Last year we had soybeans planted on 100 acres, and all the neighbors around us had soybeans. My free ranging roosters all would take a trip "across the road" after bean harvest to pick up all the dropped soybeans. There were quite a few over there on the ground by where the trucks come out of the field. They tanked up on soybeans every day for a few weeks. These were whole raw soybeans of course. I saw no ill effects, but maybe it didn't do them any good, either.

This year everyone will be planting corn. I'm sure they will love picking that up, too. They always manage to spill some in the road when they dump their grain carts into the trucks.

I can just see it now.... all my free-ranging hens out in the road when some grain truck comes barrelling by and chickens and feathers go flying every-which-way. I'd have scrambled eggs before they lay them!

And I can see that there are definitely things to question about the whole this or that is bad for you thing...I think I just want to get away from any ONE item being the thing upon which we lean, because I think we need ample varied micronutrients. I don't want all of the protein my chickens get to be from one bean grown in one field and all the carbs to be from one grain grown in another...

but that being said, I would also think to some extent the birds ought to be able to have some natural intuition about what they should or shouldn't eat...except for that time mine ate a bunch of styrofoam peanuts...

So, perhaps it fine to eat soy raw sometimes, and just not a major portion of their diet...

...I have to admit, I LOVE a big bowl of steamed soybeans with a pinch of salt and butter...but I know I'm weird.

Chookschick, I have to assume your not feeding this same mix to your babies are you? And if that's the case what do you like to give the youngsters?? I have noticed that blair offers a 32% poultry concentrate but i can't figure out what the ingredients are yet, maybe close to UK??

On a side note what have any of you got started for the garden? so far I have a few snow peas, naga jolokia peppers and six tomato strains going and will do a lil bit of okra too.

Did anyone else get some compost from the City of Lawrence?

Only soy/poultry article I've read. IMO it explains why it's the way to go for big operations despite it's drawbacks. Much less appeal to small producer or hobbyist who cares more about nutrition and overall health than the bottom line.

Does anyone know much about raspberries? I have the red heritage and latham, also the yellow fall gold and black jewel. I read somewhere that black raspberries cannot be planted near the red or yellow. Is this true? Why? If it is true, I'm in deep doo doo. I have them all planted in a long row!

Speaking of deep doo doo, I am LOVING my chicken coop poop. It is working so well in the garden. It has been good already to be able to spread it around near some of my plantings. I hate cleaning the coop, but I love working that stuff into the garden!

I'm still waiting for my wonderful neighbor to come and plow my plot this year. He's got a huge tractor thing with a dangerous looking tine-thingey. Takes him about 2 minutes to get the job done, and I'm in business.
This year I'm growing Brandywine tomatoes, some kind of winter squash (hubbard?), and I don't remember what else. It's a small garden,but I get a kick out of growing my own vegetables. And I want to plant blueberry bushes this year, since I am always buying them.
There's tons of chicken coop poop sitting on top of the bed, just waiting to be churned into the dirt.

Took the chicks to visit the great outdoors for the first time today, wish I'd had a camera every one of them stood there like...

wow. Had to move them out while I hosed out their brooder, apparently a spider nest must have just hatched in there cause there were baby spiders everywhere. Not kidding, maybe a hundred of them all about the size of deer ticks crawling the walls.

The chicks were having a great time trying to eat them all but I wasn't sure if the spiders would make them sick. Does anybody know?
