ChickenDanz, I'm sorry to hear about your roo. I've never seen anything like that, thank goodness.

Hawkeye, with any flock, there are bound to be a few losses. In our first few months, we lost two out of nine chickens and never did find out what it was. My best guess at this point is that it was something genetic or already past the contagious stage by the time we added those chickens to the rest of the flock (the third chicken of that batch is fine). Please don't let that discourage you from raising chickens. They are beautiful, curious creatures who are a lot of fun.

I'm envying you your coop building. We retrofitted my niece's old playhouse. It's adorable, works just fine, and was quite inexpensive. However, there are many things we'd do differently if we were building from scratch. I'm impressed with what you're doing and it's going to be a great home for your chickens.

Thanks for the condolences. It was quite a sickening thing. I'm not squeamish at all, but I just felt sick that there wasn't more that I could do. I'm a big softy when it comes to animals and thank God I've got a man who is the same.
I have to cry when I loose one of my adult chickens. I guess I've come to expect chick losses now and then, but the ones I've chosen to keep and raise are a different matter.
Loralee, you will love your chickens. They are so fun to watch. When I got my first 50 chicks after many years of not having any, I literally sat inside the brooder house for hours just watching them and laughing at some of the funny things they do. I still chuckle when I watch a hen run across the yard and look like she is going to fall on her face; Or watch a group of them chase the one that has found some treasure even if it is a blade of grass. I love their excitement when they find a good spot with bugs or food.
I love letting my tiny little granddaughters touch them and squeal in excitement.
You can't buy better entertainment, unless maybe it would be my ducks who are adorable clowns.

Thanks guys.. hopefully my chicks will be healthy and I won't be on here every few minutes with a crazy stressed out posting! LOL

I'm starting to lose some steam on the chicken coop simply because the heat is relentless and unending. I just wish I could have one good 80 degree day where I could work all day long. Panting and sweating the whole time I'm working is very draining, not to mention curbs the enthusiasm. I ran errands today and went to several flooring centers for remanent pieces of vinyl. No luck. Well.. unless I want to pay upwards of $45. Sutherlands had a 9X6 for $23 and I coudl have just cried- I'm off by 3 feet. I need 8X8 or larger. I'm going to call some more places and see what they've got. My two little kids were drained and throwing a tantrum by the middle of my 'quest'. I was near a tantrum myself, too! LOL!!!

The porch paint seems a little thin to cover well enough. But I suppose I could put on more coats and see if it looks good.

On the vents. We used one of the square covered ones that go on the roof in a cut out. I can tell you if I was doing it again I would use the round ones that spin in the wind. I am sure the square is better than nothing but there seems to be no air flow in the summer.

Try Farha's. They are on Harry between Seneca and Mclean. They seem pretty reasonable every time I'm in there.

Thanks for the idea!! I'll give them a call! I went to Jabara's and Lowes, Home Depot and Sutherlands. Figure on calling and not driving. Too hot for all the in and out and the little ones crying on the floor after two stores was real fun.

Hi, I'm "new" to the forum. Have been reading it for months and thoroughly enjoying it! So cool to see I'm not the only crazy one for chickens. I've filled out my "My Page" so I don't have to type my whole story here. Can't figure out where I need to go to give myself a picture (I think it's called an avatar?). Anyway, I've put the horses out to pasture until it cools down some. We're melting here in Wamego! So far my chickens have been surviving, although panting a lot. They are free during the day and stay in the barn where it's the coolest during the heat of the day. Also, since my chickens have started laying (woohoo! at 4 mos. old!) I really want some of that special chicken feed that Chookschick talks about. I'm almost done with a bag of grower feed and don't want to buy another one. So if there is a batch on order please let me know. Thanks so much, I really enjoy reading about everyone's experiences!
