I'm thinking about the same way. I would probably save a male or two and keep all the females. Butcher the excess males or sell them. Midget whites are my focus. I am really wanting to get them going. The slates are beautiful birds but much larger. I want a good meat turkey that I can butcher without feeding an army. I might just raise the slates for resale.
Whew, long day here! I was gone all day, dropped back in home for like 30 mins and then left again and then just got back home. I had to take my oldest to get allergy shots. He got them.. and then like 30 mins later (had nothing to do with the shots) he started feeling sick. He was feeling sick before the shots.. Anyway, I gave him a bag and headed home. He started throwing up only 3 blocks away from the Drs office. By the time I got home, he'd filled his bag and after a quick trip to the bathroom, he's knocked out on the couch. I don't know what the heck is wrong with him. Food poisoning from school?? Or maybe just flu ..??
I still havent' gotten my panels put up. Going to have my Dh help me flip it over here quick. Better run so we can get on that! I bought the ground ties today. (they cork screw down into the ground and then you attach rope, chain or whatever to them. Whew!
I found someone on another thread whos sold eggs to others with good recomendations. She shipping me some midget whites for the big easter hatch-a-long. Did you get some ordered then?
Hawkeye - sorry your son is sick. Sounds like a great day....
Hello everyone. I still lurk a lot, I just don't always do more than say hi.
It sounds like you all have been busy today, I just got in & got cleaned up & then I've got to go out again to deliver a birthday present I was supposed to take yesterday when it started to storm. I also have to run to Ark City to Orschelyn's.
My DH took off about 3 hours of work & finished putting up our wood shed, it looks pretty nice. I was surprised he was able to get it all up without giving up, there were some parts that weren't exactly easy to get together. He pulled that stomach muscle getting the walls attached to the floor so he is still sore from that, but he managed to get it all done this afternoon. I'm proud of him.
The next building project around here is going to be my breeder coop & that's going to take awhile. Danz, how are you coming on your breeder trailer?
No Marty I don't have any eggs yet. Who has them to sell? They haven't started laying around here yet. Send me a PM. I know of one person who was selling some earlier but not sure I wanted them shipped with the changing weather.
Okay, back inside and the pen is right side up, I took the tarp down and threw it away. I may have to re-think that. Got the ground ties drilled down into the ground and the pen attached to them. Lets hope the pen doesn't go flying anymore!
Danz, so sorry about your rooster. That is just so sad! You did everything you could!! Congrats on your turkeys hatching! That is great! You really have a lot of luck with hatching!
Marty-- it actually WAS a great day until I picked my kid up! LOL
I ran around today and went to the ReStore and picked up a couple of matching cabinet door fronts with cool 70's handles and hinges on them. Going to put that on the coop for my brother. (going to sand and paint it with outdoor paint) I picked up a door frame with glass to finish off my own little hutch-- so there is a window in the pop door. Cute, yes? Anyway, I'm hoping tomorrow is super nice so I can hopefully try to finish off my coop! So excited!
What a day! I had to take my little girl to the Dr. today. She has had the same cold that I have had but yesterday she started to run a fever and her cough got horrible really fast. The doc said her lungs sounded terrible and he thought she had a bacterial infection in them. He called it micoplasmasomething. I can't remember the name. Because of my kids asthma they seem to catch every respiratory thing that comes around. My shed was delivered today but dh said we can't put it up until we move.
So I guess I will wait to get chicks unless I can figure out how to put a heat lamp in our existing coop. The coop was not well thought out when it was made and I can't reach the ceiling to hang anything. I will have to think about it and see what I can come up with. The meat birds will definitely have to wait because I don't have anywhere to separate them from the layers.
Hawkeye, I can't wait to see your little hutch coop all done, you will have to take pics so we can all see it.
I went to Orschelyn's in Ark City awhile ago & they had those darned brooders set up right in the front of the store where you have to walk past them to get to where you need to go. Geez, I had to go look & then tear myself away from there. I was so, so tempted to bring home chicks, but I don't have my spot set up yet for my brooder. Those chicks are so darned cute though, they just peep at you take me home, take me home. The manager was standing there & he asked me if they could package up all of the chicks & send them home with me, I said yeah right.
