Consolidated Kansas

Wish we had. We got the thunderstorm but any rain that fell from it evaporated long before it hit the ground. I'm starting to really worry about next year's hay now. Our prairie hay is hanging in there but the brome is so brown, dry and crinkly that I'm worried its actually going to die if we don't get rain soon. Like everyone else we got a fraction of the bales this year that is "average" but if it actually dies off altogether we'll get even less next year.

TRAUMA this morning!

I decided to let girls go out of their coop today to free range in my garden - mostly cause the grasshoppers are going crazy - and i am tired of catching em for the girls

everyone did good - and when they were done - it was pretty easy to get everyone back into the yard - especially since i have them trained with a bell for treats - ring the bell - they all run in

except for a couple that couldnt figure out how where the gate was to get back in ...

finally get them all in - do a headcount - and one of my lil EE is gone. she had been in a corner of the fence - the fence between me a nd my neighbor with the two huge dogs... i didnt realize that there was a small chicken sized hole in the fence - luckily the dogs were in their house still - i tried to knock and warn them to let me in the yard and keep the dogs in for afew - but no one answered (late sleepers i guess) sooo i'm sitting there with corn - trying to entice her back thru the fence - allmorning - but of course the bugs are better over there - then i finally get her w/in about a foot fo the hole - and the dogs come - so then she is freaking out and they got her! my eldest is running to ask them to get their dogs - and i am screaming at the dogs to try to get them off of her - i couldnt get over that fenceif i tried - and she looked gone... but right after the dogs left - she gets up and walks around - i think she was actually smart enough to play dead!

so far - a few lil scratches and a very scared bird - but no serious damage

talk about a lot of adrenalin -

luckily she appears okay - going to put some blukote on her when i can catch her - but dont want to stress her out by chasing her

and of course the grasshopper population is lower but not gone

oooooooooooo - its raining - i am sooooooo going to dance in it!

everyone is getting this rain but us! I tell you, wichita always gets the rain, and we must live in some kind of weird pocket where we never get it. We watched it rain a few miles off from us.

Naughty- sorry about your hen, and i sure hope she ends up being fine. I would have freaked out over that, too!

Katy glad you got your rain, too!! I there is more in store for all of us!

West Wichita got a little shower yesterday evening but no joy here in the south end until today. Might (big word) get a thunder storm Monday also. Keep Praying!

We got about an inch and a half where I live midway between Emporia and Admire. It was really a nice rain (some wind, but nothing damaging). I had to replace the shavings in the little girls' tractor though. It got soaked (I didn't close the window

Oh well, it was worth it to have a cooler night for them.

WHEN will this break for good?

Loralee,
I am not questioning your ability but since this is your first time build, I am wondering if you will be able to do the roof angles. They are a task for sure. If you have a miter saw you might be able to execute them but if you don't, I worry. There is some info on the internet to help if you research it. As far as your run overhang, as long as you have at least 6 foot clearance for your head you should be fine. Assuming of course that you aren't over 6 feet tall.
As far as storage goes, I keep some big trash barrels with lids of course out by the houses that I store feed and supplies in. It saves a lot of running back and forth.
