We are near Kansas City. These temperatures have been concerning us as this is our first winter with our small flock. Thankfully everyone has been fine and we are getting at least 1 egg a day!

Silly birds wearing their feather coats. I get 1 to 3 eggs a day. The older BA lays pretty much every day, the other two every other day or so. Looking forward to the others starting again.

We are currently looking to get back into Chickens. I'm looking for recommendations for REALLY BLUE egg layers. So far the Ameraucanas we got from a local breeder have been very disappointing (barely blue and they just started laying!) and the EEs we got from the feed store lay green. Does anyone have a good recommendation or personal experience? I'm in the KC and Manhattan areas (I travel between the two). Thanks!!

Hello! I’m sorry you are disappointed in your current blues. We have an EE that gives blue eggs and we love them. We have a very small flock (3) so I don’t have much experience. However I hear lots about cream legbars laying blue eggs consistently. Might be worth a try. Hopefully more experienced people share some insight too!

Anyone in the South-central Kansas area have extra roosters? I am looking for a large breed (9 lbs+) roo with proven non-aggression. BYM is fine, although I would prefer to know what breeds are included.

I am attempting to create a site-specific landrace, so I have other criteria that are negotiable depending on the situation.

I am breeding for:

Large dual purpose
Non-aggressive to humans and hens
Go broody, good parents
Excellent foragers (mouse hunting would be great!)
Cold and heat hardy
Dark or mottled

My first roo was great to the girls, perfect with predators, but aggressive toward me. I rehomed him. The two replacements were aggressive toward the girls and ended up in the freezer.

Did you ever find a rooster? I have a Black Jersey Giant about 9 weeks old that I'm trying to rehome because I only want hens. He likes to hop onto my lap if I'm sitting and allows pets but not so much while on the ground. Also likes to tap on my boots when I'm walking around but otherwise isn't aggressive other than typical pecking order scenario with the others. He's from Tractor Supply so no clue on parents, etc. I'm in Central KS.

Aggression usually shows up between 16 and 30 weeks, in my experience.

How big is this little guy compared to others his same age? Hoovers usually supplirs TS and they say their Jersey Giants are not bred for size but for egg laying.

He's the only Jersey I have so I can't compare to others. The other chicken in the picture is a Smoky Pearl and the Jersey is now slightly larger. I can get a recent pic (he's a bit bigger now) and measure him after work tonite.
