Consolidated Kansas

Hawkeye-Hope your little one gets well quickly. It's no fun having sick kids... for either of you.

Danz-How are you doing today? I sure hope that antibiotic has kicked in. You've sure had a rough winter.

Karen-If you can't stand to PLUCK the pasty off, sometimes I use a pair of scissors and snip it off. Just be VERY careful when you do that so you don't snip part of the little chick. This also helps trim the fluff so the poop is less likely to stick in the future.

Good morning to everyone. Gees! It is so cold out this morning.

Both of our nubians that are close to kidding are STILL hanging on! They sure LOOK like they are going to kid today, though. As cold as it is we will have to bring those babies in the house to warm up and dry off. I'll get pictures for sure if they do.

I had one new baby black copper marans this morning. It had just popped out of the shell.

I got the 3 chicks out of the incubator that hatched yesterday and they look to be doing well. I have a buyer coming today that is going to buy all of the BCM chicks that I've hatched so far. I'm going to run up to Orscheln's today and get the last few supplies I need to finish my brooder, but I am NOT going to move any chicks out there until it warms up a few degrees!

Do you know if Atwoods carries blukote?

Atwoods probably does carry blukote. I got mine at TSC but that was before the Andover Atwoods opened up. Hopefully you won't need it for red bottoms/pasty butt, but it is good to have some on hand anyway, as you never know when you will need it.

Can't wait to see more pics of those chicks!

I have a brooder like that. In fact I even built one, made a plan with pictures and sold it a couple times. Easy build. That is what I used before DH built me the brooder house. It won't fit in there because of the dividers though. It works wonderfully though.
Here I am on antibiotics and have now managed to come down with a sinus infection on top of the bronchitis, which I didn't have before. I noticed one of my sisters has the flu now. I haven't been around her so she picked it up elsewhere. Seh is very healthy though so she should get over it in a few days.
Hawkeye I'll bet your kid has an ear infection. Nothing is more miserable for a kid. One of mine had chronic ear infections for years. We finally got a permanent script for ear drops and could usually clear it within 24 hours without having to give him oral antibiotics. I never let them put tubes in his ears. That is just too dangerous IMO.
I'm going to think spring all day and maybe something will warm up and brighten up!

We must have been posting about the same time and I didn't see your post at first. There are quite a few people in the Lawrence/Topeka area that are on here.

Ivywoods: I have 100 lbs of chick starter on hand for the first 4 weeks. The following 2 weeks they should go through 150 lbs! Anyway, that's what one of my books say. What is a self-feeder? Do you have a pic? I have 5 of the trays with holes, but right now they would rather eat from the flatter trays (and sleep there, etc

) so I'm wasting quite a bit of feed for now keeping those reasonably clean. I have more chicks coming either Sunday or Tuesday (HOPE Sunday) or I would just switch them over to the regular feeders. What kind of waterer do you use? I'm using the mason jars with screw on trays, 4 of them, and they go through all four over the course of a day. Of course, I empty and clean them as I need to, which is at least three times; once in the a.m., once around noon and once at bedtime. They certainly do not adhere to my standards of cleanliness without a lot of help. Just like regular babies!
Better to waste some feed than leave them with dirty stuff to eat. I have older chickens so I dump the old feed out and the older chickens pick out the good stuff and leave the poo. That way it isn't a total loss. I use the quart size jars for the first week or two but you can go to the gallon size if you throw some clean rocks or flat marbled in there so they won't drown. Grab a piece of wood or make a stand with 1/4 inch hardware cloth for the waterers and that will help keep the litter and stuff out of the water. emphasis on HELP not cure.

Hawkeye, I'm worried about them having a red bottom and getting picked. Should I get blukote before plucking or is that really not a problem? Do you know if Atwoods carries blukote? I knew plucking was an option, and seriously considered trying it but lacked the confidence to go for it. Thanks for the encouragement, I'll give it a try today.
Just pick up the chick and gently tug on the poo. The little fuzz comes out easily. You shouldn't be hurting them at all. It is very effective and their fuzz grows back really fast.
I really, really like the brooder light set up and I can tell the chicks are very content with their quiet peeping. Happy chicks, happy me!

Thanks all!

Ivy---More baby rosecombs!!! Have to fix up my new brooder for my older chicks. Just too cold to go out to the barn yet. going to fix me up something in the garage next to the new trio of rose combs that I have. I think it will work good. Fred got called out at 3:40 this morning. Didn't get back until 8:30 so it is very quite at the homestead this morning.
