Consolidated Kansas

Awesome. I've never been to a poultry show. Wish it wasn't a gazillion miles from here.
I'm trying to get enough energy to go out and get to work.
It's one of those days I don't want to move.

just got home from church and eating lunch.. going to relax a bit and then get back to work! We had a Little Caesars open up in a little town near us- we're excited! So we brought that home for lunch. OH- I did pick up 4 bales of straw from a farm down the road from us. Plan on using that around the bottom of the coop to help as a wind break this winter and hopefully offer more protection from rain, sleet, etc. If we get any of that. It was so dry, maybe we'll just get wind and cold.

Ivy, yeah, the wind is insane the last few days. But it wasn't too bad yesterday. Hope you get something figured out soon for a wind break. I'm going to have too many birds, or I'd want an OE! LOL! They are so cute! I just hope I can control myself when I go get what was hatched for me.

Danz, you'll have to post a pic of your pump, sounds really cool! I'm with Justin-- if I get around to building a pond, I'll be asking you!

Did you get your turkeys moved yet? How big are they now?

I about have the pen about ready but haven't moved the turkeys yet. I really wish I had more areas with shade. I can't afford to put roofs on all my pens. I am second guessing myself and wondering if I should move the guineas to the pen I got ready. I don't have a shelter for them yet. I think I will use a fiberglass tank on its side.

I'm beat. I got the turkeys moved to their new pen. Then I moved the baby ducks out to the old turkey pen after I cleaned it up. got he heat lamp going and they are cuddling. Hope it is warm enough for them. I had 3 more hatch today but they are still in the hatcher. I'll see how the others do first.
I got another kennel sat up and got it covered with netting for the guineas I have in the brooder. Didn't have a house so I took a big old horse trough and turned it on it's side for at least some place to go in cool weather. I didn't get them moved out there. I ran out of time. Maybe I'll find time tomorrow.
DH has been working on the wood on the sides of the Mandarin pen and it looks awesome. I hope the Mandarins appreciate it as much as I do.

I finally got a new timer for my new chicken door. I ordered the timer door from Fleming, and I really like the door. It is sturdy and well built and the lift mechanism is completely enclosed so it won't get tangled up. The timer they included with it was a peice of something smelly. It lost (or gained, depending on its mood) 3 hours a day. Completely unacceptable. I ended up plugging the door into my light timer so that the girls wouldn't get locked in all day by the stupid timer.

Since I agreed to do this long-term (probably at least until March) substitute job (for a teacher who became unexpectedly, seriously ill), I have to leave before the sun is up and I'm not comfortable letting them out in the dark. It was rather expensive, but well worth it. I got to Orschlen's in Topeka yesterday and got a heavy duty timer with a cover that will keep the mechanism fairly clean. So far so good. It has 15 minute increments, so I can bump the time back and forward as the sun changes position. While I was there I picked up a Flock Block for the winter for them. Last winter during the blizzards, the Flock Blocks were much appreciated by the shut ins.

I've been retired for 4+ years, so going to school every day is exhausting. We have parent teacher conferences Wednesday night and Thursday and then Friday is a meeting day for teachers, but subs don't have to go to those. Maybe Friday I can get caught up reading these forums. At least I hope so.

I think I would have sent that original timer back and asked for a replacement. Man that stinks when you pay so much and something doesn't work right. I can't imagine going back to work after being retired. I know a lot of people do but I just don't have time for what goes on every day, let alone trying to work.

I did, but they will probably send the same kind I got the first time, and it is timer just for lights. It says in the instructions for the door that it requires a heavy duty timer (not just one for lights). I'll use the one they send me for a timer for lights when we are gone.

They were nice about the replacement, but it is a really cheapo to include with something as important as a door that lets chickens in and out.

Danz, that's great that you have almost got everyone moved to where you want them. Hope the turkeys and ducks like their new home. I want to see a picture of your new duck enclosure! I bet it looks great!

Sharol, I'm glad that your door is working and that you are happy with it. That is really kind of crappy of them for sending a light weight timer. Interesting, I would have thought that if you bought the whole thing, they would have something that should work well. I bet you paid enough for it that they should have reconsidered. I hope the new timer works out for you. Sounds like you are pretty busy teaching now, then if you are filling in for someone that will be gone a long while. Hopefully they are back by the end of the school year?

It's cold today! And we have a small chance of rain, too. It actually looks like it might just rain. Maybe. The sky is kind of overcast and looks like something might come in. We'll see! My chicks are growing tails! They are looking so cute! And my barred rocks are getting white spots in their feathers! They aren't solid black anymore. Are their feathers falling out and getting news ones?? I don't see any feathers in the brooder?? How are they changing color like that??
