Speaking of chick dust.. I am trying to determine where we will keep the baby chicks when they arrive in march. How much dust will 4 babies create? Too much to keep in the house?

LN2008-Congratulations on your first egg. I'm sure you are excited about it. I'm always extra excited any time I have a new pullet that lays her first egg.

It's a black ameraucana. So far it is the only one that has hatched. The other eggs haven't even pipped yet. I actually don't think they are due to hatch until tonight. I sure hope I get more than one out of a dozen eggs! Patience, Susie, patience! It's so hard to wait. This chick looks nice and healthy. I have one rosecomb egg in there. I haven't candled it in about a week, but it looked good then. I kind of expected it to be the first to hatch, but since it has not, I hope it hasn't stopped growing or something.

Hey sis! I beat you to the first hatch of the season. I'll bet you didn't even know we were in a race. I guess we weren't but I just thought I'd let ya know!

Danz-I'll bet the dogs did enjoy the meal you made for them. Do you cook the chicken and give them bones and all? I've always heard dogs shouldn't get cooked chicken bones. I was reading on here about a lady that would take her extra roosters that she couldn't get rid of and would skin them and then give them raw and whole to the dogs. Everyone said it is much healthier for a dog to eat raw chicken than to eat cooked chicken bones. I have no idea why that would be. Maybe the bones get more brittle or something.

I know my dogs have eaten cooked chicken bones, but I don't give them that. They take it away from the barn cats sometimes. It's kind of funny. They come in and give a big "WOOF" and scare the cats away and grab the chicken and take off like a theif on the run, like they know they aren't supposed to do that.

tweety, I know that everybody has their own setup for a brooder, but I have an oval livestock water tank that I use for mine. I put pine shavings in the bottom of it & I have a clamp type of lamp that I use for heat. I had some old heavy screen type of things that I had laying around that fit perfectly over the top to keep them from flying out when they get bigger. I keep mine in my garage because they do get to smelling eventually. I add pine shavings a little at a time & clean it out when it gets too bad. You can fashion a brooder from a host of different things, but make sure it's not flammable due to the lamp & the shavings, people have had fires started that way. At any rate, you can make one fairly easily with things you find or if you're handy you can make a nicer one.

Danz, I have been cleaning out just "stuff" for 2 years now at my place. That sounds awful, but I had accumulated a lot of it over the years, I brought some with me when I moved here & have collected more. 2 years ago I decided that it was time to start paring it all down & I have had several garage sales & have donated truck loads of stuff also. I'm still selling a few things here & there on the local buy, sell, trade site & on eBay, but I have greatly reduced how much I have. I have the attic mostly all empty now, I had to empty my storage shed to make the coop for the chickens, the garage is getting less & less cluttered, & now I just have my storage room with stuff in it. But now I have my Christmas decorations where I can get to them instead of waiting for DH to get them out of the attic every year. I still want to reorganize things better in there & may get some shelving & stuff, but at least it's mostly all in that room now. We have a room off the utility room that used to be the original garage to the house & then they built a detached double garage & I think used that old garage for an office. I now use it for storage & it's where our big freezer is, it's a perfect storage area. Good luck to you getting your space cleaned out, it's satisfying when you make progress.

I knew you would, but I ahead of you, cause I am making my first shipment of sold birds today!!!

I am so excited for these rosecombs to be going to okla. and going into a birchen breeding program!!!

Now, if I can get this other trio sold, I will have room for my new babies that will be hatching, or, going in the hatcher next monday. I have 7 rosecombs, and 7 blue/reds in the bator right now. Would have been 8 rosecombs, but some one

dropped an egg.

Any way, enjoying the weather here, really nice here today. Only about 44 out, but the sun is so bright, I don't even have my coat on, and a short sleeve t-shirt too boot.

How is your DH doing, I have been stewing down here, course, I know you have been working,

but need info please, or if you don't, I may have to come up there and take your glasses!!!!:

Was your FIL in Lawrence? I think our elderly neighbor just moved out. His family pulled a dumpster up to the house and cleared it out. I loved that guy and I hope he's okay.

Checoukan-We really don't know anything yet. DH is talking to the Dr. this afternoon. He is going to have the nuclear treadmill test, and should have had it tomorrow, but the unit is down and getting serviced, so it will be next Tues. before he gets it done. He seems to be about the same, other than going kind of stirr crazy not being able to do much. If he gets any worse we will call and get sent out and get taken care of on an emergency basis.

We have decided that no matter what this test shows we are going to call my old neighbor in Salina, Mark Mikinski, who is a cardiologist and get a referral to someone in Topeka. I trust Mark. We knew him and his family well. Their kids were the same age as mine and our kids grew up together. He is well respected and I've seen him work. I'm sure he will steer me in the right direction.

I've always been a little leary of how physicians give referrals. I've seen how it works sometimes.... refer to the new guy just because he is new or to your old med school buddy, or to someone because they will send business (money) back your way.

At any rate, as soon as I know something I will let you know.

well, this morning started out pretty bad. I didnt' sleep last night- worst sore throat, and body aches. Went to the Dr this morning and tested positive for Strep. That makes it twice in two months. That's pretty insane. I think my kids are little carriers of everything and just drag it home to me.

ANyway, slept most of the day away, still feeling miserable and slow moving. I'm starving right now since I didn't eat anything yet, but too afraid to eat. Told my DH to bring home ice cream.

Ivy, congrats on your new baby! I hope you get more! Glad you are going to see another Dr and making plans. Just as well. My Dr's office here is well set up, I was able to do the thalium/nuclear testing and cat scan right away after my heart attack. I can't imagine having to wait and worry, and things not happen in a timely manner. I think it's ridiculous. I've never done a nuclear test with a treadmill-- that's a new one. I've done lots of treadmills tests, and they always hook me up to the monitors, wheel in the crash cart and then turn on the treadmill and let you go until you about fall over. I hate it when it starts inclining. It used to take an awful lot to wear me out since I used to run. But since I injured my feet, I'm out of shape and it takes less time. I hope your DH can get in as soon as possible. I can't believe how long you are waiting for all of this to happen.
Checoukan, thats great that you are getting to ship your birds now. Great timing since it's been great weather. Hopefully they'll do great in transit.

LOVING all the extra chatter and people to the thread! So nice to get a nice big group here-- more people, the more we learn.

Being a total bum today and slept on the couch. My throat is still on fire. Sigh. I'll be ready for the meds to kick in.

I actually think that I am going to use an old rabbit cage to house them in for the first few weeks. It's about 4 feet wide and 3 feet long and 3 feet tall. It's metal with a plastic tray base, so it'll be easy to clean out. I"ll be able to hang the lamp on the outside pointing in and adjust the height easily.

Tweety, you can keep a lot of chicks in the house. It just depends on where they are and how much you have to dust. I've had chicks in here for 2 years solid in one way or another and the dust has really accumulated. You can't get rid of it if you keep chicks all the time. I don't think you'll notice much from 4 chicks at all.
Ivy, I never give my dogs chicken bones. Actually raw chicken bones provide some great nutrients. Cooked chicken bones splinter and can puncture a bowel. I cook the chicken and the bones on the stove until it literally falls apart, then I separate the bones from the meat and broth. My daughter who works directly with vets for her business, buys chicken leg quarters and feeds them whole to her dogs because they are especially good for joint health. My dogs won't eat raw chicken though. I am glad of that because I sure wouldn't want them to get a taste of it and start eating birds. I'm told they don't associate a feathered bird with a dressed one, but just the same I don't want to risk it.
I went to the doc today and got a good report. However their xray machine was down so I walked 2 blocks to another building to get my xrays. It was one of my clumsy moments and I must have stepped wrong walking downhill and fall nad hit my butt hard. Now my back hurts. I'm sure I just pulled some muscles. What a Klutz I am!
I had some fun and went to Lowes, Harbor Freight, Gordman's and Hobby Lobby. Lowes had 70% off on the remaining Christmas stuff they had. I Picked up some ornaments and some fancy ornament hangers. I spent the most at Harbor Freight. I bought package of pliers and wrenches that were dirt cheap to throw in my small toolbox in the house. DH keeps running off with all my tools. I bought a pneumatic metal cutting saw. It was on sale and I want to try it out. I have metal to use as a back splash in my kitchen and am looking for the perfect tool to cut it. I spent a fortune on it and keep putting off hanging it because I am afraid of ruining it. And I bought a driveway alarm. I'm not sure where I'm going to use it. I think I'll do some testing to see what it picks up. I may end up using it out by the bird pens. If it picks up something small once I get the chicken palace moved out back it might be a good predator alarm. If not I'll just use it in my driveway cause I never hear anyone drive in.
I got some nice candle holders at Gordmans that match my couch pretty good and a wife beater to wear under one of my lower necked shirts.
I had a hay day at Hobby Lobby. 90% off remaining Christmas. I bought a couple of throw pillows which look like candy. More stuff to throw around! I bought a really nice sized tin that is a little taller than a cookie tin for 59 cents. It had been 5.99. It'll be a great water warmer. I bought a couple of large $8 and $10 scented candles for $.80 cents and $1. Then I bought a purple Christmas tree that had been 129.99 for $12.99. It said it didn't light. They were right! The silly chinese forgot to put the plugs on the ends of the wires, and I got two middle sections with it! The box was closed, but I figured I could fix whatever was wrong. It wasn't what I expected but I have tons of old light strings I can rob a plug from. There was one tree there that had been $500 and was marked down to $49.99. I might have bought it, but I have a couple of big trees. I was actually looking for a slim one. This purple tree is really slender so I'll probably just use it for an accent decoration. So I added to my already huge collection of Christmas decorations. I have about everything imaginable. I really hope that one of these years I'll be able to display it all again.
DH fed my birds while I was gone so it was like a vacation day for me!
