Consolidated Kansas

Marty, I don't live in Waverly. I actually live out really close to Wolf Creek. I only have a Waverly address. If I lived a half mile south I would have a Burlington address. It's crazy the way things are divided.
I only have some black silkies. They aren't anything special for sure. If I could pick up some quality breeders I might do so but for now these are kind of a side project. If you were still interested we could work something out. I never know from day to day or week to week what I am going to be breeding next. I always have some young pullets or hens around. I save a lot of my leftover cross breeders just to produce eating eggs. Personally some of those are the best layers and are some of my prettier birds.
Not implying you don't know this since you've had goats, but I might suggest if you are wanting to get small goats for milking to go with Nigerian Dwarfs rather than pygmy's. I've had both. The Nigerians are actually a milk goat and are smaller than the pygmies. They really fill their bag with milk and almost always have twins so you can double your money with them. If you take a trip to Yates Center to their exotic animal auctions it's a pretty good place to pick one up pretty cheap. I sometimes wish I'd kept a little female just to have milk for the pups. They are about to have an early spring sale. Things either go super high in early spring or super low. It all depends on the weather. I personally prefer to buy goats in the fall cause everyone is trying to downsize for winter.
Hawkeye you don't give yourself enough credit. You are awesome! Like Bama said these are your first eggs. Give them a little time to practice and they'll get it right.

Thanks, Danz.

Busy day on the board! Welcome Marty! Glad to have you around! :)

I'm glad to see that the snow here in Lawrence is already melting off. I really don't want the slush to freeze over night though. Ice is worse than snow!

Hawkeye - You might call yourself neurotic, but I learn so much from the questions you ask - so please don't stop! LOL

Tweetysvoice: I'm just outside Tongie off of 24/40 on the way to Lawrence. I go to Lawrence for shopping and sometimes work.
I have a small flock and am desparately trying to keep it that way. I love poultry and can get carried away if I don't keep myself in check.
I have 20 chickens (including 2 roosters). I have a couple Marans, 4 Americaunas, and the rest are an assortment of brown egg layers.
So I want to add some white egg layers to the mix. I have 4 Chinese geese I'm considering rehoming and starting over with Toulouse.
Chinese geese are just too aggressive for my taste, and I have smaller children who are terrified of them. And I have 9 guinea fowl, which I
plan on adding more this summer just because they do such a wonderful job keeping the bugs down and we have a large property.
I actually took a few pictures the other day so I could add an avatar. My avatar is the chicken house in progress. We need to put siding on
this year and then paint it. That's all that's left, really. Oh, and to add a window or way to vent it for the summer.

Healthy looking birds, Honeycreek.
Tweety, I can't believe your snow is gone. We've had a constant drizzle light snow mix all day long. It hasn't really accumulated any more, but it hasn't gone away either. I'm just very thankful to have a nice warm house, especially after being out to feed and water today.
Come on Spring!

Those little rewards sure make it worth toasting a lot of eggs!!

Hawkeye- Sore Sorry about your fertility issues. It can really be a drag, I know. I try to keep 2 males with 3 females for optimum happiness Some females seem to prefer certain males, for whatever reason. (go figure, LOL) But seriously, with my ducks and turkeys, I've found that I just have to let the boys fight it out a big, and everyone breeds. I'm sure your male will work out his issues, with a little help from your scissors. IF that doesn't work, their is alwyas THE LINK!

You guys make me want to go candle my eggs, even tough I usually try to wait and only check once halfway thru. I can be SO OBSESSIVE about the eggs, that I just have to set myself limits, and try to be sane about it. Poultry will drive you nuts, but you should hang onto the wheel anyway!

Hiya Danz, thanks for the tip on the nygerian dwarfs. I would rather have a milk goat. The smallest goat i"ve had is a lamancha. I got a black one, because I could put her on a zip lead, like a dog, and the neighbors just thought she was a dog!

I'm not wanting extra fancy silkies, neccesarily, I want them for two reasons 1) good setters and broody 2) the males make only dark meat, and its a delicacy. (sorry)

Are they laying yet?? My duck eggs are tied up for two monthes, filling orders I've made since fall. I would love to get some eggs from you. My mom lives about 3 miles from Beto, but to the waverly side, so I'm actually in your area a lot. would love to buy some hatchers. Its a goal of mine to include some silkies in the easter hatch!

Whats everyone got hatching now???

Danz, I agree, I'm so ready for spring it's not funny & I know we have a ways to go yet, darn. Tweety, you're lucky your snow is gone, ours sure isn't. DH had to drive the old truck to work today because his car is stuck in the snow in the driveway. Our driveway is uphill at both ends, so it's not fun when it snows or is icy at all to get our cars up & down it. I had one of my DH's hats on today when I went out to feed animals. I rarely wear hats, I hate them, but my ear has been bothering me, I think I got out too much the day before in the cold wind, so I decided maybe today I should put something on my head. I was bundled up pretty well, but by the time I got done this evening feeding & taking care of all of the animals & filling the bird feeders out in the front yard my feet were frozen again. It takes awhile to get them thawed out when I come in. At least tomorrow it's supposed to start warming up again, I can handle that.

I took a photo of that egg I was telling you all about earlier from one of my Marans hens & I was trying to get it transferred from my camera to the computer & I can't figure out what the problem is. I can't get anything to transfer. I've never had this problem before, so now I'm wondering if it has anything to do with having to transfer all of my files to another hard drive when mine was failing. We use Adobe Photoshop Elements & we have version 8. It seems like it is kind of touchy about some things, so maybe it's time to get it upgraded again, we haven't done that for awhile. If it's not one thing it's another.
