Just wondering if anyone is experiencing chigger activity yet? I find my self scratching tonight and wonder if that's the cause. Also, is anyone going to plant their garden early this year, and if so, how early? Thanks.

Haven't seen any chiggers-- although I DID see a mosquito the other day!! I was shocked!! So this season doesn't look good on the blood suckers, I bet they are out in full force when spring hits.

Bama-- well you had me rolling, thanks! :)

Danz, been thinking of you! Hope your mom is doing better.

Checoukan, I candled the eggs last night-- I had 5 that the air sacs were still attached and I could see the yolk was fine. The other 5-- there were 3 I could see the air sac was not attached, but moved when I moved the egg, but otherwise, the yolk looked to be in tact, too. The last two-- for some reason, I couldn't see in them well and I didn't see an air sac or much of a yolk... I don't know what that means. I hope those two didn't get scrambled. I left them all in there and we'll see what hatches!! :) I think that's pretty good odds!!!

Well I went out & was taking care of the rabbits when I decided to check in on my little hen in the cage. I opened the door & was putting some new shavings in there for her when she flew out the door. She is very good at flying I found out, so she just flew on top of the tallest rabbit stack & from there to the rafters in the garage. I haven't been able to get her down so she's still up there. Hopefully she will come down eventually to eat & drink so I can catch her. I warned my DH when he went out to the garage to get in his car that she was up there so he wouldn't freak out if he heard something above his head.

So I'm not really up on incubating eggs & all since it's been so long for me, back in the 80s probably, Is there any way to check to see if the eggs are fertile before you put them in the incubator or do you have to put them in & then check them at some point? That may sound like a silly question, but I'm trying to collect some eggs for a lady who wants to try hatching some chicks with her kids so they can see the whole process.
I'm glad you finally caught her! Looks like she's feeling pretty good about herself! ha! I sure WISH there were a way to tell if the eggs were fertile without having to crack them open. But that's the only way I know of. Otherwise.. you stick them in your incubator and if they don't grow, they weren't fertile. That's a much longer way of going about it. I'd just start eating their eggs and when you see a bullseye, then start saving them back at that point.

Candace,
I had or still have kind a forum I started last June the place was picking up and doing good then allof the sudden in less then a week it fell apart. I had two people I trusted or thought I could trust one was a admin the other a global moderator. One of them hacked my account and started stealing information off the site to carry over to his new site. His little buddy decided to burn my site down by calling them on the phone and began to verbally abuse them before he left which caused most of them to leave as well. So now that there is nothing or many people left theres no reason to keep going over there. The part that really chaps my back side is that now when you google search my site he has attached his new site to it so no one will ever make it to mine.

Daren, that TOTALLY sucks!!!! WTH, right?! People can be so darned conniving and stupid. What did he think was going to happen? That you'd still be his best buddy and pat him on the back for a job well done on ruining yours? BTW-- I didn't see any site attached to yours. I went to check it out and perhaps it's just on the Google search? Of course, I just typed in the url. Anyway, SO sorry about that. :( But hopefully, you can get it running again and things will be okay.

Chooks-- I need to get that little box of Ivermectin at TSC, I suppose. I've looked at Atwoods, and they do carry it, but it's in one of those 1/2 gallon and gallon jugs. Pricey!!!! I just used the Hartz fleat and tick drops (for dogs) on them last week to clear them up (put a drop on their neck and another drop on their rear). It actually worked great! I had dusted them first, though. I keep checking them every day-- no more mites.

Pikeman-- I use GoDaddy for my website. I've built websites from scratch in the days before dreamweaver, and other writing software and I now use the GoDaddy website builders-- which are really simple to use. Actually-- easier to use than a lot of other hosting companies software. I've written CSS (scripts) to change their forms since they are non editable on the backside. You can over ride their forms with your own if you know what you're doing. They won't help you with that, though. I had called in because I had gotten myself stuck and the help center was a little shocked that I had screwed with it and managed to change it-- he kept saying that it was legal to do, but that he didn't know how I did it. I eventually figured out my problem on my own. I'm a Graphic Designer, so it's kind of what I do... or did, anyway. (I stay at home now) I could probably help if you run into a problem, but it sounds like a lot of people here are already pretty familiar with working it. I've never had a problem with GoDaddy-- I've been using them for years now.

I saw Vet Rx at Atwoods in Park City, and I didn't buy any chicks!
Hey, I'm proud of you MsFrizzle!!! Did you end up buying the VetRX? That's a great thing to have on hand. Stuff just springs up so fast.

Yesterday we ended up going to Andover because my MIL's pacemaker stopped working right and they had to work her in to put in a new one. She's pretty miserable; said she could feel the whole thing and it wasn't like that with the first two. We got back and I barely got caught up on reading the posts here when my mom called to tell us there was a tornado in Hutch. So I shut off the computer and of couse nothing happened here. Sounds like everyone here got through OK last night.
I'm sorry about your MIL-- how is she feeling now? Can she still feel it in there? That doesn't sound right, does it??

I will post some pictures after we get the pup .

You are going about the incubation all wrong! Can't get a chick that quick! The oven will never work! Just kidding Hawkeye. I could not resist that after reading all you have been through trying to get chicks from your girls.

I think I'm on my way to having some chicks of my very own, though!! yay!

Thank you SO MUCH Checoukan for my eggs!

I took a couple of pictures yesterday of them after I got them-- all in excellent shape! I unpacked them on a soft towel in front of my incubator so I could arrange the trays and get them put in. Those took up one row and only two eggs on another-- they are SMALL eggs!! Much smaller than my silkies!

I got Black Rosecomb bantam eggs (for those of you who didn't remember)

---eta-- the eggs you see in my incubator-- I'm thinking those are not fertile either. They are my own silkie eggs. Looks like I'm going to be just down to what Rosie gave me. :)

Awwww!! How sweet! I love the look of tiny eggs :) I really truly hope that they all hatch into beautiful babies! I was reading up on the Black Rosecombs last night and it seems like they must be hard ones to raise. Every place I looked said that they are not for beginners - but wow - they are beautiful!!

So, remember the story I saw in our newspaper about the Meat Birds as Art project. It seems that there was such an outcry that she's changed directions. You can read the store here: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2012/mar/02/poultry-not-picture-now/

cherwill- I don't see why they wouldn't all be pullets so long as the bin wasn't mis-marked. 100% of the ones we got that look identical are in the "Fryers" bin. They sent the girls there and the boys here. While they give those % wrong things, it just covers occasional goofs like anything else. I've yet to have a presexed bird not turn out as whatever it's supposed to be. I don't think they get it wrong that often. Most goofs I expect come from them being put in the wrong bins at the store. You should see the odd looks we get when DS and I discuss birds at the store. Don't know why they send employees over whenever they see us looking. Should know better. "Can I help you?" usually brings out a question from DS "Do you know if this chick genetically something or other???" Then it's deer in the headlights time from the employee and anyone else within earshot.

Wichitakid- My completely unscientific/quick sexing method is the "screams like a little girl" test. The ones that start shrieking and carrying on like they're dying when all you do is pick them up. The drama queens. Those always turn out to be my boys.

All the website building talk, well I still haven't figured out putting pics in my post since the switchover so.......

Just made me spit coffee all over my keyboard! LOL

Also, It's actually easier to add pics now. There is a button in the top bar that looks like a little picture. Just click that and then browse on your computer for the photo! You can also click the photo with your right mouse button once it's in the edit box where you can resize it directly here on the site.
