Consolidated Kansas

I was thinking more of injectable Tylan. Do they make that as well? I have come up with ingredients to make mass amounts of vetRX, It is going to cost me a chunk initially but I think I can mix my own and save a lot of dollars, especially if more of these birds get colds. The nice thing about these ingredients is they are all approved for human use so I could safely use them for whatever I need to treat.

That's great. I can get that in one day's turnaround. I'm going to call Bluestem in Emporia tomorrow to see if they have tylan there. If my DH decides to run over there for other things I can have him pick me some up. If not I'll order it from Valley Vet.

Danz, oh no! So sorry about your roosters today!

I wonder what got your Polish-- a cold?? I hope your other rooster pulls through, too. I went out to check on my chicks... and guess what?!! I heard a few of them sneezing!!! What the heck?? That just started! They are in a nice clean coop- and their home should be perfect for them. No build up of amonia, nothing. I guess I'll be adding that VetRX to their water. My first few months of having chickens aren't going very well at ALL. I wonder how the heck my dad did this. I would totally do the injectible Tylan, too. If you think it's life and death serious, you might even try injecting into the sinus as a last ditch. Good luck and I hope your rooster is doing no worse tomorrow.

We got back back from the kid's x-mas program. As usual, it was adorable and they were perfect.

I don't think the polish had a cold. I saw no signs of a cold in any of them. I am thinking heart attack or something. He was fine 30 minutes earlier. As long as no others end up sick I won't worry about it too much. I have too many roosters anyway but I just have to feel safe it isn't anything contageous. I'll just watch them carefully over the next several days. The bantam polish have their own house and pen so they aren't exposed to the general bird population.
All these problems everyone is having has got to be these weather extremes. I went through 2 winters and 2 summers with absolutely nothing in the way of a cold and now I have several that have colds. I haven't brought in any new stock from anywhere so I know it hasn't been brought in by birds.
My daughter called today saying one of her 7 week old chicks was doing very poorly today. It didn't sound good. Sounded like the bird was nearly gone. I sent her out after pedialite, polyvisol, and she had some baytril there that she had gotten to treat her cat for a urinary infection. She didn't have injectable so she crushed a very small amount and dropper fed the chick with the mixture of the three. The bird wouldn't eat or drink on it's own so I'm not sure if it will make it or not. Again this was a bird she hatched herself from her own chickens and NO ONE brings animals on her property without health certificates. She couldn't find any evidence of anything wrong. I did question her and she has these chicks in a small enclosed area. I had her check it for moisture. She called back and said it was pretty wet in there. She is adamant about bleaching out waterers and putting out clean shavings, but I suspect since it is a much warmer climate (Austin, TX) there might have been some mold forming. That will kill a young bird in a hurry.
Now if I could only diagnose my own problems!
So Hawkeye, how was the Christmas program?
DH just came in and said it is sleeting outside. Ugh!

Duh! Loralee I just reread your post. I see you already commented on the Christmas program. My daughter just called and said her chicken is doing much better.

I use some of those that you can get that are rectangular for my Marans and Orps, mounted to the wall with duct tape across the bottom 4 inches of the opening to keep the litter from falling out. I mount them so the top of the crate is at least 2 or 3 inches lower than the roosts so it's not as desirable a place to sit. I generally only mount them a few inches off the floor so it's just a hop up...so if someone goes broody she can sit on eggs in one and I won't have to move her to keep the chicks from falling a long distance.

I am closer, but I don't have any broody hens to sell. I'm pretty well sold down for the winter.

I haven't any broody hens, but I have Silkie chicks. You can't go wrong with Silkies for broodies...I have one who went broody 5 times this year so far.

Just caught up on the rest of the thread- soooooo sorry about the losses and illnesses. It's no fun at all to have stuff going on like that, and I'm hoping we'll have a mild winter so it's less than usual. Perhaps this is it and you'll have no more trouble for the rest of the season! Be careful about injectible Tylan. It causes necrosis in the tissue over time, and the effect is never reversed. Your birds will have little spots in the breast with atrophied tissue that gets worse over time. This is only in poultry, and I'm not certain what the mechanism is, but they say it's best not to inject with chickens.

I know that the forum is working on updates and improvements that will be rolled out when complete- that's the way they usually do it so it doesn't keep us confused constantly. Nifty has polled the BYC population to see what they are interested in for improvements, then suddenly at some point, they give us a surprise and make improvements! Wheee!

I've been working on a new site, too- it's wicked creepy how many of us thin very much alike.

So I learned something. I've had Seramas in the house and listened to them crow but have never had a full grown rooster crowing at 6:00 AM on 25 feet from my head! Not good! The other few times I've had LF roosters in here they were too weak to crow. Holy crap that's a brutal thing to wake to! The roo seems to be doing pretty good. He is eating and drinking. He doesn't like the cats checking him out though. I find that humorous. They run around outside with each other and don't pay any attention. But put a rooster in the house and all the sudden the cats are mega curious and the rooster gets all excited about them being around. If I could ask them, "What's the difference?"

Oh Renee, that's exciting they are working on the site!

Can't wait to see what they have coming! Yes, I don't know whats up with the sneezes! Now my little chicks have it in their coop!!? I'm upset about that. I sure hope they snap out of it quickly. They haven't been around my silkies-- nor any other bird. So I have no idea what they could have. Don't they have to come in contact with someone to get sick?? No one's even been over here. Sigh.

Danz, the christmas program was pretty good last night. My little ones behaved perfectly and stood on those risers beautiful and sang along like they were supposed to. There were other kids however, that were BAAAAD. They kept jumping off the risers and trying to run around the stage. I understand these kids are all under 5 yrs old, but I've taught my kids better than that. There might be a quick trip to the bathroom if they listen.

Anyway, these other kids were yelling and jumping around and the teachers were trying to stay out of the way so they didn't ruin the program. Plus, in the past, when they've taken a kid off stage, the kid wailed and threw a fit and then the parents got MAD that their kid was taken off-stage. It's sometimes a no win situation with the parents, because they are idiots! LOL But mine did great and my little girl was dressed as an angle with a silver tinsel halo and white wings and my little boy was dressed as a shepherd with a cute piece of cloth on his head and a 'headband' tied around to keep it on with a long robe. They were adorable.
So how is your roo this morning? I hope he is no worse! I'm glad that your daughters chick is better, too.
