Consolidated Kansas

Well i got some terramycin 343 antibiotic yesterday and finally got my birds on it, i hope it wipes this runny nose problem some of them got out pretty quickly!!!!! Some of them it hasnt even effected but some of them have got it, i guess some of them must have a little stronger immune system... Danz sorry to hear about you being sick, i think that that flu virus is spread all over because my kids have been sick and puking off and on all week!!!! I think if this weather would just make up its mind whether its gonna be cold all the time or warm all the time then maybe everyone wouldnt be getting sick all the time!!!!!!

Welcome to backyard chickens jeff and wichita kidd!!! Look forward to chatting with yall on here!!!!!

Danz, just figured out why we aren't getting quail eggs. The light-colored one is a boy, too. He's so light his bib doesn't really stick out in a discernible fashion, so we thought it was a girl!

I'll be needing eggs next time anyone is coming up near here!! Can't have a bachelor pad alone! :)

Ivy - If you want some suggestions on the mealworm project, let me know. They are easy to raise and you don't need anything fancy or costly for equipment either.

I didn't join the chatter in regards to your DH, but the news that he is on the mend is wonderful. What a relief.

David - crochet and yarn work is a lot of fun. I have done crochet work, it seems like, forever. Doing some short cut knitting now. I just wish I had more time for it.

Wow it has taken me quite awhile to catch up on reading on here, I got behind.

IVY, I'm so glad they found the problem with your DH & he is doing so much better! That has to be such a relief for both of you. Congrats on the new chicks too. My Lavender Ameraucanas still aren't laying, I just don't think they have enough light in where they are. I don't have any more places to plug in anything else so I guess I'll just have to wait it out until it gets warmer & I can take the tarps off the sides of the run they're in. I would love to have some eggs from them, but sigh, I guess I'll have to be patient. I think one at least of the BC Marans is laying, but the eggs aren't very dark, do they get darker as they lay longer? They're pretty small eggs right now.

Danz, I sure hope you feel better soon, that stuff is the pits, it sounds just like what I had. It has taken me 2 wks to even mostly be over it. I still am blowing some stuff from my nose occasionally & cough in the mornings some to clear my lungs. My DH had it way before me & he said he doesn't feel like his lungs are still all cleared out. He is a runner & he said he was feeling like he was running uphill the other day.

Well on the Lily & Jasmine saga, it still continues. I had tried the board behind the livestock panel with just the very bottom corner square open for the chickens & as I said, they got through that too, so I was really angry with them. They spent a day with one on the chain in the yard & the other in the dog run. But unfortunately it didn't even make an impact because this morning I decided I might as well not put the board there, it was a big hassle for me & they could get through anyway. I finished feeding, letting everyone out, & gathering eggs this morning & while I was in the garage again the dogs both went into the run & coop. They give themselves away with all the noise they make in there. I ran them out of there & waited awhile after yelling at them so they wouldn't think they were being rewarded for being bad & then gave them both a huge bone to chew on. I can hear them arguing over something right now in the backyard. One must like the other one's bone better, who knows, they fight all the time over something or the other. If you could hear them every night when I put them in the dog run you would think they're killing each other. They bark & growl & carry on like it's a fight to the kill & then it settles down for the night. I can't imagine what anybody hearing that every night thinks. Anyway, I gave up & have ordered a shock collar, which I will try on Lily first since she is the most stubborn of all. I'll let you all know when it gets here & I try it. I just don't know what else to do with these dogs. I even quit filling my feeders in the coop because the food won't ever get to the chickens, the pups eat it. I feed the chickens at night when I put them in. That's about the only way I can make sure they get some food is when the pups are shut up in the dog run & the chickens can have some peace in their coop.

Our Poultry Swap is going like gangbusters, it's so thrilling to watch! We need two more members & we will reach 200, maybe today. I did have to remove one post so far that was a pet related post. Tonya & I are in agreement that we don't want it to become just another pet swap, there are far too many of those already. Our Poultry swap is unique & we want to keep it that way.

Well I hope all that are feeling crummy get better soon! We enjoyed the rain we got here, it was wonderful. It's been like a desert here & I was afraid nothing would be alive come spring if we didn't get some moisture. I hope everyone has a good day!

I am in the process of starting a new project. I've had to do some long, hard self-talk in order to convince myself to do this, but I think it will work out fine. I am going to raise some mealworms.

I've been reading on here and it looks like it is very simple and not very time consuming. It's also the best protien snack you can give your birds. Besides supplementing the chickens, I want to use them to "cage train" some of my show birds. I'm pretty sure I can get them really excited about a meal worm!

I actually got a mealworm farm set up last week. Bought 1000 of them, some wheat germ from the market, dumped them all in a 10 gallon aquarium that leaks and threw in some apple and lettuce. They go through the "real" food pretty quick, but other than that - that's all there is to it! After a week, I already have a few pupea that's going to turn to beetles soon. I wanted to get a nice colony up and running by the time the chicks can start eating them. It's a lot easier than you think and once it's up and going - it's a free source of treats!!

So raising meal worms do you start with the live worms or do you start with beetles. Once they turn to beetles which I assume you want to keep them coming, how do you keep them in the container? I've thought many times about doing this but didn't know how to go about it.

Oh geez! I have that problem now and then too. I could probably mail you some eggs if you want. I actually have them cleared out so they are all fresh. DH keeps turning off the lights so they aren't laying as much as before, but I still have some eggs.

Danz, I have mine in just plastic containers like small sweater containers you buy at the dollar store. The beetles can't climb the slick plastic sides so they can't get out. I just cut most of the lid out, leaving an inch of so rim around & hot glued some window screen to the inside to provide air, really easy. I have beetles galore in mine right now. I feed them pieces of apples & carrots mostly. They like empty toilet paper rolls to climb in & lay eggs on. I started mine with the meal worms I bought from the gal on BYC who sells them. She has lots of info for those who want it. Just do a search on BYC for mealworm farming & you will get loads of info.
