Consolidated Kansas

Was gonna go see the college daughter at KSU then take in the swap, but she walked through the bank doors 1/2 hour ago to surprise us.

I hatched out 2 out of a dozen eggs. one lived, & so I have one very friendly 4 month delaware rooster for whom I would like to find a harem.

I did find out from a lady in Dighton,ks that it's the swap mentioned earlier at Tractor Supply. Big reason she is going is she has many birds to deliver in that area & she's just going to meet them at the swap; so I'm not sure how many birds will be there. I know the swap in Dodge City had no Delaware.

Yippee!! I got the inside done and now I'm ready to paint it and lay down the vinyl! Finally. Wow, I wasn't sure I'd get there today. All the electrical is done, outlets in, etc. Tomorrow my plumber comes over and trenches my line. Now I just need the siding on! I made my last set of doors today, too! Now it's just the pop door left to make.

Wow! you really accomplished a lot today. I got nothing done. I did get shavings in the mandarin duck nest boxes. Dh left to get some more fittings and just got back. Tomorrow with luck maybe I'll have the filter operating right and can actually move those birds!
I had company this afternoon and made a meager $25 but it was ok. I spent a good deal of my afternoon cleaning out cabinets. I had a stinking rodent move indoors and I was cleaning all the stuff he could have walked on. Creeps me out. I hate mice and they have been crazy this fall. My bar bait worked though cause I also found him deceased.

Wow Hawkeye, you got a lot more done today than I did, it wasn't a very productive day for me. My hen is doing so much better though & I let her go back into the coop. The rooster is still rattling some, but he doesn't act like he's feeling bad, he's been running around all day. None of the other chickens seem sick, so hopefully it will be confined to just these two. They really have been liking that vitamin water though, so maybe it will give them all a boost. Hopefully it was just the stress of new surroundings & that cold snap that brought it on. The hen has been running around this afternoon since I let her out of the cage & she seems to be feeling much more like herself. I'm so happy because I was worried when I found her like that yesterday. I can't wait to see your coop all finished & you need to have a party when you're done to celebrate!

I'm not postitive if there is one this weekend but, if there is it will be in the TSC parking lot east of town on 24 hwy, I'm not sure what hours it runs but I know it's a pretty small swap. There are a few others I know of in eastern ks if you need more info but I think they're pretty much done until mid march. I don't know where you're located but there are auctions in Yates Center, Gardner and Clay Center and Swaps in Overbrook, Manhattan, and Topeka.

Lol danz don't leave your coat laying around

Trish, soooooo glad that your hen and roo are doing better! I bet it was the sudden turn of weather along with being caught in the drizzle. Heck, a person could have gotten sick from that. What is this vitamin water you have?? I am stocking up on everything people talk about-- so I have electrolytes and duramycin. This sounds like something I need to know about! Especially since I'll be transferring everyone out to the coop and I'm hoping everyone does well. But if not, I want to be prepared!

Danz, I'm with Rittert on this one... check your coat pockets! LOL!! I noticed mice in the garage, so I set up a bunch of bait. They have been dropping like flies and now I'm finding little bodies everywhere. I love bait- my mice are too sneaky for traps. I've had traps set for weeks now and not ONE mouse! I finally gave up and put the bait out about two weeks ago. Seeing results. Hope you get your filter done tomorrow! Good luck!

Well, when I say I got the inside done, I don't mean I have the roosts put up. I need to paint and lay down the vinyl and then I can set up the roosts and put the dividers into the nest boxes. But I want the vinyl in the boxes too- and I'm going to put the dividers up on top of the vinyl. But seriously... I'm so CLOSE now!! eek!! I guess I can go buy the paint tomorrow! Going to paint the inside a sunny yellow ORANGE! hehe!!

Mice. Ick.

When we built our shop it was soon over run with mice....I mean LOTS of mice. I built bait boxes, bought tons of bait and they ate it like crazy, found dead mice everywhere, but the mice kept coming. The shop smelled like a stinking mouse toilet or something.

We decided we needed cats. We adopted a couple from the local shelter, and a stray showed up to stay, too.

No more mice.

The cats live in the shop, but they venture to the barn and all around the yard. This morning I was in the house and I heard the guineas sound the alarm.

I figured I better go check it out. What I saw was the mama cat had just caught a mouse. She must have pounced on it or something, and that was what tripped the alarm on the guineas. Mama cat promptly brought the mouse over and one of her half grown kittens immediately took it as she dropped it in front of him.

Hawkeye, well it's Durvet Vitamins & Electrolytes, it's all that Orschelyn's had in the way of that sort of thing to give chickens. I was looking for Vet RX & they didn't have it. I have ordered some now & it's on it's way, so next time I will have that for colds or whatever, but when you have a really sick chicken is not the time to have to order something or drive 35 or 40 miles to get it either. I wanted something in addition to the Tylan to help boost their immune system since they obviously got stressed with being re-located to my place, being integrated into a new flock, & the darned weather. I was really aggravated that Orschelyn's in Ark City has very little in the way of meds for chickens, they cater to the horse owners the most. As many people as there are in this area with chickens they really need to have more in stock for chickens & I told them that. They sell chickens, so they should have the stuff to take care of them after they sell them. I'm also trying to get things stocked up that I read on here, but can't get it all at once. I had the Tylan left over from a hen I had to treat this summer for an eye problem. I hate to give antibiotics, but unless you have a Vet who treats chickens & we don't & you want to spend the money taking them there, I would rather give them & see if it helps rather than wait & let the chicken get worse. I read on BYC on another thread that experienced breeders just don't treat respiratory problems at all & immediately cull the bird. Well I don't happen to think chickens are just a throw-a-way thing, that as soon as they get an illness of any sort you just get rid of them. Would you do that with your dog or your cat? No, I don't think so. If you have a 100 or so chickens & have extras then maybe you could do that, but when you have a limited number & they're perfectly good chickens why would you do that?

IVY, yes that is why we have cats here, they're wonderful mousers. We rarely have a problem with them & they even catch moles for us. Right now we have a few too many cats, but things happen to them all the time, so the population fluctuates. We have a neighbor who is a cat hater & I know that she has trapped & destroyed some of our cats. I had to tell her awhile back the reason we have cats in the first place & honestly she probably doesn't have mice either due to our cats if she would think about it.
