Danz I think we cross posted. So sorry to hear about your folks. I'm sure it is hard to watch them go through this. I will be thinking of you and praying for all of you.

Hawkeye, I can't believe those Rosecombs are on day 8 already - it seems like you just set them. Incubating always seems to take forever when I am doing it and go really fast when its someone else LOL. I may be getting some eggs today so tonight or tomorrow I'll be setting those. I haven't incubated in a year so I'm really excited.
that's great that they are doing well. I thought it was funny you had to pluck off a pasty butt. It's so much easier to pluck than wasting time trying to wash it off.Things are going great, thanks for asking! The chicks are completely settled into a routine and have learned how to scratch.
Duckies are doing good as well. We've been taking them out and holding them on our laps once an evening for 1/2 an hour so they can get used to it.
Sorry about losing your post-- I hate that! I do it now and then, too. That is sooo nice of you to give him a few chickens to start off with. I just can't imagine anyone being so cruel to go kill a bunch of chickens just to be spiteful and hurt someone else. WOW. You're right, that is one sick person. His son is going to be so excited! My boys LOVE their chickens. I have to yell at my oldest to get out of the pen at some point, because he could spend all day in there. He's running around holding a bird when he's at home. So sorry about your mom, it sounds very serious. You have a very good attitude about it and you have been very blessed to have them.Darn it. I just lost a huge post. Grrrr! The control Z doesn't work here.
am also taking a couple pairs of chickens when we go. An acquaintance went through a nasty divorce. Knwoing it would hurt him, his ex wife killed all of his chickens. How sick can people be?
It's been a few months but he is finally to the place where he can get chickens again. He is a single parent from a previous marriage so he has his hands full. I just thought the right thing to do would be to donate him a couple of breeding pair. He is going to surprise his son when he gets home from school.
I don't think I've explained my Mom's illness. She has a rare incurable lung disease called bronchiectasis. It is very similar to cystic fibrosis.
YAY on your good eggs!! That is so exciting that they are growing!! How long have they been in now?? I'm soooooo tempted to candle my rosecombs and see if they are developing or not. Glad you are feeling better! Don't over do it, or you'll be done in and worn out before the day is started.I just candled my 18 partridge wyandotte bantam eggs. AT LEAST a dozen of them are showing developement. Yippee! It is still early, but I'm hoping for a good hatch on them.
I went to take a BCmarans out of the incubator this morning. It had one eye that wouldn't open. The eye didn't look quite normal, and I couldn't pull it open when gently pulled at it. I thought, "Great. Now what?" Anyway, I gave the chick a drink and as soon as I tipped him up to let him swallow he popped his eye open. Shees. I don't know how he had it closed so tight before. I've never had that happen. I guess the laugh was on me.
I feel a lot better today. No fever, no body aches, (I'll spare you the other details!) lots more energy, but I still feel a little weak. I've done more today already than I did in the last 2 days! The wind has died down some, so after Mike's cardiac rehab appointment I think I will clean out the chicken tractor house and the barn. Then if I have any energy or time left I'll do the coop, too.
Hope everyone has a great day.
Hi everyone! It's been several months since I have been on here. I have a 5 year old and a toddler and it was getting too hard to keep up. Anyway Im back now. We still have all our birds including the ones we hatched. We also just got 12 new babies last night. I have about a half a dozen goose eggs in the incubator now because ours started a nest then left it. I'm not sure if I got them in time b4 they got too cold though. I'm sure they are fertile though because one was broke and u could see a small bloody thing in it.
Danz- I am sorry your dad isn't coping well with your mom's deteriorated state. I hope he will be able to cope and take care of himself too not just your mom. I hope you have some help shouldering the burden. I will continue to keep your family in my thoughts. I, too, come from an extremely close family so I know how hard and stressful it is when someone has something serious going on. My aunt has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and she seems to be getting worse here in the last month. The meds they have her on don't seem to be working much. My mom and I are the ones doing most of the caring and supervising since my grandparents aren't back from Texas yet. They wanted to come home to help but we convinced them to stay. Who knows how much longer they can go down there and enjoy themselves so we wanted them to stay. This illness has really stressed out the whole family.
This afternoon is Donovan's Orthopedic appt. I am praying for good news but am not holding my breath because I don't want to be disappointed. It seems like it is going to be a beautiful day. I hope everyone can get out and get done the things they need to do.
Beautiful chicks!! I'm no expert, but my two week olds had feathers in like that. I could go back and find pictures, but they were pretty good at jumping up on to the water, etc. Personally, I would not clip their wings. Time to get a top for your brooder. You can use a piece of screen.Hello all ! Quick question - when do chicks normally learn to fly? As I mentioned previously i just started with 6 chicks. 4 were 2day olds but the 2 Sussex are at least a week or two older. The thing is, my brooder's in my office because its naturally the warmest room in the house and as I'm working last nite, the larger of the two managed to fly up and land on the edge of the brooder which is 13" high. I'm sure he got a running start and whatnot but I was VERY surprised. I know i sound like a city slicker making the assumption that chickens can't fly. I know they can, but i didn't expect it until they were over a month old. I tried to find pictures online of Sussex at various ages but I was hoping someone here would know if they are more likely 10 days or 17 days old to have enough feathering to accomplish this. Also, when I was a young man, friend of mine kept parrots and macaws and he had to clip their wings to keep them from flying around and up into the ceiling fan. I thought it was cruel be apparently it's widespread practice with cagebirds. People don't do that to chickens do they ?? THanks and have a great weekend !!
