectin 1% injectable or Fenbendazole.. Worming the chickens can be done with 4cc of Ivermectin injectable per gallon of water for three days. You can also use Fenbendazole in the water for chickens but they hate the taste of it. Remove all other sources of water. Pigs can be done by injection.
Here is how you determine how much wormer to use for pigs and the two options I would use. If you buy Ivermectin for chickens you could just use it.
LENGTH (inches) X GIRTH (inches) / (medium) 11 = weight of pig in pounds (lbs)
Length – measured from between ears to top of tail whilst pig standing.
Girth – measured behind front legs.
The dividing factor of 11 should be used for medium pigs but should be increased to 12 for lean pigs or decreased to 10 for fat pigs.
The pigs weight in kilos can be determined by dividing the weight in pounds by 2.2.
Ivermectin1%: Subcutaneous injection at a rate of 300mcg/kg (1ml per 33kg) Indicated for gastrointestinal round worms (except Trichuris) lice and mites. The product should be injected under the skin in the neck using 16-18 gauge needle ½” in length. Meat withdrawal: 28 days
Fenbendazole 100mg/ml: Oral preparation given at a rate of 5mg/kg (0.5ml per 10kg) divided over 7 days. Indicated for treatment of gastrointestinal round worms (except strongyloides) and lungworms. Can be given with food and/or diluted with water to increase volume. Meat withdrawal: 3days.

Oh holy mother of all! I got lost! I got the dog stuff but lost it at pig stuff lmbo. I'm gonna have to sit down and think this out. Or maybe have my brainy daughter help.
So I only need two products for the worming of my chicken and pigs? Can my ducks drink the same water they all roam around the yard together. I can split them up if I need to. If I can get them all in one shot that would be awesome. The pigs worry me because they are jerks and won't sit still. I may have to get the squeeze shoot out. I have all my animals just running around together. Is that a bad thing? I'm wondering if they are passing worms around. And once I worm what do I do to kill the ones on the ground?
The questions never end. Maybe I'm over thinking!
