Consolidated Kansas

Wow, you all were chatty today while I was gone! It took me awhile to catch up.

Hawkeye, those were some hilarious pics of your roo, he looked like a drowned rat, kind of like my little Yorkie when she's wet. He sure is good looking when he's clean & dry though. Hopefully you cured his problem with all of that.

Reading all about your heating systems & solar & all is really inspiring. They built this house we live in to be passive solar. The bottom floor has 3 sides built into the hill underground with cement walls. The whole front of the house is all windows, so that even in the winter the sun heats up the cement walls & it doesn't get too cold until the sun starts going down, that is unless it's horribly cold. They used to have a solar water heating system here I guess before we got here, but it wasn't operational by then. We use a woodstove to supplement heat in the winter & it works pretty well, it sure cuts down on electricity use since we're all electric here.

I went to Wichita today & picked up my new chick brooder box. I think I'm going to like it really well. I was wondering how I was going to hold the light, but he had a board screwed on there with adjustments that you can clamp the light on & adjust it up & down. I sure think it will be a lot easier for me to keep clean than the old stock tank I was using. It has a metal tray that pulls out to clean it & he said it washes really easy. I'm thinking that it will work for awhile until the chicks get a little bigger, then I may still have to use the stock tank, we'll see how it goes when my chicks get here.

Trish, Soudns like a full rich day. Hope your happy with the new acquisition....

Hawkeye... I love the stink eye that he's giving you in the first pic! LOL. Cracks me up! That's the same look I get when I have to wash my cat's butt! Beautiful bird (when he's dry)!

Thank you! Yeah, it was pretty hilarious to go from poufy to pathetic!

eeewww, i bet that was a lovely moment, but hopefully worth the trouble. Maybe he'll be a fertile myrtle now.

Lets hope this does it, I don't want to consider the alternative!

I am feeding all my hens standard layer feed. By phobiotics do you mean yougurt? I am giving her some ACV mixed in with her water.

Yogurt yes! Probiotics can be found in yogurt and you can also buy a jar of it at TSC for goats or horses. It comes in a powder and I use the scoop to sprinkle it on top of their food. That should really help with the yucky wet runny poop IF her bowels are messed up. And they could be! I'd give that a shot. This is what I use:

I paid $13 for it at TSC. But I later found out that you can buy it cheaper for horses.... Either way, this is good stuff to keep on hand for your birds anyway! This is a 1 lb tub and it's probably going to last me forever!!! But when my birds were sick, I was giving them shots of Baytril and that royally messed up their bowels and they were having really yucky and loose poo-- I started topping their feed every day with this powder and it cleared it up pretty fast. I gave it to them a few days past when their antibiotics shots stopped to be sure that it continued to counter act the effects of the antibiotic.

They don't make this "for poultry" so just keep that in mind when you're looking! This is GREAT stuff!!! But you do need to give it to them for a few days to work.

ETA-- just wanted to add that this powder also has a LOT of great vitamins in it, too! It had Vit A, D, E and C and Niacin-- so this could be good to boost her anyway just for the vitamins alone!

NICE that you got such a great brooder box! WOW! Hey, can you take a picture of it and post it so that we can see? Future reference so any of us could build one if it ends up really working out great for you!

Did he make this or buy it?

I saw pictures of Trish's brooder and it is a great design for a few chicks. It is really well made. It took some thought for sure.
Pikeman, is the hen's poop yellowish or just watery? If it is yellow that is a liver problem and she most likely can't recover. If it is just watery, give her some probiotics, some yogurt, or even break open a colon health capsule if you have some and keep it up for a few days. If you have her in a separate cage give her some fresh broccoli or something similar to help build up her vitamins and antioxidants. I know you wormed her but has she had any antibiotics as well?
I guess I'd better get in gear so I can make it to the doc. I need to deliver eggs as well. I am going to take some money I made off birds and go buy my parents a freezer while I am in town. It is going to be a surprise. I am thinking it will save them some trips of getting out to go shopping for groceries. Neither one of them have any business being out trying to drive or maneuver a shopping cart.

Me too! They look nice, and I'm sure DH would love even larger eggs and fatter ducks. I bet if there was a goose that laid 150 eggs a year, he'd want it for the BIG EGGS!

Morning. I'm home sick today, so I guess I'll get more computer time in.
