Consolidated Kansas

Thanks ladies. I just decided to keep the 2 new ones inside. Well, actually, my mom volunteered to take them home and raise them in her spare room. She said she was doing it so they could have quiet to recover but think she just wanted the chicks so she could hold them all day! I really wanted the injured one to have some quiet to heal and with 2 small children they would have gotten no quiet or rest. I am getting ready to head to the store and get some blue kote because the other chick keeps trying to peck the injury. I can't wait to go over and see them.

So we're going to try to winter in a hoop tractor. I still have my garden shed as a back up plan, but design one (my bro's) came apart at the joints lol. So I am rebuilding it with a different design. Lets call this chicken pro vs joe... and I'm the joe. PVC glue setting. Measurements made. Now I have to cut some timber. This is all very new for me. I am largely an academic nerd/geek and am teaching myself everything as I go regarding construction and home maintenance.

Essentially I'm determined to pass on some valuable skills to my son but first i have to learn them

That's so funny!

Good luck with your building skills.
I intended to spend the day building today and so far all I've done is clean and move furniture in one room.

well, my hatch went south. Sigh. Ah well. The lady that was hatching my silkie eggs- she only had ONE chick make it out of all the eggs she set. One other one hatched and then quickly died. I'm not going to just buy one chick, because if they don't integrate well with my chicks now- I was hoping for 3 chicks. She said she has someone that will buy it if I don't, so I gave it up. Actually, it's probably just as well since I really wanted a Blue or Black silkie anyway. And I think we'll just wait till spring and brood them by themselves at that time. If I tried again right now, it will put my current babies and new babies too far apart and I don't want babies in the winter by themselves. These were Lavender in color and I wasn't totally in love with them, but thought it might be unique.

Danz, think you can get a picture of your black roo and hen so I can see what they look like? I'm wishy washy about the black... thinking I really want Blue instead. BUT-- can you get blue out of a Black?? I know you can get black out of a Blue. I don't want anything until Spring now. I have whites right now-- I have no clue if I have pullets or roos- I'm hoping I have a pair. Can you get blue by crossing a white and Black? I have no idea how this works! LOL

Nothing got done on my coop yesterday. Ended up cleaning house and then playing with my horses before we had out company and bonfire outside. The kids had fun riding and messing with them, too. I'd really like to go riding again today! Sigh.

Just got home from town. My Mom wasn't doing well today but still wanted to go to church.
I'm going to try to put wire on the Mandarin pen this afternoon.
Loralee, I'll try to remember to grab my camera and take some pics of the black silkies. I would think You could get blue or splash chicks by crossing Black and white. I'm not sure. I've not seen a blue silkie myself, but I know they exist.

You will not get blue by crossing black and white. If you have a black and a splash you can hatch all blue. Here is a chart so you can see what you need to get what you want. I hope it helps.
Bue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash
Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Blue X Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Black X Black = 100% Black
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash
Splash X Black = 100% Blue

Here is the pics of a couple of my blacks. First pic is of my roo. He just wanted to show his behind. I couldn't see in the screen of the camera because the sun was too bright so it isn't centered well. Second is one of my hens.

Wow, talk about the genetically genius you are! LOL (I'm the challenged) Okay, one more question, so is it Roo X Hen? Or is it Hen X Roo?

What color do you have?
