You know I'm not sure how long it is before the babies leave. I think it is shortly after they hatch like a day or two. Things you can't see are grooves cut on the front panel inside the nest box that let the babies get their toe nails in and climb out. I built these to exact specs of every reference I could find. In nature they nest in hollow trees so the rough texture allows them to climb out. The babies actually have to drop and fall a couple feet to start their metabolism. If you hatch them yourself you literally have to drop them on the floor. I am thinking first time out, I will let the Mom's hatch them but may try to brooder them after that. I don't want to loose any babies if I can help it.
Loralee your coop looks so nice. Isn't it great to be that close to completion!
Canchaser, how's your duck doing today? Sorry I missed your last post last night. I have some duck eggs ready to go into the hatcher on Wednesday.
Rittert, I hatched well over 2000 birds this year. I am addicted to it. My biggest problem with that is I don't have time to give the individual attention to all the babies and watch them for any little signs of distress, so consequently I loose some babies. Also there's always overcrowding issues until I get them all sold. Most have sold when they are over brooder age. I am hoping this coming spring I'll be able to offer all purebred chicks and that will help me sell them as new hatches with luck.
