Does anyone use plastic zip ties on their chickens legs to tell them apart? I have quite a few hens I can't tell which is which!

Checoukan posted a pic of 3 little chicks just a page or two ago that shows zip ties on the leg of one of hers. That does seem like a nice easy method to tell them apart - you just have to leave enough room to cut them off without hurting the chick and replace with a larger one, as they grow.

Congrats tweety. I'm right there with you. Going to be a grandparent mid April. Not sure I'm ready for this.

OK. I'll admit it. I've been crocheting for over 30 years. Just one of those hobbies you learn when you're little & just can't let go of. If all you are looking for is a baby blanket I could probably help you out. Give me some ideas on colors, patterns, etc & I'll shoot you a price. Probably just the cost of materials which won't be much. Let me know.

That would be awesome! Thank You! I will have a look at some patterns and get back to you with the colors when we find out the sex. Again, thank you. I love those handmade blankets. They are so much better than any store bought one!

HEChicken-- we've cut concrete! The saw that we used looked like a HUGE circular saw (those hand saws). I think possibly my DH rented it or maybe he still has that thing around here!? I haven't seen it when I've been on my tool raids. But I know you have to buy a special blade for it. But that blade lasted for all of our cuts. We cut big square holes (not huge-- but big enough to dig down into). Then you sledge the concrete in the middle (hammer it out) and then you could auger out your holes or use a fence post digger. Set your post and then back fill with concrete mix and level it out with a trowel on top. It was really not too hard. Don't be afraid of doing that! :)

Danz, sorry you are sick too! I finally took some decongestant a couple hours ago and it put me under. I just woke up-- and who knows what my Littles have been doing. It's impossible to nap or sleep with them here-- they will do bad things. Like over flow toilets, smear toothpaste everywhere-- and so many more things I have caught them doing in the past-- and that was when I was wide awake! Anyway, still feeling bad, but at least my nose has cleared up a bit.

I've used those hawkeye, I worked for a concrete construction co. for two weeks and used them to make pressure releif cuts. Major backache. But anyway sketch up is still a useful tool you can use it to play with dementions and Ideas and see how the look before you build. Heres a link to my new pigeon breeder pen that I drew up, it took about 4 hours total. (I couldn't get the pic to show up) http://i1129.photobucket.com/albums/m507/rittert32005/PigeonBreeder.png

Thanks! They're all full grown. I just liked the idea of zip ties to keep better track of them! :)

That pigeon breeder looks really good. I'm still playing with mine....

I've been taking decongestant for the last 24 hours. I'm not feeling any better. As soon as I start moving around my nose starts tickling and I start blowing and sneezing again. I did take a nap for a couple of hours. I felt better for a few minutes. I still haven't been out to feed and water the birds. I just can't make myself go do it. I guess I need to pretty quick or they won't get to eat today. (there's always plenty out there but a little of it might have gotten wet). The ones that have to eat outside I am sure are hungry. I was hoping DH would offer. He isn't doing anything and isn't nearly as sick as I am. He's out in the shop anyway so he doesn't have to get all bundled up. Fat chance.
So Hawkeye, Any idea how long this bug lasts?

Thanks David. Okay, here's my first question: dimensions. I started my coop yesterday and used their handy dandy method of getting it the right size, by typing in the measurements and letting it adjust the rectangle to the correct size. So far, so good. But how do I now see those dimensions? Once they're in, and the rectangle complete, the dimensions don't show up in the measurements box any more and I'm not sure how to see them again. (This also comes up when I look at other people's shared plans, but can't tell the lengths of their walls.....)

In the FREE version of SketchUp you have to "measure" & mark dimensions if you want to know how big something is. To do this make sure you are using the "large tool set" that displays on the left side of the screen. If it's not there you can enable it from the menu bar by selecting View>Toolbars>Large Tool Set. Roughly in the middle of the toolbox (right next to the tape measurer) is the dimension tool (looks like 2 lines with a number 3 on top). Click this button, go to your drawing, click a starting point & an end point of what you want to measure & then again to display the dimension wherever you'd like. I don't think it's too hard. Or, you can buy the professional version of SketchUp for $500 to have the software do it automatically. I prefer the "cheap" method.
Good Luck!
