Consolidated Kansas

Does anyone know of a poultry farm, or even just a small backyard type operation, near Olathe where a chicken-crazed lady can just sit and hang out with chickens? My backyard is oddly shaped and nowhere near big enough to have some and my neighbors would definitely report me if I tried to be sneaky about it, and my husband is a firm "no" to a house chicken. I've thought about volunteering at Deanna Rose or maybe asking Mahaffie, but I don't think those chickens are particularly fond of people and I don't know if I can specify "please just throw me in the chicken pen every time, thanks!" when you volunteer to help.

I just... want to hang out with some chickens and learn how to care for them hands-on lol. :hit
Shevraeth,
As another option though Danz's is great (I'm out there all the time myself) is myself, I'm in Merriam right off of I-35 and Johnson Drive if you would like to come by just drop me a PM and we can set it up.

The last several days have been a whirlwind and I haven't had time to even get on line. Life is crazy! Attended a beautiful ceremony in Wichita on Friday And learned my DIL will be going to Indiana for her residency. Unfortunately there is no place nearby for my son to transfer to. They are good with that for now anyway.
Went to Gardner yesterday for the second biggest sale I've ever been to there. I had to wait for the one cage I wanted until the last couple hundred. The weather was awful. Cold and misty and the cold wind blowing like mad. I know they lost a ton of buyers because of the weather. I was at the breaking point and as soon as the birds I wanted came up I checked out. I didn't think I'd ever get warm again. Bought a pair of spaulding peafowl for a prayer. Always wanted some even though I am trying to sell out some peafowl. Will I ever learn?
Danz,
I know right I really wanted to get more bantams but they were in the last hundred and by the time Heather and I came into the chick building to warm up (when we ran into you again) it took so long to warm up that Heather and I were simply done so just got the two pairs of bantams but yea that cold was sooo crazy.

I danzsize. That means sell 1 buy 2.:celebrate
Actually I sold several birds this week and only bought 4. But tomorrow I'm adding a few more and next week even more. I really need to sell some. I'm still really dragging from the weekend and getting further and further behind. I measured our rainfall last night and it was 2.25 inches. Then it misted all day. Felt like winter is back with a vengeance.
Well more danzsizing today. I'm going to go pick up some cream legbar cockerels for a breeding project, then head back the other direction and pick up a pair of La Fleche. I have La Fleche chicks but then I can raise my own. More breeding projects! Maybe if I can just concentrate on breeding projects I can quit raising so many birds. I'm so tired. I have two incubators full of just goose eggs. Of course many won't be fertile but I don't remember getting this many so early in the season before. One day I picked up over 20 eggs.

It looks like it is an oriental breed to me but which one I have no idea. My guess is some kind of jungle fowl.

My hang up on these two are the comb. They both have straight combs.

Yeah I agree with Danz that looks like some type of game bird, but I have no clue what breed. The comb looks awfully big for a pullet though to me.

They are def pullets, they are twice the size of all my other chicks. They are actually growing into their combs abit now

People that know me know I'm pretty much of a hermit who enjoys being alone but your visit was so relaxed it was great. Can't wait to meet your son next time. Did he get to eat some of those eggs?
The turkey boys kept fighting and I finally had to put them both in the pen and let them duke it out. Since then they are back to normal and no one is fighting. And luckily neither one of them got too injured.
Today the peafowl decided it was time to start breeding season. They were calling and competing and showing their tails to the ladies. I wonder why those things never happen when someone is here.

Thank you so much, the eggs were great! I usually crack and scramble my eggs right in the pan to save a dish, but for the very first one I went to cook, my son had a full blown freak-out that a fully-formed fluffy chick was going to fall out and burn to death in my pan. We had a nice learning moment about what all needs to happen for a chick to grow, I candled the egg to show him it was chick-free, cracked it into a separate bowl for him to see that it was definitely chick-free, and that was that. He ate most of the eggs himself lol :p

Thank you for offering! So you're right in the city? What's your ordinance like? My chicken fever is so bad I'm trying really hard to get my husband to consider moving to a house with a bigger back yard (ours is like 50'x6' and has a creek right on the other side of the fence, it's so narrow it basically doesn't count as a yard heh)

Correct I am right in the heart of Merriam and as for Ordinance we DON"T have one in regards to chickens/ducks/turkeys they are all just considered another pet so unless there is a so many noise complains there isn't an issues. AND that includes Roosters and Tom Turkeys and Drakes :) I have had one complaint and my animal control officer just blew it off since it was clearly a BS call about someone who had gotten reported for lighting off fireworks...whats funny is that it Was my neibor who also has chickens who reported them so they then tried to report me thinking I was the one who called on them LOL.

Nice! I'll have to keep that in mind while house hunting. :D I would love to find chicken neighbors somewhere!

LOL That is so funny. Maybe it's because they were different colors. Love kids!!!
It's so bitterly cold out! I've been on the go today. I went and got 4 legbar roosters. I really only need one but they were cheap and already around 6 months old. If anyone needs one I'd sure sell one or two. I'm just planning to breed some sapphires for my eating eggs. Probably won't hatch any before fall cause the leghorn pullets are only a few weeks old.
Then I went to get some La Fleche. I thought I was only going to get a rooster and one hen but ended up with a quad. The rooster is older but they said if he wasn't fertile I could trade and then give them a cockerel from what I hatch. These people are working to conserve a couple breeds and have never sold a chicken before. They didn't know what to charge so I gave them a very fair price. Made them happy.
Both groups are now in quarantine pens. I need to worm and dip them all. Most people aren't as proactive as I am on that. I need to get them some straw as well but of course it's all wet after the rains.
