Consolidated Kansas

Cherwill, well I haven't gone to Orschelyn's yet, so time will tell when I do. I just know the last time I went down there I had to tear myself away from the pens. It didn't help that the manager was egging me on either. I'm trying so hard not to get any chicks right now because I have 15 coming the end of April & I really don't need more than that.

Darn, today we got a $500 gift thing from the car dealership for their promotion & it was going to be a Visa card that could have been used anywhere. I wanted to use it for my breeder coop, but no my DH didn't see that happening, so he applied it to the downpayment on the new car. I told him later that I really could have used that & he made the comment, "Oh haven't you been saving your money for your coop?" I told him that no I've been paying for my rabbit equipment & rabbits. He just kind of shrugged. Grrrrr. So I guess I have my answer as to whether he's going to help me with materials for it. So that means that I have to start scrounging for materials anywhere I can. I do have windows now & cinder blocks, but that is it so far.

No time to post after morning yesterday. I'll be gone to Gardner all day. Wish me luck that my stuff sells good. There didn't seem to be too much there yesterday unless a lot more comes in later. I was surprised because I always heard the spring sale was the big one. Of course I am sure some people couldn't make it until they got off work.
Wish me luck with my sales.
I did have tragedy hit. I put one pheasant hen in a cage and she jumped up several times and broke her neck. She is now in my freezer. Dumb bird! So that is a few hundred eggs I won't be hatching this year. I had to substitute another one for her. It is a pair I sold to a guy in Oklahoma. Sure hope the other two do ok, as well as the ones that are already at the sale.

Trish, exciting that you're getting a new car! My first car was back when we got married, and then my second new car, we ordered it and got all the extra's and had to wait 3 weeks for them to build it-- longest 3 weeks of my life! LOL I'm driving it now-- the Dodge Caravan-- love it, heated seats, leather, all the fun stuff in there. I'd have put the $500 on the car, too, honestly. Turkey's hu? There was a lady on our swap that had Royal Palm hens that she was trying to sell for $100 a piece! I'd like to have a Tom for my girl, but my DH has said no more turkeys... and I have to agree because we're still up in the air on the whole job thing. Speaking of which-- we found out yesterday he won't be laid off this year. They are giving him incentives to stay until close of business next year. They think their last month here will be Sept or Oct. He has to sign a contract to get the incentives which means he can NOT get another job in the mean time. And trust me-- these incentives are crazy wild good! I was quiet honestly stunned they offered him that. They only offered a handful of engineers that didn't get transfers this deal. The rest got their notices yesterday. But that doesn't mean they will be gone in 30 days-- it's just giving them a heads up on which month they will be laid off. I think the majority will be gone by July. After my DH stays till the end, they said they will be offering a job to St Louis. Sooooo.... more decisions. DH wants me to get a realtor and check into the market again because their rep that talked to him yesterday showed him a couple of examples to show him how affordable it is. We're going to look around here and OKC first, though.

rvroman (probably got your name wrong-- going on memory here) Congrats on the chicks. Yep, you got two feeders, but you'll probably wind up needing them anyway if someone gets sick and you have to separate them out later on, so just hang on to it. The chick feeders come in handy when one gets hurt and you don't want to block your "hospital box" with huge feeders. Why did they take the bands off the wings? Were these the wing bands...I'm assuming?? Those bands are punctured thru the wing flesh on purpose-- they aren't meant to come off-- ever. When their feathers grow in, it hides the bands. I'm confused why they were prying them off! Maybe they were a different kind...? And I don't think she is chirping because she is hurt-- mostly because she's just going to be a talker. I would put the neosporin on it like someone suggested, but I wouldn't wrap it.

sorry about your pheasant hen! Stupid bird, indeed! Sheesh!! Sorry about that, and now you are down a hen. I hope everything else sells well. How is your sister's grand daughter doing? I couldn't stop thinking about her.

OH!! Our first show is this coming Saturday!! So I'll have to give both the birds that are going a bath the day before, I guess. My oldest needs to help me so that he can say he did the majority of the bathing and I'll be there to help and make sure he doesn't drown our birds! LOL

Checoukan-- you do a lot of showing-- what do you use on their combs? I was thinking either A&D or vaseline? They have feathers all down their legs-- but two of their toes are showing on the "extra toes" side... what would you rub on those?? More of the same? Would you put that on their beaks, too?? I need to pull out an old dog brush, someone on the silkie thread said to give them a good brush down before they are shown to flush their cushion and crest up.

Congrats to your DH Hawkeye - it sounds like he was one of the few to get a better offer which speaks volumes about his character and performance. And now you at least have a better idea of time frame too.

Danz - sorry about your pheasant hen - it seems like a better sense of self-preservation would go a long way with some of these birds.

Trish - congrats on the car. I've never bought a new car. The one I'm driving now is the newest I've ever had. It was a 4-year-old model when I bought it and had only 13K miles on it so I was pretty happy with that. Because of its age, I got it for a good price and was able to pay cash for it, so I was actually quite thrilled with it. My previous car had been totaled in a rear-end accident and the other driver's insurance company gave me a good payout on it but also said since they were paying for it, they'd take it for scrap so I had no vehicle and had to get something. I found exactly what I was looking for, at a good price, and used the insurance payout to pay some of it, so the balance needed wasn't that bad, and it saved me having a car payment. Honestly, I would have put the $500 toward the new car too - anything to keep that payment lower or shorten the length of time you're paying it off.

Tweety - your set up looks awesome - what are those panels you are using for the ducks?

RVRoman - congrats on the chicks and good luck going back to Atwoods and coming out with just a waterer LOL. I always ask them to remove the wing bands too - I really wish Ideal wouldn't put those in. It seems kind of a barbaric thing to do to a new-hatched chick when a legband would work just as well and not cause any pain or discomfort.

So are we ever going to get any rain, I wonder? Its been threatening for days and potential for storms has been in the forecast the past few days but so far not a drop of rain. I've got my silkies outside all day today instead of for just the afternoon, so I keep watching the weather to run and grab them if it starts to storm, but it seems like the weather can't decide what its going to do. Sunny one minute, dark the next.

Danz, I'm sorry to hear about your pheasant. I hope your stuff sells well for you also.

Hawkeye, I'm glad you got some good news of sorts for once, at least now you have something to work from. My DH has a nephew & family that live around the St. Louis area & my brother also lives up there in a suburb. He's 18 years older than me though & lives in a condo setting where he doesn't have to do any maintenance.

Well I set my eggs in the incubator last night, so everyone wish me luck. Hawkeye already knows, but I was a little worried at first about the humidity, but I have got it about 45% according to the reading on my therm/hygrometer. I just bought the one Danz that you mentioned they had at Wal Mart, so we'll see how it goes. It's really kind of big for the Brinsea, so at a later time I may look for a smaller one if I have more eggs to set. I only had 14 to go in this time, about half are Ameraucana & the other half are EE eggs just to fill some space. I also have another incubator that I think I may use for my hatcher just to keep the Brinsea cleaner.

Well DH just got back from his run, so I've got to get him outside to help me get my rabbit hutch back together. I need to start getting some of my rabbits moved out. It's getting hot in the garage already & it's only March, not a good sign.

The are cube squares that I used to make C&C cages for our guinea pigs and rabbits before. http://www.guineapigcages.com/ They are pretty handy in creating all sorts of critter cages. Got them at Target.

I"m sorry about your pheasant Danz :( That's crazy that it would intentionally hurt itself!

Congrats on the new car! I got a new car just about a year ago (PT Cruiser) after running my Geo Tracker into the ground. I'd had her for 16 years and it was hard to get rid of it, but it started costing more than it was worth. I would have used the 500 for the down payment as well, thats one or two ca rpayments that are under your belt now!

Well I set my eggs in the incubator last night, so everyone wish me luck.

Good luck Trish!! I hope this time goes smoothly!

Sorry, I've either already committed to or someone else has volunteered me for way to much lately. I mostly skimmed.

(((HUGS))) and prayers for all who need it.

for everyone new.

Love all the cute pics, except for what I think were non-developing a few posts back. Hugs for you.

Couldn't resolve to spending the money on the Ecoglow when I first heard of them, so we compromised. We use those wire cube panels, zip tied with a reflector lamp and lower watt bulbs. Fine wire mesh along the inset wire panel. Really low for new chickies, flip over and then lamp is higher for older. 3 sided cube with a shelf, if that makes sense.

Back at the office here?

CheCouKan - Bantams or LF? I don't think 18days is all that surprising, especially on bantams. At least that's how it seems here.

for the rest of the hatch.

Anyone from Kansas either in the Silkie club or thinking of joining with thoughts on showing this year, please pm me. Need to get our state meet set.

Hi Avery-Long time no see... Sounds like you are pretty involved with the silkies. Hope you have a good state meet. I think there are several people here that might be interested in that.

I'm getting pretty well sold down on my chicks with exception of some of the ones I am going to keep and a few I am saving for my sis. I have a few lakenvelders left and only 3 eggs left in the incubator that are due to go into lockdown tomorrow. There's still the bantam partridge wyandottes in there, but I don't plan to sell those.

I intend to take a few days off before my surgery. Hopefully I can get an auto water system set up for my breeder pens which will make it a lot easier for taking care of them while I'm down. I'm REALLY sick of the buckets in there that are dirty the next day.
