Hawkeye, it really doesn't look like a wild pigeon, my guess is it belongs to someone & has gotten cold & deyhdrated. It's hard to tell where it could have come from. I was reading about the snowy owls coming into KS from the Arctic & how they're starving when they get here. People don't see them that much, so they're getting too close to take pics of them. I don't know if you read that article in the Wichita Eagle or not, but it said to keep your distance so they don't freak out & use their remaining energy to escape, but to hunt for food that they need instead. Anyway, I guess my point is that maybe this pigeon came from a ways off & just couldn't make it any more without food & water. Someone may be missing it, I would put an ad on Craigslist along with a pic of the bird & see if you get any replies. I agree, you shouldn't put it in with your chickens, it could carry disease to them. It is a pretty bird though, I hope you find out where it belongs.

Well I finally talked DH into letting me stay here this weekend & he is going to go on without me. He finally listened to me about giving his mom what I have & I told him if she got sick & then developed pneumonia I couldn't be responsible for that, I would feel awful. He can't say all that much about it really because he is the one that brought home this crud to me. I wasn't sick until he coughed & sneezed all over the place. I am so relieved really, I not only wasn't looking forward to having to take that trip when I'm sick, but having to do all the things I have to do in order to get ready to go, all the packing, extra care for the animals, errands & all fall on me because he's working tonight. It saved him some money anyway since the dogs won't have to be boarded from Fri. until Mon. I didn't want to go there & be around all of the people coming in for the birthday party sneezing & coughing like I am, I'm sure they will appreciate my staying home too. His sister-in-law probably doesn't need to be around me either, she has a pacemaker & doesn't need to be exposed & get sick. It will be better for me to stay here & not pass it around & maybe I can rest tomorrow all day & feel a little better before my son gets here late tomorrow night. I hope I don't pass this on to him, but he is aware that I"m sick & he's still coming. He didn't get to see his daughter at Christmas, so I'm sure he is excited to see her & she to see him. She has been upset with him about not getting to come more, but he just started a new job & now has crazy hours 6 days a week. At least it's not too far for him to drive here from OKC, so he can make it here in not too long & back home after Kadence has to be home on Sunday.

Danz, Trish, TNT, everyone-- thanks for all the tips and help/support on the pigeon. The poor thing just died. He was drinking and seeming like he might be okay, then he tipped over and died. Ah well. BUT-- ya'll have definitely freaked me out enough that I stripped down, put all of my clothes and towels in the wash (going to wash it TWICE!) and then I took a shower! LOL I'm not taking any chances. I'll be back to catch up.

Well, that's great your son gets to come for a visit. I hope you'll be feeling better by then and won't be passing on the joy of sickness. hehe! That is sad about the snowy owl. I didn't see that article. I don't suppose they eat bird food at the feeders... Guessing they want mice and rabbits. Poor things.

Probably washing your hands and the towel would have sufficed but it sure can't hurt since you aren't sure what killed it. I'm still guessing it was just severely hydrated and it was too much for it.
I'm so glad to hear that Trish. It's the right thing to do. You need to take care of yourself and get well.
We've had a bunch of these starlings around here that almost act tame but they are sick and I keep finding dead ones here and there. I wish they would just go away. I used to just shoot in their direction but they've gotten used to the sound now. I am sure that's where they colds have come from in the chickens. Since it got colder they have started going through the chicken wire and drinking from the heated water bowls. Makes me sick but I don't know how to eradicate them.
I'm so glad to hear that Trish. It's the right thing to do.
On a cheery note from me, I had a turkey hatch today. I thought I had two viable eggs but so far just one hatch. I'm excited.

On the subject of snowy owls there was one that lived out on the cooling lake at Wolf Creek for years. It was on the back side where no one but employees with permission had access. It was a huge beautiful bird and it almost always was sitting on the same exact fence post. You can't imagine what a sight he was. Those white feathers combined with the big eyes and enormous size was just awesome. I would love to see one again some day. I think it lived on fish and mice and drank from the lake.

I've read that the best thing to do with dead starlings when you find them is to pick them up and burn the carcasses. The carcass themselves can cause diseases, but often isn't the cause of the birds death. Where there are large numbers of starlings dying it is often due to poisioning of large numbers or pesticides. Pigeons often have the same diseases. Be sure to dispose of the pigeon properly to avoid any spread of anything. Most likely the weather had something to do with it's death.

The last chick I hatched had badly spraddled legs. I hobbled him with a small strip of vet wrap and put him in with the rest. He seems to be motoring around pretty good already. I also changed the padding under them to a piece of terrycloth rag. That way he can get a little better footing. Seems to be working.

I have a PIP in a ROSECOMB egg! This will be the first one to (hopefully) hatch. The little hen has stopped laying for a while, so I switched her to a pen where she will be warmer and have a light on. Maybe I can get a few more eggs soon.

I did get quite a few eggs today. A couple of them were frozen solid! I'm surprised they laid any at all since it is so bitterly cold out. One of my wheaten ameraucanas has started using the nest to lay her eggs. Finally. I'm tired of picking eggs up out of the shavings and poop on the floor.

I need to get some warmer pants to do chores in. My legs are about frozen. I don't like those big one piece things. I just can't seem to move well enough in them. My coats are always warm enough, but my legs are always cold. I want something easy to slip in and out of.

My husband really likes those flannel lined jeans he gets at Orschelns. He prefers jackets and layers unless it's really bitter, then he will put on his coveralls. But for the most part he goes with the jeans and jackets.

For bitter cold, I purchase the hand and foot warmers. Can be purchased at sporting good stores, Walmart's dollar stores, many places. they areindividual, the ones for the toes tor adhere to one's socks, keep feet warm all day , 10 hours and the hand warmers, I leave them in my mittens or work gloves for the day.

I take a beta blocker which causes a raynaud symdrome in cold weather, so, my toes and finger tips become painfully numb in the winter when outside, So thermals, and warmers, like hunters, skiers and those who are outdoors in cold weather.

Looks like pigeons in the northeast.

Warm blankies, perhaps some dried worms, or bird seed.

How about an over the counter antibiotic, or perhaps it has internal injuries.
