Consolidated Kansas

Thank you for all the warm welcomes! I will try to post pics later today of the Rocks. I guess they aren't super commonly kept, I have not been able to dig much up online about them. They are beginning to get their feathers in and look cutely awkward. We can not really tell them all apart except for a couple with extra loving personalities so my husband has taken to calling them all Raggedy Anne.

The coop is in progress right now, perhaps we will have it done by the end of the weekend.
I am currently a stay-at-home mom so maybe I have too much time to spend oohing and awing over them, I don't think I have watched TV since we got them, they're more way more entertaining...
I'm a SAHM, too. This will definitely keep you busy, but will be SO GOOD for you and the kids!! Pictures?!?!? :)

Thank you so much for posting that tutorial! I will definitely keep this in the back of my mind for if/when I need to know how to do this.

Mandilynn - glad you found us!

Have a great trip!

So glad you got to meet her too - isn't she a sweetheart though? I forgot to mention in my post that she also brought me two silkies. I've seen tons of photos but they are the first I've seen in person and I am SO glad to have them. My pair are practically identical to yours and are doing great this morning!

What kind of eggs did you get? And aren't you getting the Aloha eggs today too? You are going to have an incubator full for sure. We're a little early for the Easter hatch-a-long so I guess Karen, you and I will have to have our own little hatch-a-long for the eggs we set this week. I did consider joining the Easter hatch-a-long and I do still have the other incubator. Hmmmm....its to think about. DH kind of rolled his eyes when I showed him Renee's eggs in the 'bator, saying "That's a LOT of eggs", so I'm not sure what he'd say if I set up another LOL.

YOu got Renee's silkies, too!?!?! I wanna see, I wanna see!!!!!!! PIctures!!!!! I am a BAD silkie-aholic addict and I MUST have pictures!!!!!! What color are they??????

I will try to get a picture today, I got a splash girl and a dark blue or black rooster. They are so adorable! That brings my pure silkie total up to 5.

Eggs....ummmm yes.

She told me last night all what I got, but for the life of me, all I can remember this morning is Silkied Ameraucanas.
wee.gif
I am going to set them tonight when I get the Alohas!

I figured it was better to wait a day than to have that kind of close hatching. Plus today I have some that I am putting into the hatcher. I have some people coming for chicks today too. I need to drink about a gallon of coffee so I can focus on something, but I seem to be bouncing from one thing to another today.

Ok, I went and looked at the eggs. It looks like cochin, frizzles and a lonely silkie egg. Just what I wanted!!!!

That sounds like so much fun!! Silkied ameraucanas!! neat! Oh and blue and splash should give you really fun birds!! I must see these frizzles when they hatch! I'm going to get outside and work, BUT my DH loaned my drill to the neighbor so he can hang something in his house. Grrrrrr..... I hope he brings back my drill ASAP, or I'll go over for a bit of a "visit"....

I LOVE how some many folks are getting new chicks and eggs. Congrats to everyone and happy hatching.

Trish-Have a nice trip. Beautiful weather for it.

Hawkeye-That is EXACTLY why you need your own tools! I never loan "mine" out.

I have another serama hatched and two pipping and some other eggs pipping as well.

I've been cleaning out my new incubator. Folks, if you have a GQF or similar cabinet incubator that you also use for a hatcher, or a separate hatcher, I HIGHLY recommend pulling that back panel off an cleaning around the motor and the wiring at the end of your hatching season or before starting a new season. Since I've bought used incubators I've had to do this with all of mine. I can't believe how much dirt accumulates back there. It gets THICK and can't be good for the motor. It probably isn't such an issue in an incubator you don't hatch in it. I'm still in the process of soaking the bottom of my new one and cleaning the trays. Sure wish our power washer was working. That would clean those trays in a hurry.

Mandilynn-Cute partridge rocks. I have partridge wyandotte bantams in the incubator right now. Oh, BTW I haven't said an official Hello.

You will love it here. Lots of friendly folks and don't be afraid to ask questions. Even seasoned chicken veterans ask questions here. It's a great forum.

Hey guys. When can i start with the WheatGrass? And do you just put some morsels of it around the brooder, or one of those (sod trays) and let em romp through it. Thanks all!

Here is one of my Partridge Rock Bantams, they weren't feeling the picture session exactly today.

Not a great face pic, but their tails are my favorite part!
CUTE birds!!! Can't wait to see what they look like when they are adult! Thanks for sharing! :)

Sounds like you're working hard on that incubator. I got my drill back right away as it turned out. Thank goodness. I don't loan anything-- but my husband will loan to our next door neighbors. BUt they are usually pretty good about getting it right back to us. BUt still... when I'm in the middle of a project, it makes me nervous to have a tool gone even when I'm not using it right that minute. I got the coop nearly done, the roof is on, and the vinyl flooring is in. I need to shingle it and then I guess that'll be it.

You can give them greens around 2 weeks-- but make sure it's not very long, they have no way of cutting it up since they won't be ripping off the lawn themselves. They can get stuck choking down a pretty big blade of grass, etc if you don't cut it for them.

I just got back home. I am having a pretty rough time right now. My Mom has pneumonia. She is just not doing good at all. I just sat and bawled when she finally fell asleep.
I got the last puppy to it's forever home this morning and got all the pheasants PT tested. Now I only have a few hundred more birds to get done! I have appointments to test three more flocks in the next couple of months. At least if I'm doing someone else they can do the catching and stuff. That is hard for me to do . Darn my lousy back any way!
The chicken with the broken leg is doing quite well. She can stand for a moment and hobble a tiny bit before she sits down. I noticed that the foot on the leg that was hurting her is turned toward the inside so when she tried to walk she steps on her own foot. I didn't feel a broken bone in either the top or the bottom of her leg but her joint was hurting when I touched it. I am thinking she injured it right at her knee or whatever you would call that area on a chicken. Sure wish I had an x-ray so I could see what needs to be moved where. She's a very nice hen and I know once she is able to go back outside the roosters will beat her down to nothing. I'm not sure how to protect her. I guess I'll see if she is still able to lay later on when she gets better.
DH said well people at work who have injured chickens just eat them. I just can't myself doing that. Eating a bird just because she got hurt.

I just can't imagine what all you are feeling, I know it has to be absolutely heartbreaking to see your mom so sick. You are never far from my thoughts and prayers. Don't think I could eat a bird I was nursing back to health, either. It would be one thing if I had my mind set on eating a mean roo or whatever... but a bird you had every intention on keeping and then are nursing back... nope, couldn't do it. It would be nice to have an xray machine on hand... hehe. I used to work as a vet tech and that was part of my job-- developing xrays. Sure was a lot of fun. I think I missed my calling on being a vet.
