I generally try to cut the cord as close to the shell as I can when that happens, just because the pulling can cause them to be disemboweled...and that's horrific.

It will be much better in the morning.

If you have any vetericyn, I'd spray that on the chick's umbilical.

Okay, we worked on two sides of the siding. We bought the pre-primered masonite siding at Lowes. We didn't need much! We painted it two coats before we nailed it on. So all we have to do is touch ups-- if needed. It's coming along, but not quick enough! Boooo on it raining for the next two days! I mean, yeah, I know we need this rain, but trying to get work done here.

I'm wondering if it doesn't rain too hard today, if I can go ahead and lay in the vinyl floor and get it cut and situated. I don't know though. We'll see.

You know I'm not sure how long it is before the babies leave. I think it is shortly after they hatch like a day or two. Things you can't see are grooves cut on the front panel inside the nest box that let the babies get their toe nails in and climb out. I built these to exact specs of every reference I could find. In nature they nest in hollow trees so the rough texture allows them to climb out. The babies actually have to drop and fall a couple feet to start their metabolism. If you hatch them yourself you literally have to drop them on the floor. I am thinking first time out, I will let the Mom's hatch them but may try to brooder them after that. I don't want to loose any babies if I can help it.
Loralee your coop looks so nice. Isn't it great to be that close to completion!
Canchaser, how's your duck doing today? Sorry I missed your last post last night. I have some duck eggs ready to go into the hatcher on Wednesday.
Rittert, I hatched well over 2000 birds this year. I am addicted to it. My biggest problem with that is I don't have time to give the individual attention to all the babies and watch them for any little signs of distress, so consequently I loose some babies. Also there's always overcrowding issues until I get them all sold. Most have sold when they are over brooder age. I am hoping this coming spring I'll be able to offer all purebred chicks and that will help me sell them as new hatches with luck.

We now have 4 baby ducks! They r doing well. We did lose one last night that had pipped butnever broke through the membrane. I'm not sure if it's something I did or it had something wrong with it anyway. All I know is last night I could hear and this morning it's dead.

Sometimes that just happens. If a bird doesn't hatch that often means that it was weak and wouldn't thrive in the first place. You didn't say what kind of incubator you have. Let me know and I might be able to make a suggestion or two how to improve it for hatching. Or not! I am always glad to help as much as I can. Renee (Chooks) is also very skilled at hatching and might be able to help.

Yep they are one and the same as far as design. Woodies and Mandies are the only two species of this kind in the world. They are very much the same but won't interbreed. Thank goodness, cause I like them both, but the Mandarins IMO are much prettier.
