So, I just picked up 4 baby girls from At woods, 3 were banded

. When they were removing the band from on of my chicks, it seemed the skin had started to grow around it. Now we are home and she will not stop chirping. I am afraid she is hurt, is there anything I can do?

Thank you
Rachel

Sapphireblu Sarge is going to be a good dog. When the chickens are large enough and you have time to monitor him you should put him in with the chickens. If he starts to play rough tell him a firm No. The pup I kept is doing really well. She is able to come and go as she pleases and is hanging around the chickens. They have started going in her dog house and napping with her. A couple have even laid eggs in there.

We are almost done putting up 4' all purpose plastic mesh around the top of the 4' dog pen to keep the chickens from getting out for now. It used to be our chicken pen, until the hawks decided it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Now with Sarge, we can use it again. As soon as it is done, I can sit out there with them and monitor him with the 1 and 2 yr old birds. I think he'll do great. Then, once our perimeter fence is up, I'll have a coop with attached pen and space for everyone to free-range!

Sarge does very well responding to "no" and "off". He's just the typical pup that only remembers until he does it the next time, lol. I know he'll grow out of it, though. He's just a baby and still learning.

That is so cool that they hang out together, lol!

These are my girls!!!

This is my biggest girl, her name will be Lillith I think

This is my second largest, she is unnamed until further notice.

This is Casey investigating Lillith, They seem to get along right now, only the future will tell...

This is my girl with wing problems, she isn't dead I swear, I just didn't know how else to show her belly color. She is VERY noisy right now.

This is my Bantam. She has feet feathers, any idea what color she might end up?

I am so very excited. They are doing quite well.

My thought would be to put some neosporin on it and wrap it with vet tape if you can. She should be fine though as long as other chicks don't start pecking on it!

We are using the exact same dog kennel for our four. I had them in a smaller rodent cage, but moved the ducks tonight to a bigger setup (i'll post pics in a minute) and wil be moving the chicks over to the kennel tomorrow. You'll want to put some cardboard around the inside of it cuz they will scratch and get the shavings EVERYWHERE!

I might also suggest putting the waterer up on a brick or something, otherwise you'll be cleaning it out every couple hours as well! I have both metal and plastic, but wound up using the plastic cuz if I ever need to add AVC to the water - it can't be added to metal.

Other than that - cute chicks!!!! They grow up too fast!

Ok, so silly question, gravity is not my friend...

I got one of the water things with a bottle turned upside down and a bowl on the bottom, how do I keep the water from just pouring out?

Trish, congratulations on your new car; how exciting. Soooo .... did you manage to come back from Orscheln's without any new birds?

Rvroman, your chicks are so cute. Have fun with them because they grow up overnight it seems. They do chirp a lot sometimes, so I wouldn't be too concerned about that. Chickens are noisy. That's the same kennel we used when we brought our Weim home. We didn't know if she could be trusted in the house and we didn't know she suffered from separation anxiety. She tore it up several times, finally breaking most of the welds and damaging her canines in the process. At least you won't have that problem with your chicks!

We were going to rototill our community garden plot yesterday, but realized if we waited until Saturday, we could get some compost from the landfill. DH ended up going to KC with his dad to buy a bagger attachment for our mower from a guy he found on Craig's list. Tomorrow we'll be tilling compost (including the shavings from when we cleaned out the coop) in the garden. Hopefully we can get that done in the morning. DH needs to run to Galva to get the clutch he ordered for our motorcycle. Hopefully we'll have time in the afternoon to get at least one trellis set up and plant peas.

No eggs yesterday; five eggs today.

It's the first time in a loooooooong time we've had five eggs in one day.

Some sort of suction keeps it from just pouring out. When you turn it upside down, the bottom will fill. If it overflows, you'll need to check that you have the bottle on straight and screwed down all the way. As the birds drink, water keeps coming out just enough to keep the bottom filled.

Edited to add that I put the waterer in a plastic saucer that was originally designed to go under a plant pot. If I don't have it in something or on something, the chicks fill the bottom with shavings, which then wick the entire bottle's worth of water out. Learned that the hard way!

Are you sure its a waterer and not a feeder? The feeder is the one with the holes for their heads to go through and peck the food. The waterer has no holes but instead is a continuous circle around the central bottle. If you try to put water in a feeder, it will continue to pour out until the water is gone because too much air gets in. The waterer has a small hole to allow the water out and will form a vacuum once the bowl has filled up, not allowing any more water out until some is gone from the bowl. Sorry - its late - I know I'm not explaining this well.

Here is the new set-up for Ducky, Quackers, Daffy & Goose. Daffy and Goose have their own little corner and they can actually get through the bars in that area, so they'll come up and play with the big ones until they start picking on them, then they run back to their corner. I think this is a great way for them to get used to each other - allowing the little ones a safe escape when it becomes too much. Last night Quackers started picking on Daffy (it always seems to be those two) and Daffy stood up to him/her. After a few minutes, they cuddled and went to sleep. That's how I knew ya'll were right and that they would work it out pretty quickly.

Here are my chicky girls. They will be two weeks old on Sunday! Tonight is their last night in this cage - it's starting to get too small IMO. They will move into the dog kennel that the ducks were in.

Here is a video I took last night after giving them mealworms for the first time. It was hilarious to watch one (Onxy usually) grab it and run! They all chased after her. I can almost already tell the pecking order of the chicks. Onyx (BR) is the most social, the first to go to food and roost. Pearl is next in line and goes right after Onyx. Ruby is next and poor Opal is last. She is so submissive to the other chicks that I have to take her out and let her get a treat on her own or the others will steal stuff right from her mouth.
