Consolidated Kansas

Well looks like I just had my first predator kill. Lost lil" #2 of my Coturnix Quail some time in the middle of the night. Appears by the track's to be a Cat. Looks like it's time for another good ole Cat killing party. Full body traps are out, and set, .22 rifle is load and ready for any and all Cat's I see

I agree...don't post them. I don't blame you for wanting to get rid of what killed your bird, but it's really not needed to post pictures here ......I don't post pictures of the predators I take care of.

and in other news....this cold weather SUX!! To make it worse my month old ducklings are awol. The chicks are all hunkered down with their mamas though.

WOW its amazing how that ticks people off! Guess I will kill my birds off before the cats do and then post those picks that seems to be ok. Guessing this is not the place for me either.

Runners are far more upright, but it may not be as obvious in hatchery ducklings. I would definitely keep drakes down to a minimum, but I think it's important to have one. Ducks all get along fine, regardless of breed. I've heard mixed opinions on ducklings being okay with medicated starter, but I think an all-purpose like Manna Pro Trip-L-Duty or Flock Raiser is fine, as they're designed for multi-fowl flocks.

I'm not sure about breed ID-ing via staff- I'd be very leery...there are pics of ducklings on some threads about ducklings at TSC and O's last month- you might just take a pic and then we can ID them.

The poultry lady at Orschlen's told me they don't pay her enough to sex thousands of chicks every year. I can't blame her. I think I've decided on the breeds I want, runner, Welsh Harlequins and a kahki campbell. I'm thinking 3-4 in all. I also read where they recomend having a pair of adult geese in with your ducks to ward off predators. The hatchery choice bunch they have at O's now are yellow with a little pale brown/grey, and look like they have a puff on the top of their heads. I'd sure like to know what they are. I read on a hatchery site to start ducklings out on un-medicated crumbles then switch to flock raiser or duck feed around the 14th week (I think), pellets preferred.

If you listen carefully you may here some of them saying 'I taut I Taw a Putty Tat'. Sorry for your loss.

Will you be at the TSC swap meet Sunday?

Yep I sure will. I will most likely be there around 9am.
