Consolidated Kansas

Ummm....I haven't seen those symptoms but I'm kinda reacting the same way you described just reading that so....where would I get some Ivermectin to keep on hand just in case?

Rittert-Yes, I would definitely treat that bird with the Ivermectin. If you can't afford to buy any, call around and see if there is someone you know from the sale barn or something that would let you have a couple cc's. It doesn't take much!

The other thing I would do is get some VetRx. It's not too expensive and it works pretty good to help alleviate some of the congestion. Hope some of this works because you are in danger of loosing that bird.

I took a long drive today to pick up a stacking cage for some of my chickens. It's 3 cages that stack and is actually built for exotic birds. It sells on the website for over $700. I picked this one up for $200 so it was worth the drive. We disassembled it for the trip home and the thing rattled, clattered and banged around all the way home. I even took a different route home just so I could be on smoother roads. It is all powder coated and has the feed bowls and appears to be in very good condition. It's going to save some floor space in the barn, that's for sure.

I hatched another rosecomb this morning.

There was another lavender ameraucana hatched when I got back this evening, too. Several more eggs are in lockdown and I hope some more hatch. I will take them out of the incubator in the morning. I'm also going to get the cage reassembled and start to work on my brooders I want to build PLUS I've got to work tomorrow. Today was my day off but I spent most of it on my trip to get the cages. I've GOT to get those brooders done or else resort to my old system with the stock tanks. I hate to do that. I don't like bending over the tanks and I hate cleaning them out. I want an easier system. I may have to use them but hopefully only temporarily.

Danz-I'm in the same boat! I have to get the little varmints out of the basement!

ugh, I went to see if I could buy 3cc's of Ivermectin from the vet the other day and they said they don't sell it and I don't have enough money to buy the 60 some dollar bottle from the farm stores (I did price it the other day when I was in price shopping for feed and quail founts). I won't be able to get vet Rx for at least a couple weeks. What about some terramycin soluble in their water would that help?

http://www.amazon.com/Durvet-Ivermectin-Pour-On-250ML/dp/B000HHOEIU is the link to a smaller portion through Amazon. It still isn't cheap, but at least it isn't a huge container.

Okay Renee, Ivy, and Danz-- whoever else uses Ivermectin... correct me if I'm wrong here... but is this the same stuff I give my horses? I buy it in individual tubes (large horse syringe) that I squirt in their mouth. Would that work? If that's the case, those are cheap! Rittert could afford to buy one of those. They range from $7 to $12 a tube. I would buy the cheaper tube, because I'm guessing they don't need the more expensive tube-- that contains some pretty harsh stuff that you need only once a year. I buy that one once a year for my horses and then buy the cheaper ones to worm every 3 months. (as recommended by my vet, and I closely follow what he says to give them) It feels like I'm constanly buying wormer! If this is the same stuff?? I think I'll go ahead and worm my silkies, since I don't think they've had it done in a while. How often do you worm them, anyway? How much of that paste do you give them? It's a creamy paste and I usually buy it in the Apple flavor so my horses don't hate me afterward. ha!

Rittert... I would think you might still have mites, as Renee says, possibly in the ears. But even if not-- I'd say with confidence that you STILL have a sick bird with upper respiratory congestion. If you don't treat her, it's going to be up to how well she can survive it. I nearly lost Zorro-- when I finally took him to the vet, he told me he wasn't so sure that the Baytril was going to work, because it was awfully late in the game. I'd been noticing the yawning and head shaking (classic symptoms) for almost a week by that point. Zorro was just laying there and starting to fall asleep with his head dropping between his legs. It was BAD. I'm just really sorry I delayed going to the vet that long! We gave him Baytril there at the vet and then I came home with the bottle to give that night, too. I also started the other birds on the drug because they were showing the same signs-- but not nearly as advanced as he was. I'm not kidding, I think you could lose your bird. After the 7 days of Baytril, I then switched to VetRX as they still were shaking their heads, but not yawining any longer. After another week of the VetRX, they were cleared up and no more head shaking... no more yawning. They are fine now.

The Baytril cost me $30 for the bottle. It was no where near what I thought I was going to spend. The VetRX cost me $12 online to buy-- and that was including shipping. I shopped around because most people wanted a lot more than that-- up to $18! I bought the VetRX from: EntirelyPets.com I'm looking at the invoice, and they charged me $6.69 for the bottle and $5.65 for shipping with a total of $12.34. It was shipped fast, too. I bought the one for puppies and dogs-- because it has the same exact ingredients and the poultry one was like $3 more expensive! I read all the reviews and everyone recommended getting the puppy one for birds, that it was the same and you pay less.

It probably sounds like we're all coming across as really bossy, but I know I'm really worried for your bird and I think we all just want you to know how fast these birds die-- and with those symptoms, you don't have much longer.

Saturday!!! So far, the sun is coming out and it's looking like it's going to be gorgeous! I cleaned house all day yesterday! It's feeling good again. Going to clean house today too and then relax tonight. We actually have a party tomorrow here, so I want it all spotless and everything in it's place.

I need to switch out the tarp on top of my dog pen. It's been nearly ripped to shreds. I couldn't get it tight enough (tied down) so it was really blown around. I bought some rubber bungees and I'm going to use that instead for the new tarp. I'll take a picture once I get it switched .. right now, it's embarrassing looking! LOL!!!

Okay... as to the silkie eggs, are you all telling me that I can pull the eggs out of my fridge that I put in there and USE those in the incubator?!?!?! And the eggs I find that are already really cold... those will work too!?!?!? Isnt' that quite bizarre?? I can't imagine a baby coming out a cold egg like that! That's kind of amazing, right?

I just joined on Facebook and asked to be placed by Pittsburg. Hope to get to know you all.

and Welcome to the Kansas thread!!! So exciting to see new people here! We love nothing more than new people hopping on! Feel free to speak up and tell us about your birds and what you have! I have a lot of family down in that area! LOVE Chicken Annies. :) Although, we usually eat at the one in Girard. It's so funny, most times when we drive down there, we wind up running into our family eating there too-- or just around town. :) Hope you enjoy this board, there is so much information here! And everyone on this thread is super fun.

Welcome Patricia. We have a great little group here and are thrilled to have newcomers. We talk more like a group of friends than a bunch of strangers. Please feel free to tell us about yourself and again glad to see a new face.
